People criticized The Boys for being afraid to kill characters. But Invincible has cast wide plot armor.
I mean it's not as egregious as The Boys since Invincible at least gives some plausible deniability for how some characters aren't fully dead.

Whereas The Boys requires a lot of the villains to be nerfed a lot to give the main characters a chance or things to be extremely convenient. And that is because the show removes the fact the boys take compound V that enhances their strength.

I want whatever Kirkman smoked to turn Amber from a ditzy clueless blonde to some kind of girlboss shoving Mark into lockers. Comic did a much better job of making fun of realities of being a superhero. Mark and Amber separate as them as an inderstructible superman and a normal human woman are so incompatible they'd be living two different lives anyway, and Eve admits her sabbatical to "feed starving children in Africa" was all a bullshit excuse to try to forget about Mark so she doesn't steal him from Amber. She also complains about how everything she grew for them withered instantly and how pointless her LiveAid larp was. Show treats it 100% seriously which is unintentionally funny.

Episode was nice. Had some cool action sequences, more Machine Head screen time which is always nice, and ooh boy the next three episodes will be a smoke-show.

**BIG FUCKING SPOILERS, DO NOT EVEN THINK TO CLICK IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE COMICS**

And yes, I say this every week but up until Kirkman doesn't make Angstrom Levy appear again and show his army of Invincible coming from other realities to beat planet Earth and its heroes to a pulp, you'll hear me say this every week.

Also I do love that they gender-swapped Shrink Rae, kept her alive and have her hang out with Rex.

Fuck.

One thing they did change from the comics was Amber getting beat by her new fiancée. They removed that from the show, God forbid a black woman gets beaten by a white guy.

theres still time. we might not have gotten to that part just yet

The inevitable Rex special is going to fuck me up. That side story was some of Invincible's best writing.
I assume you have read the comics, brother.

All these scenes with Rex and Rae are so sweet.

HEAVY COMIC SPOILERS And you damn know what's going to happen in a couple of episodes.

I appreciate that they brought the fake dead characters back in the same episode. I hope we get an update on that Egyptian mummy guy.

Egyptian mummy guy is only in the show iirc and there for a one-off gag, so don't hold your breath.

I think the difference is the Boys tries to be a lot more edgy and critical of the genre where Invincible just kinds of celebrates it in all it's goofiness.

Spoilers for the end of the Invincible Comic

I still think it's hilarious that Eve literally dies from old age then a second later rejuvenates to her younger self and Mark's Only reaction is "Neat".

I think it's neat that in the end Mark takes Omniman's made-up-for-kids story of the Viltrum Empire and runs with it. I also found it charming that so many characters had a redemption arc of sorts, seems kitchy now but I liked how Mark doesn't always just punch a problem away. The only irredemable characters were IIRC Yakub and Freddie Mercury. And even Freddie gets a chance to be a hero, in his own way.

Reason why I love how they treated Eve's powers in the show, during Angstrom Levy's introduction in season 2. They had Mark snap her vertebrae instead of straight up kill her, so her powers wouldn't awake and resurrect herself.

They'll definitely keep the "full reveal" for the Conquest fight, even if they showed her capability to alter living organic matter in her special. The average show viewer probably already forgot about it and/or attribute that outburst of her powers to Eve' sudden trauma and/or being younger.

For supposedly a intergalagtic superpower, the Viltrumites never show any advanced tech and just... Punch things? That's as if WW2 America deployed people and won WW2 by punching their way through shit.

Fuck, Viltrumites could carry and detonate a nuke in melee range. They should be able to make a metal so dense it can withstand a tank shell and cut Viltrumite skin. They could push planets and moons out of orbit or other creative shit...

Instead they just punch people while wearing spandex suits... Lame.

We're manufacturing shells capable of rending stars in half, and this guy just face-tanks it... maybe he is a god after all?

They don't have the manpower to research tech. There's barely 50 of them in the universe, and their empire is barely holding on because of their poor numbers, so no reinforcements nor checking up on what your slaves are researching.

Aside from the weaknesses described by Nolan in his books, and the ear equilibrium stuff (which isn't that much debilitating, if you train against it), they are pretty much the strongest beings in the universe, rivaled only by Battle Beast and a few others.

So yeah, why bother making a nuke when you are it?

It's part of the 'charm' of the series embracing its comic roots. In that Viltrumites are Superman parodies. So instead of inventing new technology, medicines, diplomacy, art. They just brute force their way through existence and are passively nearly immortal. Including literally just flying through space by themselves. It's the laziest style of writing and world building but also part of the parody aspect of the comics. How Superman, Captain America, Batman, and those old school heroes just punched their way through everything. Same with Dragon Ball (which is obviously a major influence on Invincible) or even satirical pieces like One Punch Man.

People will offer you explanations for why the Viltrumites just punch their way through the story. But the true answer is that the writing is meant to make readers and viewers laugh at the absurdity of comic books. Invincible is a love letter to comics but also deliberately including the most ludicrous plots and tropes for fun.

This isn't that kind of comic. The writing is meant to be superficial and ridiculous. You either accept the campy sillier elements of the series or hate them. If you are looking for a serious take on superheroes then Invincible is the wrong choice. This is the show where everyone comes back from the dead over and over. Villains constantly pause before finishing the hero only to be finished themselves. And power levels make zero sense.

"You think you look strong.......you're wearing a cape".

What are you trying to do here? What do you even think a "serious" take on superheroes is?
