Age of Sigmar

I know lore-wise that the world of Warhammer Fantasy had some kind of apocalypse, but why did GW do away with it entirely? Was Fantasy not selling or something, so they made AoS as a hard reboot?
Fantasy had a harder entry barrier than 40k at the time. The rules were a bit more archaic, armies were not being updated equally, and it was more expensive to get a full army. GW saw that Fantasy was not selling as well and put less resources into it, resulting in less interest in the game.

There was also the fact that GW’s CEO at the time, Tom Kirby, wanted GW to focus on making models rather than designing a fun, balanced game. This is why AoS 1st edition was so shit. They didn’t have points values for about the first year.

Luckily for GW, they removed Kirby as the CEO and started focusing on making good games. It was also helpful that their divisions didn’t talk to each other as that led to them licensing Fantasy to Creative Assembly for Total War Warhammer. They now had a whole new group of fans that wanted to play Fantasy. Which is why we are getting The Old World this year or the next.

Thank God for the Total War games. Were it not for them, zoomers wouldn't know that SETTRA RULES

You know how recently people are saying GW will be dying next week over some shitty space wolf heresy helmets or whack primaris rocket launchers? Back around the 2010s they were unironically dying and even 40k was nearing a death spiral, Fantasy was already in it. Its been said to death in the old ass 40k thread on kiwi but the tldr is

>Newer GW designers at the time felt restricted, couldn't design anything new but almost everything was filled in each army. This resulted in a spiral of veterans having everything they needed, and newbies turned off at the old sculpts

>Fantasy was massive not only in money costs but also army size basic armies were becoming 100+ miniatures and no one wanted to paint that much especially newbies

>old GW arent like nu GW - new editions now mean you get rules/some model updates this is a very new concept. Back then some armies for all games could be stuck with older books and good luck with model updates

Thats quick and dirty or at least the general gist of things. Apparently, paints were outselling the entire fantasy line and blah blah. This discussion is poisoned and over done. I personally think with GW bringing back old world it should be a bit better. People who think they could have released Total Warhammer and all those newbies would flock in to save Fantasy are clueless yeah would you rather play a video game that actually replicates the table top game in real time really fucking good or buy $500 of tiny plastic, paint 100s of models, and then try to play the game with true gatekeeping grey beards none of the pussy footing bragging gatekeeping people exclaim to do now.

People already said the practical reason, but another one was that Fantasy was far more limited in lore. Half the characters being humans mean you can't pull too many timeskips explaining how there are still soldiers alive in the Empire before every named character is 70, and there were too many end of the world plotlines to resolve in a satisfying manner, which was exactly what happened and the butthurt was massive (and carried to this day). An especially infamous case was an autist burning his 1000's of dollars armies.

In 40K you can time skip 200 years and nobody dies due to either technology or the warp, which justifies new tech and manpower.

Any interesting war models or are the stormcast eternals the only army worth investing?

I haven't been paying any attention to Warhammer news so I'm happy to see that they're bringing back the Old World due to the success of the Total War game (which is my first and only Total War game).

For Age of Sigmar, the main starter kit and the "Start collecting!" boxes are what I bought first and now I have two small armies (Blades of Khorne and Stormcast Eternals) that I can use to teach other people how to play. There are several army lines that I like so not having to field a huge amount of units for each one has allowed me to feel less guilty about collecting multiple armies.

It's been awhile since I visited the GW website and I see they've added some cool new stuff, especially in the scenery department.

One of the nice things is that you can easily convert old Fantasy line models by changing the bases (though you don't really have to do that, either) since I have an old Dark Elf corsair set that I never got around to finishing. I have some really old Khorne demons, too, but they're made of metal so they don't quite fit the aesthetics of the newer models. I'll probably just repaint and display them.

Is it better to run chaos warriors with halberds or axes/swords or is it purely situational, I'm not to familiar with aos balance.

Don't have any math to back it up, but I would think swords are slightly better, if only because Warriors typically come in small 10-man units, so being able to attack from the second row might not be useful. If you plan on reinforcing the unit, though, I can see how halberds might be better.

Reactions: Just don't like em.
So basically Old World and AoS will be sharing models im pretty sure especially with the new bigger base sizes

The release of this thing still is in my view, one of the most hilarious trainwrecks related to games ever.

Finished the AoS Gotrek trilogy, it was better than it had any right to be. It's nice the enemies in those books are the more unique new races rather than orks/chaos. I think it's a good case of character progression from being a virtual mute, ans Maleneth was a great companion

I wish I wasn't spoiled on the ending of the third book though, especially as it's pretty likely Maleneth survived it considering her death isn't depicted and she still had some unresolved plot elements with what she did to her mistress. But if/until she reappears I wonder who'll be the new companion.

I think we should just have all GW ips under the Warhammer thread. No point in having an AOS thread when half of it will be old world shitposting and the such.

As for AOS I look forward to my seraphon box tomorrow.

Hey. Question: I would like to learn the lore of AOS but I'm not sure where to start. What book/book series should I go to first?

For context, I know nothing and have not been interested in anything GW has made, ever. Fantasy or 40K or anything, but my friends like it, they have been collecting ever since they were kids and my husband recently bought a whole BUNCH of AOS miniatures, including a whole army of Stormcast for me to play :)

I built them and am getting into painting them, but I feel like it's a shame to not know anything about them. Thanks

I love AOS models but nobody seems to play it. I don't even know how to play regular 40k but I would like to learn some day, so I am reluctant to buy a bunch of AOS stuff. They are so much fun to paint though, so many beautiful pieces. Great Unclean One are my favorite model out of the line to paint, the most fun I think. I like all of the knight-looking guys too, Chaos Chosen etc. I like their 40k versions as well. I played that class in Warhammer Online

Yeah! I do really like how they look for sure : ) I personally like high fantasy stuff more than sci-fi so I can understand what you're saying too.

Would you consider getting proxy models delivered?

My friend buys a bunch of plastic models made from making molds from the actual warhammer models, then re-casting them. Literally a cheap Chinese plastic version of the actual models, they look the same but a fraction of the price (the seller is called "Mr. Wang, I wonder if it is a troll haha)

Then there is also people who make similar looking 3d models of the AoS stuff, for 3d printing with resin or something.

What I am trying to say is, if you would like to get yourself some models for painting, there are non-GW ways to get them : ) I can see gathering them up to paint them up! Haha 🖤
