ABC issues new ‘diversity’ rules for TV content

The ABC has revealed new “diversity” rules requiring its TV shows to focus on and star Indigenous, “gender diverse” and other “under-represented” Aussies.

A World War I drama about Gallipoli produced for the ABC would be required to focus on “diversity” among Diggers, including a 50 per cent female cast and Indigenous lead actors, under new guidelines announced by the national broadcaster today.

TV production companies wishing to work with the ABC must now meet minimum “diversity” requirements both in front and behind the camera, with a focus on “under-represented people and perspectives”.

The ABC’s new “Diversity and Inclusion Commissioning Guidelines”, which come into effect from today, cover screen content across genres including drama, comedy, children’s, factual and entertainment programs.

The guidelines generally require that TV content must be “about under-represented communities, backgrounds and experience”, or include at least one main cast member who is Indigenous, from a “diverse” background, disabled or identifies as LGBTQI+.

Additionally, at least half of the main cast and crew must be female or identify as “gender diverse” – the ABC had previously set a goal of 50-50 female representation among on-air news talent by the end of last year.

For non-scripted shows such as documentaries, the new guidelines say the content must “explicitly and predominantly (explore) issues of identity relating to under-represented groups, including Indigenous matters, gender (or) cultural diversity”, or have a “specific focus on LGBTQI+ communities, people with disability or other under-represented groups”.

Crucially, under the principle “nothing about us without us”, all productions about a specific “diverse” community or subject must include at least one person who is “representative of that diversity within the core creative team”.

Speaking to Nine Newspapers, the ABC’s head of drama, comedy and Indigenous programming, Sally Riley, said specific diversity requirements might differ depending on the nature of the program – but that a drama set on the front lines of Gallipoli, for example, would not automatically be exempt from casting women or Indigenous actors in lead roles.

“We know there were Aboriginal soldiers fighting in that war,” Ms Riley said.

According to the Australian War Memorial, 70 Indigenous men are believed to have served at Gallipoli, 13 of whom were killed in action. Between 250 and 300 died in action during World War I.

“And it wasn’t just about the men (on the battlefield) – it’s about the women and children who were left at home and kept the country running,” Ms Riley added. “We might ask, ‘How can we build in a storyline about a partner or mother of one of the soldiers?’”

"You must be this #woke to have your TV show aired".

I'm sure ratings will dip and it will be blamed on racism.

You know, this shit is why so many black people think there's a lot more of them in the US than there really are. I've seen idiots think that blacks are 50% of America.

It's the same thing with the belief that all white people are rich and own 2 cars, they just drive the shitty one around black people.
If you consider wiggers and chiggers as defacto-niggers, then yeah, it's probably more than 50%.

All wh*toids are subhuman anyway.

Because modern media is hypocritical and incredibly racist. If they wanted to elevate cultural diversity, you'd get movies specifically about things like African/Aboriginal history and mythology being put front-and-centre, and all of the conflicts that revolved around it. There's a mountain of creative potential in that.
There sure is. And then like 5 Aboriginals complain it's cultural appropriation because some other tribe got the money and acting roles and suddenly their voices are joined by a million white idiots and a few other Aboriginals (all of whom have blond hair and blue eyes and live in cities). Doesn't matter how much input actual Aboriginals had on the movie, how many Aboriginal actors, how the movie is approved of and enjoyed by almost all Aboriginal elders and youth alike, nope, it's racist.

The movie probably bombs anyway because the writing is shit since the industry is so full of nepotism the actual talent is barely there. Social justice types are basically Satan in that they cannot create, only corrupt and destroy. It's no surprise they just take shit and rehash it with token minorities.
We wuz gassin n shieeeeeeet
All the great accomplishments in history from the Pyramids to Shakespeare to religion and philosophy were done by blacks. Is it really a surprise that such a great accomplishment as killing six million Khazar crackers alongside millions of other whites could only be done by a proud black man?

More Disney faggotry. At this point the down syndrome transgender lesbian ass eater quota is imminent.

Aren't Indigenous Australians a whopping 2% of the population? Have fun meeting that quota.

And a large section of them are now mixed-race and you can't even really tell. They just live normal lives. Focusing on their representation in the media by focusing on their race could have negative consequences.

"Here's a story representing you." Cut to a story before settlement and the people thinking, "that ain't my experience." Constantly focus on the horrors of colonialism and their treatment. Reinforces a sense they are others. Have a sitcom of uni kids, can't just be one of the kids. They have to be the other, the indigenous character.

This diversity is about propaganda to the people first and formost. So it won't be a case of watercooler talk of, "Yeah, did you know that actor is a Koori?" Where it can subtly work to break down prejudices people have. Where they seem them as a person first. Now they'll always be seen as the identity.

Hey now, don't forget significant Aboriginal history, mate. Why, the Great Raids of 1974 were nothing to sneeze at, and many Woolworths and service stations had their ethanol stocks completely disappear overnight...

70 Aboriginals out of hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers. And I'm sure there was a crossdressing woman or two like in every major battle in history. Interesting factoid, but there's so many other stories you could tell besides inserting tokens.
The other stat, 250-300 dead for the entire war is also great, because that means that for every abbo that died, 17500-21000 non-abbos bit the bullet. Though, for Gallipoli, I guess, it was one for every 3500-ish.

WWI was hellish, but it was equally hellish for everyone. Inflating the contribution of one group just to make them feel better about themselves decade after the last veteran of the war died is kind of appalling.

Oh this is Australia. The country that banned light novels because of their covers and wanted to ban small breasted porn stars. A completely sane and rational country.

Let's be honest: that ship sailed long ago for most places.

Mainstream Western TV is dead. I for one welcome our Asian, Eastern European, and Latin American shows to streaming services.
Buh...buh....buh.... I like to see the huwite wimmens on the telly.
It’s all going to be Orwellian revisionist history from here on out and no longer truthful based depictions.

Future generations will think there were literally woman and black women fighting on the frontlines.
Bolded the distinction you drew. I legit laughed.

What's weird is I remember reading years ago that nudity was becoming more common on all Australian beaches, then they turn around and do stuff like that.

What I meant to say is future generations will think both white women and black women fought in combat in WW2.

Just make up your diversity quota out of hot blonde big tiddie lezzies that get converted to bi by main character's cock. For extra diversity points, make some of them legit retarded.

So there is this series called Australian Story, every week they tell stories about people from their perspective. Well they used to, I haven't watched the ABC, or pretty much any TV for years.

I wonder how something like this series will play out. There are only so many abos, 3% of 25mil, in Australia. I'm guessing all the stories are going to be about our 'new blacks', and how hard their lives are, with their pillaging, beating, and destroying white people's lives; and that is only the teenagers...

"Men die in war, women most affected."
