Alcohol debate thread. - Is Alcohol necessary?

I really dislike how present it is in our society.
You're lame or weird if you don't drink and a fair amount of people have no issue reminding you of that.

I also generally dislike the way it's used. Be it as an "inhibitor reliever" (we have them for a reason and drunk people are generally insufferable to be around honestly), or as a coping mechanism (it's better to learn to meditate instead of drinking), it's unhealthy.

I won't tell people what to do but I'm not favorable to it at all and will actively avoid being around it/around people under its influence whenever I can.

Zero. Alcohol is a poison and a depressant. There is no benefit to alcohol drinking.

If you need alcohol to be fun at parties, get better social skills.

If you need alcohol to cope with life, then find solutions and healthier ways to handle the sorrows and challenges of life. There are healthier and cheaper ways of escapism.

It saddens me to see that society has accepted that alcohol is a normal part of being social. Of course, banning it won't help, but self-control will.

Alcohol is a blessed and sacred part of Christianity. Abstinence is a core part of Islam. This thread needs Jesus™ wine.

This reads exactly like a million comments on reddit where said Redditor is trying to justify not drinking and being boring at parties.

My view on booze is that it’s fine in moderation. If you can’t do moderation, don’t do it at all.
listen, fuck all you lot, this is the party line consensus in this thread and it's bollocks.
at least once a year I drink until I literally can't walk and I've earned it, it's medically necessary

IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN PROPER TOSHED YOU HAVEN'T LIVED

That is moderation though, a couple of times a year getting drunk isn’t a massive issue unless you’re dangerous to yourself or others. Doing it weekly is.
It’s how it affects your life. Going out with your mates a few times a year and getting wasted and having a laugh isn’t the same as ending every day in a haze and being dependent.

As a person who is moderately intoxicated at this very moment.

I think alcohol is ok in moderation. However is it necessary? Absolutely not.

It’s kept me from ending my life a few times, so take that for what you will, but it almost killed me once. So take that also as you will.

I don’t think it’s bad, but I do think the only people who will “benefit” from it are either ex-alcoholics (like myself) who have learned to stop at a safe point, or those who the only option they have is to either do different drugs or kill themselves.

Alcohol for all its failings, will be replaced if it was abolished, and I fear for those who imbibe in whatever takes its place.

At the risk of power leveling to a degree, I will say that I’ve had my struggles with drugs and alcohol. I don’t drink at all anymore, because I can’t handle it. But I still think everyone should be allowed to choose for themselves. Alcohol has definite benefits. It makes social anxiety disappear, which can be invaluable.

Just like everything in life, it’s somewhere in the middle. Alcohol is definitely gay and cringe when overdone, but so is sobriety.

Why stop with alcohol? We should ban everything that is unnecessary and potentially dangerous. So no more booze, but also no more tobacco, weed, drugs, vapes, fast food, sweets, sodas, fast cars, and so on.

Just kidding of course. The anti booze people get upset when THEIR particular vice is threatened.

It's necessary to disinfect various wounds and surfaces.
It's a shitty drug though. You can do far better. If you choose drugs, choose something smarter.

It's a great drug. Delicious, vast variety, cheap, convenient, makes you feel good and sociable. Negative side effects like being blackout drunk or having a hangover only happen if you drink like an idiot.

What's something smarter? Let me guess, WEED? LOL

Depends on your needs.
If you need the energy and you're the active spergy type, some amphetamine should do.
If you're into numbness and half-wake states of dreaming stupor, opiates.
If you're into trips in imaginary worlds, hallucinogens like LSD and shrooms, but the offer is really large here.
If you're into being giddy, a bit more creative, relatively chill and like the munchies, yeah weed's awesome.
The downside to many of these is they are highly addictive and illegal. But they also do not rot your liver and kidneys and are generally gentle on your body, IF and ONLY IF you can score them cleanly, i.e. pharmaceutical stuff.
If you're stuck with xylazine+fentanyl mixed with dealer sperm sold as heroin, you might as well just 41% from the start.
Or drink alcohol. You really like the taste? I find it disgusting, from beer to wine to vodka and whiskey.

Im going to quote Christopher "The Nose" Moltisanti on this one: "It's like the fuckin' regularness of everyday life is too hard for me" For me booze helps keep that boredom away

My brother in Christ, I come from an alcoholically abusive familial environment where my dad came home and beat me, my sisters, my brothers, my mom and my grandparents with his serrated belt every night for a decade. He only found peace while drunk driving into another car, ending his life instantly. Alcohol is no joke.

Sucks that you were abused, but that's a him problem, not an alcohol one. Alcohol is just the particular excuse he used to behave the way he did. If it weren't alcohol, there would have been another excuse.

The VAST majority of people aren't abusive pieces of shit when drunk, proving its not alcohol's fault, its shitty people's fault.
