In the US past, it went waaaaay beyond social disapproval and yes, many gays/trans people were straight up murdered and a lot of that was based on “social disapproval”. Hell, it happens even now. The only difference is that the government no longer turns a blind eye. At least not in the way it used to. In other countries that aren’t “Communist”, many gays most certainly are murdered and put into “hospitals”, so Maoism is still nothing special in regards to homosexuality/trans.

It probably is a regional thing. The resource room in my elementary school was designed for students performing either above or below average in one or more subjects in order to give them the right level of instruction/challenge they needed outside of the regular classroom.
