These sites have a lot of great info:
privacytools.io
prism-break.org

GOG is great for games since it offers them DRM free and they have offline installers for all their games. Or just pirate shit.
There's some decent stuff on itch.io too. DRM free as well.

Folks have created alterative instances for popular services. They serve up the content from them, but doesn't track you.

Nitter - https://github.com/zedeus/nitter (Twitter)
Invidious - https://github.com/omarroth/invidious (Youtube)
Piped - https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped (Youtube)
Bibliogram - https://github.com/cloudrac3r/bibliogram (Instagram)
OpenStreetMap - https://wiki.openstreetmap.org (Google Maps, et. al)

Piped uses javascript while Invidious doesn't.

Here's a chrome extension that forces all links and instances of those sites to redirect to the alt ones:

These guys make great browser addons. Mostly Dark Mode and Smart HTTPS

Also, for *nix, some non systemd distros. People don't like it because its becoming ever so encompassing part of linux.
Void Linux (not based on any big distro) - https://voidlinux.org/
Artix Linux (Arch) - https://artixlinux.org/
Calculate Linux (The sane version of Gentoo) - https://www.calculate-linux.org/
GhostBSD (FreeBSD) - https://www.ghostbsd.org/

Probably use Debian for Babbies first linux. Or Linux Mint or Elementry. idk.

edit: more info on alt instances (stolen from some anon):
The modern internet is evil, its heavily centralized nature gives the power to the corporations that controls it to do what they want with their users which means often abusing them, while at the same time the lack of alternatives caused by the combination of the network effect[1] and the sheer amount of resources needed to create such alternatives puts us in the position of having to rely on some of these services even if they abuse us.
This thread is not necessarily dedicated on complaining about all of this, but instead it is about finding and discussing "less evil" ways of using the centralized internet.
So I'll start to list the one I knows, most of these are alternative clients to centralized services, some are alternative services altogether, I expect most of you to already know about most of these but putting them together in a tidy reference doesn't hurt:

nitter
Nitter[2] is an open source[3] Twitter front-end written in Nim:

Bibliogram

youtube-dl
Youtube-dl[13] is an open source[14] command-line video scraper with multiple supported services written in Python:
+ Can be used with Tor, with torsocks.

None of the above solves the inherent problems of the modern internet, but it should make your experience less cancerous to the least. Add your own ways of lessering the evils of the modern internet in the thread.

You can't compete in a marketplace with someone who has operated at a loss for their entire existence and is fueled by CIA black budgets and Saudi investment. The profits of your minimum viable product will never be enough.
Alt tech will always fail.

If you look at social networking services like Gab, Parler, Minds, BitChute, Telegram, and Discord they have seen a high success rate.
Which of these other than discord is supposed to be a success?
You named a bunch of colossal failures.
Discord isn't an alternative, it is the mainstream and most used voip/chat client. I can't even think of an alternative other than Zoom which is a different niche.

In summer 2020, people like Ted Cruz, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, The Hodgetwins, Katie Hopkins, Imam of Peace, Diamond and Silk, Dinesh D'Souza, Phil Robertson, Jo Jorgensen, Andrew Pollack, Brandon Straka, Peter Boykin, and Kaya Jones joined Parler after Twitter started to censor Conservatives, Republicans, and Libertarians.
So... nobody?

Good thing a lot of the devs that work on these projects do it for free and usually open source so anyone else can step up if someone steps down.

What I'm trying to say is that Parler is gonna become very popular amongst Conservatives, Republicans, and Libertarians, but it's also becoming popular amongst free speech activists.
>popular only among a specific ideological segment
lol call me when your tech illiterate aunt uses it to talk to her boss like a normal person

If you think Gab is a success you are broke in the brain. Minds is shit tier too. Discord is not 'alt-tech', it's a tranny grooming farm. Parler is sponsored by the same bankrollers behind Breitbart, it will likely be abandoned soon.

Telegram is a different matter, it's actually functional and has a user base.

Well in some aspects of technology, Discord would be considered alt-tech because of its encryption and that a lot of free speech activists use it.
Discord doesn't have any encryption beyond your messages going to their servers over HTTPS. All messages are stored on their servers in the clear and regularly searched through by their employees. You're safer to communicate securely using Facebook (it will be Flip single moms reading your messages instead of tranny furry pedos).

If anyone you associate with as part of any remotely controversial project has told you Discord is 'safe', disassociate from them completely, they are either mentally deficient or part of a plot to entrap you.

Thanks for the mention.
Fyi I was one of the first to join Parler yet ai never developed it. Also the morning of the day after the election Facebook started limiting pro Trump admins. They then disabled my over 10 year account. The amount of censorship is out of hand.

Fyi I perfer Telegram

Well for those who like encryption and support free speech, it's a perfect service for them.
But not an alternate service to anything.
There is no second Discord which they are choosing not to use.

Also what the fuck are you talking about? Discord is not encrypted and will ban you for saying nigger.

Discord will ban you for saying cub porn is morally questionable.

Discord --- Spyware Watchdog
Recommending a chink botnet and then another chink botnet
I'm starting to think you're not posting in good faith.

Discord will pay up to 10000$ of your medical costs if you troon out. Someone should probably add that to the image.

What about BitChute?
Meh, if you don't mind cloudflare and that the entire userbase seems to be radioactive stormfront niggers it's alright. I don't think their business model is viable though, we'll see if they start selling userdata to stay afloat.
