Alec Baldwin's 'prop firearm' kills one, injures another

Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Regarding the whole "blank fragments" or some other foreign object being propelled by a blank charge, would blank fragments (or perhaps to a lesser extent, another non-bullet foreign object), have the mass and shape to actually fully penetrate and pass through one body and into another?

This is basically what happened to Brandon Lee where a bullet became lodged in the barrel of the .44 pistol (as I recall) being used as a prop and, through a series of very unfortunate events, had enough energy to kill Lee when a blank was fired in the weapon.

I am VERY doubtful that a foreign object could do the damage described here. With a bullet passing through the Director of Photography, killing her, and having it pass through her entire body before lodging into the shoulder of the Director requiring him to be rushed to the hospital.

Not with a “cowboy action” revolver at any rate.

This also ignores the Sheriff’s office investigating saying there was a “live round” in the gun. And yes, I know there is Hollywood lingo calling blank rounds “live” and shoddy news reporting which doesn’t know the difference between a bullet, cartridge, and ammunition.

For now, I am assuming a “live round” was placed into the revolver that Alec Baldwin was given. It was probably a .45 Colt (Long Colt) but could have been any number of other calibers. This is a big, heavy round with more than enough juice to punch through a skinny Ukrainian camera lady and wound the man standing behind her.

How it got there?

That’s the question.

Negligence is certainly top of the list. And others have recounted plausible and implausible theories.

But again, I highly doubt a foreign object or obstruction in the barrel propelled by a blank caused the damage. Had to be a real, live round.

In my personal experience, it was drilled in to me that whenever a gun changed hands, for whatever reason, be it passing to an armourer for inspection, or handing it to someone while you tied your shoe, you both went through the procedures of passing the rifle/gun. You check to make sure it's clear, and the person inspects the chamber, face and mag. Then they take it off of you, do the same check again, then you inspect the chamber, face and mag. ONLY THEN are you both happy that the rifle has been passed over safely.

Why aren't actors (i'm sure there's a good reason) not taught these drills? When Baldwin received the gun, he should have checked, if not for only his own conscience, that it was clear.

As a member on set, I would not trust someone who was not proficient with weapons (Baldwin) to handle any weapon. Someone like K Reeves who shoots for fun? Sure. An anti-gun faggot? Not a chance.
Yep Keanu & The John Wick guys are passionate about guns and that inherently is paired with gun safety.

I am sure that with all the brass ejected in a John Wick movie those guys make sure everyone goes home to their families. But ol Lefty Sweetheart Alec Baldwin needs to hire non-union so his straight to VOD Cowboy movie isn't too much of a tax write off.

For all the people asking why they use blanks and not toy guns and CG: it's entirely possible to do muzzle flash and sound effects accurately in post and usually some kind of enhancement is done even with blanks, but you can't add in realistic recoil or the effects of air pressure on surrounding objects nearly as well.

If you want an example of what this look like watch "Casino" and pay attention to it's borderline comical firearms effects.

I hate to speculate, it would depend on the proximity of the weapon and the person. According to what is reported, the cinematographer died slowly suggesting bleeding out (laceration to the neck or other artery) and the director was hit with another fragment at the shoulder. Going off of this, it could be speculated that the cinematographer was the closest to the fired pistol with the director behind her probably watching a monitor of the shot. He more than likely survived due to the distance and placement of the fragmentation, in this hypothetical scenario, while she sustained the most energetic hit due to her proximity. But again, this is just speculation; not hardened fact.

Thanks to that incident, Alec Baldwin is a source of inspiration of new memes.

There are plenty of stage-guns that replicate recoil & gasses, using compressed air and/or battery/motor, which drives a weighted bolt & causing the thing to bounce around. They were originally developed by the military for virtual range training & qualification, with everything from Berettas to Brownings. After that, adding extra CGI effects is easy & mostly outsourced.

However; these systems are complicated, require more maintenance, malfunction fairly often, and can cost much more than a normal replica firearm.

I was gonna say something like this too, but then I realized a blowback system doesn't work with a revolver.

I've only heard of one; emulating a full-length S&W 500 (or similar), using a capacitor-driven weight housed underneath the barrel; if I recall correctly, it utilized the guts from a tazer & had enough juice for only a couple realistic(ish) shots.

The entire reason it exists(ed) was because the shot needed to be filmed extremely close to the handgun, and the cylinder gap blast from even a lightly-charged blank would've been detrimental to both the shot and equipment.

Add: The thing wasn't meant to be a movie gun; it was used internally to test scopes/mounts, for simulating high round-counts without the cost.
