ABC issues new ‘diversity’ rules for TV content

The ABC has revealed new “diversity” rules requiring its TV shows to focus on and star Indigenous, “gender diverse” and other “under-represented” Aussies.

A World War I drama about Gallipoli produced for the ABC would be required to focus on “diversity” among Diggers, including a 50 per cent female cast and Indigenous lead actors, under new guidelines announced by the national broadcaster today.

TV production companies wishing to work with the ABC must now meet minimum “diversity” requirements both in front and behind the camera, with a focus on “under-represented people and perspectives”.

The ABC’s new “Diversity and Inclusion Commissioning Guidelines”, which come into effect from today, cover screen content across genres including drama, comedy, children’s, factual and entertainment programs.

The guidelines generally require that TV content must be “about under-represented communities, backgrounds and experience”, or include at least one main cast member who is Indigenous, from a “diverse” background, disabled or identifies as LGBTQI+.

Additionally, at least half of the main cast and crew must be female or identify as “gender diverse” – the ABC had previously set a goal of 50-50 female representation among on-air news talent by the end of last year.

For non-scripted shows such as documentaries, the new guidelines say the content must “explicitly and predominantly (explore) issues of identity relating to under-represented groups, including Indigenous matters, gender (or) cultural diversity”, or have a “specific focus on LGBTQI+ communities, people with disability or other under-represented groups”.

Crucially, under the principle “nothing about us without us”, all productions about a specific “diverse” community or subject must include at least one person who is “representative of that diversity within the core creative team”.

Speaking to Nine Newspapers, the ABC’s head of drama, comedy and Indigenous programming, Sally Riley, said specific diversity requirements might differ depending on the nature of the program – but that a drama set on the front lines of Gallipoli, for example, would not automatically be exempt from casting women or Indigenous actors in lead roles.

“We know there were Aboriginal soldiers fighting in that war,” Ms Riley said.

According to the Australian War Memorial, 70 Indigenous men are believed to have served at Gallipoli, 13 of whom were killed in action. Between 250 and 300 died in action during World War I.

“And it wasn’t just about the men (on the battlefield) – it’s about the women and children who were left at home and kept the country running,” Ms Riley added. “We might ask, ‘How can we build in a storyline about a partner or mother of one of the soldiers?’”

70 Aboriginals out of hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers. And I'm sure there was a crossdressing woman or two like in every major battle in history. Interesting factoid, but there's so many other stories you could tell besides inserting tokens.

The way these people reduce history to nothing but "here is X minority in famous place/era" is infuriating. It's how they teach it in schools and why our education suffers, since learning about some black dude in the American Revolution (for instance) is more important than learning about why there was an American Revolution. It gives no context and allows people to overlook plenty of fascinating and equally important stories of the past.

When you apply rules like this to historical drama, you either aren't making a historical drama anymore (like that one Battlefield game and how there are black women Nazis) or the art is going to end up butchered and plenty of fascinating stories won't be told. We can't focus on all sorts of great heroism because we're too busy focusing on some token minority.
Mainstream Western TV is dead. I for one welcome our Asian, Eastern European, and Latin American shows to streaming services.
I mean it's the same reason anime and manga are demolishing western animation and especially comic books. When you have cat ladies and their simps writing for other cat ladies and simps, fucking nobody wants to watch or buy, not even the simps and cat ladies since they don't actually watch or buy things. Yet they keep pushing the propaganda anyway.

What's insane is that it is dictating how stories, real and fictional can be told.

If you want to tell more stories of underrepresented groups, fine but there are stories without them. To exclude that is denying reality.

Just apply this to other stuff. A show like Wentworth wouldn't be made under these rules. How could you make a documentary on the Beatles if you have to spend half the time focusing on women?

You literally can't tell certain stories if you're forced to balance it out by identity. Here's a bio-pic on the life of Cathy Freeman, let's make sure to focused 50% on a gay man to balance it out.

Let's make a drama about the first summit of Everest! Make sure to spend 50% cutting away to their wives back home going, "I do hope they're alright, we're doing the real suffering. Pass me another biscuit."

Sorry Todd Sampsom, unless you find a female to do your stupid shit with you. No more seasons of Bodyhack.

We already know how history is being distorted for political reasons, this is mandating it.

People were absolutely furious about the lack of women or PoC's in Dunkirk, even back then. Like people said, imagine trying film something about Gallipoli without women or abbos. The fact white men died in droves to stop the evil Nazi patriarchy will forever jam in their craws.

>Gallipoli
>Nazis

I was specifically referring to the Dunkirk bit there. I phrased my post badly. This whole historical erasure is in my opinion in large part because it wasn't PoC's who died in droves to defeat fascism but FUCKING WHITE MALES. They absolutely have to erase all those white men dying for heroic causes because right now they're forced to give them credit, and you know how the left feels about crediting white men with anything.

If variety is the spice of life, diversity (in the modern context) is the salt of death.

You cannot make art with or by quota.

The classics were doing something nobody else was doing and set the standard until the next one came along. Every project that tries to appeal to everyone winds up appealing to no one and being forgotten about. This shit will fail and I look forward to laughing at them.

"What's that? We're getting wind that some people are starting to think negatively of black people? I know, let's shove them down everyone's throats even MORE and make the entirety of media and culture revolve around them, even when dealing with real historic events where white men suffered and died, let's still make it all about blacks, that's sure to solve the issue of resentment and racism!"

-every media company ever.

The message that it sends is that white lives literally don't matter, the mass death of white men is just an irrelevant statistic, no, what's really important is whoever was black in these events, those are the real lives that matter.

In the case of Australia we've already had movies like Rabbit Proof Fence about the lives and history of Aboriginals, why rewrite history and shoehorn them in other stuff?

You're talking about the 2017 movie, right? Just stop and think about the fact that that may be the last decent piece of media made about WW2 ever.

Because modern media is hypocritical and incredibly racist. If they wanted to elevate cultural diversity, you'd get movies specifically about things like African/Aboriginal history and mythology being put front-and-centre, and all of the conflicts that revolved around it. There's a mountain of creative potential in that.

But all of that is too risky to them because it's not all machine guns and tanks and globe-trotting escapades, and it's much easier to just shove a PoC into something already established and call it a day, so they latch onto common threads of history that every man and his dog knows and decide to tinker with that in new and insulting ways (e.g.: Troy: Fall of a City).

I don't want to. The notion is so horrifying to contemplate I will gladly admit I am making like an ostrich and living in denial.
It’s all going to be Orwellian revisionist history from here on out and no longer truthful based depictions.

Future generations will think there were literally woman and black women fighting on the frontlines.

Fuck. There are a few new series on netflix that should be right up my alley that only have blacks as protagonists. I don't know if there are any known good black actors from the US anymore but the brits have a couple.

Altered Carbon season 2 was unwatchable due to an especially ugly, bad and annoying actor. Is it just a humiliation ritual at this point? Becase women won't watch that shit. Woke faggots won't watch it and I won't watch it. I guess the blacks won't watch it either since its about white subjects and not about bix nood n shieeet.

I've taken to watching Korean and older movies just to get away from endless niggers, fags and women everywhere way outsized to their actual numbers.

If blacks are 11% of the US i wonder how many percent have a job if we assume they have equal representation in all jobs (blatantly false) it should come to what, about 1 character out of every twenty or thirty. That would be bearable at least. If they could act. A big if.
