It was neither. It was monopoly money. Invented.

Alex never had 20k in liquid capital at one time. Most of all of his resources come from Disability. His Mother WAS well off. She's not now. She's had to spend 100k (not 50) in attorney fees for him. His mother also financed a trip they took to Cuba. Alex has never held a job and he's never been a success in any field of employment or career. He couldn't even get an Associates Degree or finish a single year of University. 20k would be over a years worth of salary for him.

Alex's house isn't mortgaged, correct. He doesn't own assets. His mother does. And she only has one property. Which is one a second mortgage. His mother is actually somewhat successful, but she's stretched thin by her rapist Son's legal fees. Even if he gets the property when she dies, it'll default on the loan and he won't have it anymore. He could try to short sell it to pay off the loan and pocket the little money he could make out of it, but I think he'll be in prison or a psych ward when his mom dies, so it doesn't really matter.

Alex hasn't made money. He's cost people money. He's a drain financially, emotionally, mentally, physically. He's a net loss to everyone around him and the species as a whole.

For anyone who thinks his brain damage caused him to be like this; it didn't. He's always been like this. In fact, before his injury (which was caused because he tried to rip off a drug dealer) he was found to be guilty of sexual assault and would act out in angry and violent ways. This cretin doesn't deserve any kind of sympathy or understanding. He doesn't deserve to be treated like a human, because he's not. He's evil. He has no redeeming quality.

He has. 3-4 times. last stint was about a month. Ontario/Canada is really fucking weird about their court/jail records. They tend to seal them after x amount of time has passed (usually a 1-3 years) and they want people to jump through hoops in order to get the records/transcripts.

He's a habitual offender of violating his peace order. When he violates it, he'll usually turn himself in and they'll hook him up. The Judge will see that he has half a functioning brain and cut him slack. Which is what he banks on. He knows what he's doing and he does it with impunity.

I'd say he was insane, but he's not. He's very much sane. He's just an evil and calculated manipulator.
