Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

as someone who worked in the entertainment field, i wanted to say my two cents on this:

it was not alec baldwin's job to check that gun for bullets or for blank fragments. there is a props manager and (there should be) a union safety manager on set who not only checks the gun for actual bullets, but is supposed to check for debris in the barrel and defective blank rounds as well. This is 100% the prop manager's issue. We don't know if it was straight up BULLETS or if it was defective blanks that alec shot- but either way he never should've been handed that gun. There is a whole CHAIN of people that exist to make sure Alec can handle the gun without checking it because they need to do a million takes. He wasn't playing with it, he wasn't fucking around with it, they were filming.

similarly to theatre, any gun that is not in use, even if it's the fakest gun ever and made of wood, is to be kept locked up with the proper manager until it is to be used. It is then immediately retrieved from the actor when it's done being used. on a film set this can happen upwards of 300 times a day.

When you're on a film set, traditional 'gun safety' goes out the window. You DO point guns at people, you point guns directly at the camera, and more often than not, even if you're being extra cautious, you're surrounded by staff at any given time- from consultants and interns all the way up to the director- and ANYWHERE you point the gun is going to be inadvertently 'AT' somebody.

Alec should not be charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the props master who sent out the bad gun DEFINITELY SHOULD. Criminal negligence caused that woman's death.

I cannot IMAGINE the trauma alec baldwin is facing right now, let alone the friends, family and children of the woman killed. so many people are speaking up when they don't actually know shit about what occured.

There are people honest to god simping in this thread for some Hollywood blowhard that would call you a right wing racist shithead bigot just for having an account here. :story:

Getting some good trolling out of it

Malice has name dropped the farms before and is such a troll in general I sometimes wonder if he has an account here. Or just likes to laugh at horrible people.

Which Alec Baldwin is, by the way, not considering politics. He has a long history of being a shithead, maybe this isn't his fault, but why shed tears for the man? Save your sympathy for the people who he shot.

EXCLUSIVE It was one bullet that discharged from the prop gun on the Santa Fe movie “Rust” and killed the director of photography and wounded the movie’s director.

An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza.

Very quickly the set was locked down. Ambulance and helicopters arrived. Hutchins and Souza were sent straight to the hospital. Hutchins died en route in a helicopter.

On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”

“A hot gun” means a gun with real ammunition.

Baldwin, not knowing the fate of the victims, was taken immediately to the hospital. “He had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”

“Rust” is a Tier 1 one movie, meaning it was being produced for under $6 million. Our source says: “They had safety meetings every day but it was a Tier I movie, so they probably didn’t have more than 1 prop person.” According to the imdb, there was one key medic on the staff and two stunt people.

Whatever happened on the set, Alec Baldwin certainly didn’t intend for this outcome. And “Rust” is done. Sources say the production has been halted but as with the movie about Gregg Allman’s life, in which a crew member was killed because of negligence, lawsuits will now override any chance to that movie being finished.

lol at people moral fagging for Baldwin.

Dude would legit laugh at your death just because you post here on the farms. All while calling you an alt right bigot.

Have sympathy for the victims. They deserve it.

Baldwin tho? He does not. Because he sure as fuck would not show you any.

Michael Massee, the actor who inadvertently killed Brandon Lee with a blank round and is the closest analogue to what just happened, was never charged, criminally or civilly, for Lee's death.
People ITT clamoring for Baldwin to face charges because they dislike him personally should really tamper their expectations for his forthcoming trial, and maybe reflect a bit on what it does to someone to do your job and have someone die as a consequence of it, through no fault of your own.
I always felt bad for Massee and I feel bad for Baldwin(unless it turns out he tampered with the prop). The guy is a chode and a lifelong asshole but to be responsible for someone's death like that is not something I would want anyone to have to experience.

Agreed. If this was a prop fail it was not Baldwin's responsibility. But he still pulled the trigger and killed someone. That's a hard thing to live with, even without thousands of people on social media shitting on you. He might be a real asshole but I can't say that he deserved this, it's just sad all around.

The can still fire projectiles. That’s why in miikitary exercises that are live use a screw on adapter at the end of the barrel
That's not how BFAs work; they restrict the muzzle opening to increase pressure on the bolt-carrier group, which semi-automatic firearms need to function, otherwise they'd need to be manually operated (having to charge it after every shot). Bolt action firearms & revolvers can be used with either blanks or live ammo, and not need a BFA.

If your firearm has a BFA mounted, loading a live round or a blank w/ bore obstruction will blow the thing off the muzzle (possibly the muzzle-brake/flash-hider as well) with extreme prejudice & ruin everyone's day.

That's not what A-Logging means.
You can't expect a newfriend Baldwin stan to understand the basic terminology.

Imagine surviving a childhood in the Soviet arctic only to be shot dead by Alec Baldwin after getting to America and making a pretty successful life for yourself. Hollywood couldn't even come up with a story like that.

Well this was quick.

You’re probably aware by now that Alec Baldwin has allegedly shot and killed someone and injured another sending him to the hospital after “accidentally” firing a prop gun at his crew members during the filming of his latest movie, RUST.
In 2006, following a hunting accident where then-Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot someone during a hunting expedition injuring him, movie star and producer, Alec Baldwin, published an article at the Huffington Post calling Cheney a terrorist who needs to face trial.

In 2006, Baldwin wrote in the article titled Will They Go to Court?:
Cheney is a terrorist. He terrorizes our enemies abroad and innocent citizens here at home indiscriminately. Who ever thought Harry Whittington would be the answer to America’s prayers. Finally, someone who might get that lying, thieving Cheney into a courtroom to answer some direct questions.
The screengrab below is from the article originally published in 2006–and can only be seen in its original form with Alec Baldwin’s name on it in the archived version on the Wayback Machine.

The current version of this article available on the Huffington Post website has Baldwin’s name replaced with a generic screen name not tied to Baldwin. That version is currently live as of 10/22/2021 and the screengrab below is from this date.

The question now is, why would Baldwin’s name be removed from this article? Does Baldwin plan to hold himself to the same standards that he attempted to hold Dick Cheney?
The taking of someone’s life should–whether accidentally or purposely–should always be taken seriously. But accidents happen. When they happen, they should be thoroughly investigated, found out if negligence was involved, and if so, those involved should be held accountable. But let’s be real, Baldwin is a loud-mouthed hothead who’s always believed himself to be more sophisticated than everyone else and he believes he is above the law.
In 2017, Baldwin rhetorically asked how it must feel to “wrongfully kill someone.”

Now, he knows.

While we grieve for the family of the crew member who was shot, let’s not forget that Baldwin deserves exactly what he’s asked for of others.
Could someone archive this because I'm a luddite. thankyousverymuch

Prop Gun Fired by Alec Baldwin Contained Live Bullet, Says IATSE Local 44 — UPDATE

" IATSE Local 44, which covers prop masters, sent an email to its members early Friday morning that said the gun used in the scene contained “a live round” and the production’s propmaster was not a member of Local 44. Director Joel Souza also was hit and injured by a bullet and was treated at an area hospital before being released."

Archive for you, fren.

Well, this is going to be a shitshow.

Baldwin or the production company will probably get sued their butts off at most.

Well that and you also need the adapter for the gun to cycle. But that's irrelevant to your point and I'm just being a sperg.

Edit: whoops I'm late
