Hello fellow K-farmers, I'm finally getting on the PCMR train and building a PC. I've never done something like this before so this is new ground for me. I was hoping to gather some insight here regarding this, so if you have any experience or advice on building a system that you are willing to share I would appreciate it.

EDIT
Neglected to mention I already had a build in mind, apologies.

One of the last few ways you could potentially get a PC that isn't compromised by the government right out of the box.

I wish you luck, and may build one for myself if it's not too complicated.

I've built half a dozen computers, but I don't know much beyond which lego bit goes where. Assuming you don't want to do days of research to get above this level, here is your new best friend. The first and most important question is, "how much do you want to spend?" http://www.logicalincrements.com/

box, motherboard, psu, cpu, ram, monitor, m+k, hard drive(s), and graphics card (i'm assuming you'll be gaming, which is why you mentioned PCMR). that's basically it. putting a PC together is pretty simple and there's plenty of guides online.

in my experience, a good box and psu is gonna be really important and worth spending a bit extra on. a good and OP PSU will last you through a few upgrades, and a good box will make all your guts last longer and keep cool.

other than that, what you want to buy is really up to you.

I strongly advice to google stuff like "how to build a pc" or someting similiar first. There are lot of things to be carefull about.
For example if you buy a mainboard, you can only use a certain type of cpu (the "socket" is important, google it).
Then you should be carefull about the ram and what exactly fits in the mainboard.
Look up what tools you need.
Buy a strong enought power unit if you put in a big graphics card.
Dont rely on on onboard graphic if you want to play modern games.

Look for a step for step instruction because for a newbie there is too much to be carefull about!

Some parts will feel like they aren't fitting together right or like you have to really jam them in. Basically, you'll worry that you're breaking shit. THIS IS NORMAL. Don't worry, just keep a hammer handy.

If that's your budget, I would recommend foregoing the SSD and getting a decent aftermarket cooler for the CPU.

Always use SSDs for the OS, never bother with overclocking, use this website for any and all games, make sure that no programs start on boot up, make sure to have your HDD get defragged on a weekly basis (you can set it up to do that) and then use BleachBit on it. Oh, and clean the damn thing on a consistent basis. Steam and GOG are your friends for games, along with any ROM sites and MyAbandonware.
