IIRC he claimed to have taken it out for electrolysis, you can't have metal in your face during electrolysis. Most likely LARPing though, we know Phil didn't get electrolysis, facial or otherwise. I would guess that he either got sick of the weight of the jewellery, or he simply wanted to make his electrolysis story more convincing.

Shame, I kinda liked the whole arc where the thing was gradually going up 1mm in size every month or so. I wanted to see how far he would take it before someone told him he looks like a dunce with a door knocker on his face.

Apologies to management, but that's a bad definition of a rat king. A rat king IRL is a group of rats that hang out together until they get their tails tangled and glued together with shit, so they have to go around everywhere en masse (possibly mythical, though there are supposed specimens in museums).
