It's kind of amazing if you think about just how small Sessler's window of influence really is. Zoomers have no fucking idea who he is or what X-Play was. And the pocket of Millenials that DID care have moved on.

What doesn’t seem to be brought up a lot is just how tiny G4’s audience was. I imagine that a lot of people here either watched G4 or had friends that watched G4, but it was often identified as one of the least viewed channels by a couple of cable providers. Even during what people identify as “the glory days,” it wasn’t attracting close to the numbers of some mid tier YouTube dummy. I do think G4/TechTV we’re forward thinking it that there was an audience that wanted to see content built around games and gadgets, but that audience clearly didn’t want that programming as presented by a traditional television network structure.

This is in fact exactly my experience. I think I watched it once, ever...and that was watching Big Trouble in Little China which they aired for some reason. I mean, I knew people that watched it, and they insisted on talking about it as if I watched it, but I remember a friend of mine talking about Sessler at one point (must have been 2008 or so) and I was like "I have no idea who the fuck that is."

It was a small subset of an already not-enormous-at-the-time subculture that watched G4.

I don't think the format of a Let's Play could work on broadcast television, where it has to fit within a set time slot, has to have commercial breaks and depending on the game has to be edited for content, I definitely don't blame a TV executive for not really thinking that would work on TV.

But that is what G4 could have evolved into was a brand of online only content, web videos like Let's Plays with some actual money behind them, a little bit of forward thinking and it could have evolved with the times instead of being thrown away like garbage, it's a shame.
