All of the delivery stuff sounds nightmarish, and I have kids so it is. However, for most, labor and delivery are just a day or two, and if all goes well, you raise a child for 18 years.
Assuming the plan goes perfectly and her child is fine, she still cannot raise it. The chances of an addict stepping up to care for an baby after just a few months of sobriety is nil.
The first 3 years are intensely hard. Kids need so, so much. Everything. Parents get no sleep, feed constantly, then watch them when they get mobile, then energy that lasts all day. She simply can’t do it, which means her parents will have to step in. Or his parents.
I can’t imagine how devastated they must feel. While you are parents forever, at some point the caregiving ends and then it’s about love and temporary support if necessary. These parents are going to have to start all over again. Their lives are over.
I wonder if they ever had an opportunity or even considered sterilizing her? Some Downs parents are able to-it’s controversial for some reason but it’s entirely appropriate. I guess they didn’t think about how dumb their daughter would be.
This woman has a short life expectancy, has no strength to raise a kid and it’s entirely unfair to the baby and parents.
And that’s best case scenario.
