I feel there ought to be some kind of balance to be attained in that regard; there's a difference between letting your hair and beard grow out and outright leaving it unkempt. There is nothing more potent in other people's perception of you than a first impression.

Though with that said, I'm inclined to agree on the skin care point. Even an acne riddled bastard will see some improvement simply from showering daily and getting sunlight. I'm sure lotion and other products have their uses, but if it ain't broke don't fix it, etc.
