Actor Alec Baldwin discharged a "prop firearm" that killed a cinematographer and injured a the director of the movie Rust, being filmed on a set south of Santa Fe, a county sheriff's office spokesman said late Thursday.

Halyna Hutchins, 42 and the director of photography for the movie, died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The film's director, Joel Souza, was hospitalized in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Juan Ríos said.

A source closed to the investigation said Baldwin, 63, was questioned by investigators late Thursday and was seen by a New Mexican reporter and photographer in tears.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the incident was an accident, Ríos said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains open, Ríos wrote in a news release.

The prop was fired at Bonanza Creek Ranch, where filming was underway, the sheriff's office said in an early evening news release. Baldwin stars in the production.

Hutchins died from her injuries after she was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving emergency care, the sheriff's office said. Attempts to get comment from Baldwin were unsuccessful.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” John Lindley, the president of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, said in a statement, as reported by Variety. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Deputies were investigating how the accident occurred and "what type of projectile was discharged," the sheriff's office said in an earlier news release.

Rust Movie Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Filming for Rust was set to continue into early November, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office. It's described as the story of a 13-year-old boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, with New Mexico doubling for Kansas.

Guns firing blanks have been blamed for deaths in past movie productions. Online Hollywood news site Deadline reported, "Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed Oct. 18, 1984, on the set of the TV series Cover Up when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after he was shot in the head by a gun firing blanks on the set of The Crow. Both incidents were determined to have been accidents."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

New Mexico authorities issue warrant for Baldwin’s phone

Maybe all those interviews were a bad idea. Can't wait to see what kind of text messages he's been sending to everyone.

Embattled actor Alec Baldwin left home alone Friday — seemingly still toting the cellphone that investigators have issued a search warrant to get.

The 63-year-old actor, looking exhausted with heavy bags under his eyes, left his downtown apartment hours after the warrant turned the heat up on his role in the deadly shooting of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Dressed down in a dark gray T-shirt and pants, the weary star was alone as he loaded personal items into a waiting SUV — including his ever-present cellphone, which he placed in the truck while loading other belongings.

His phone took a central role in the two-month investigation into Hutchins’ death on Thursday when the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico issued a search warrant for it.

Investigators were forced to issue the warrant because the star — who was also a producer on the deadly “Rust” set — refused to hand over his phone without one, the sheriff’s department said in the document.

Oh wow, you killed someone and now you have to think about it EVERY day? Gosh, must be tough, stay strong Alec!

In the video posted to Instagram on Thursday, Baldwin said he was “home with my family” for the holidays, adding that “all I care about is my wife and kids, and just moving forward with my life — trying to get through a tough time, a really tough time.”
How about the family of the woman you killed, you absolute fucking scumbag?

Agree, he won't see jail because he's a celeb. I bet he's squaring up the hush-money as we speak.
His own antics have resulted in his Twitter getting purged and his phone confiscated.

At this point, there’s probably some very angry people up in Hollywood, as the only reason for running ops to resolve blame so he’s still bankable. If he’s now going to be box office poison, there’s less motivation to try to save him.

To his benefit, California law could have him spend a maximum of four years in prison, he could easily get lawyers to talk them down to less than six months or suspended sentencing.

I've said from the beginning, and I'm prepared to eat my words, that he'll never see the inside of any jail cell over this. At best he gets some weak version of celebrity token probation and community service. But, his career, is over. He'll be embroiled in lawsuits for years and considering he was already doing vanity-level B pictures, no AAA studio work will ever come his way again.

It's not enough for killing another person, but, for an egoist like him, it'll be amusing to watch his constant meltdowns as he goes in and out of civil court and continues to whine that we don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.... he's weawy weawy sowwy!

Baldwin is no longer a main, bankable star after this. His career is as good as dead. The best he can hope for is to go in to full retirement, or disappear from the limelight for a couple of years, and come back as a supporting role, like Tommy Lee Jones in No Country for Old Men.

Baldwin is an attention whore though, so i expect lots of money to be thrown around and him swapping to non violent roles. I can't see him been trusted around an on-set firearm again.
I wonder how much the dead girl's parents will sell her life for?
More than what her husband will sell it for.

Totally agree. One rule for the elites, another for the rest of us.
Watch "the gun was supposed to not have been loaded when it was handed to me" become a legal precedent.

That said, I do hope Baldwin's at least charged with something, so Menotaur has to take that six-month ban from the Farms he's rolled the dice on.

I'd give good odds he'll end up in jail at some point, but not over this; most likely when he forgets that he's used up all his alibis & favors, even ones he hasn't used yet. It won't surprise me either, when he starts showing up on shows for shitty washed-up celebrities, where he can be milked of his sob story & self-victimisation. And the inevitable desperation means he'll be easily baited into making a further ass of himself, as long as it means a paycheck.

As it is Christmas and the time of miracles (at least for another five and a half hours), I would optimistically point out that Michael Avenatti's life was utterly ruined for less than flat out killing someone, and he was arguably higher profile than Baldwin in terms of people whom the left liked to suck the dick of. Baldwin fancied himself some court jester who was going to help take down the Evil Orange Dictator, but Avenatti saw himself as the one to do it. Remember, Avenatti was being feted as a possible 2020 Presidential candidate.

The point of this weird comparison is that if they took down Avenatti, then a schlub actor like Baldwin with a history of spouse (and, arguably, child) abuse might get his just desserts.
