My assumption is they were normal at first but adopted their retard space barbarian ubermensch eugenics culture after they discovered they were the strongest species in the known galaxy. Saiyans in DBZ at least make sense. They venerate fighting and strength because it thrills them on a biological level. It's literally ingrained in their DNA to love the thrill of combat for the sake of it so that became a normal part of Saiyan life.

But they aren't eugenicists, Saiyans with low power levels are bullied and called weak but they aren't culled or purged. Fighting is just a part of the culture, not an active ideological position like with Viltrumites.

For Saiyans becoming stronger is the journey, but for Viltrumites it's the goal. A retarded one, as is obvious.

To be fair, the comic really doesn't get into any sort of numbers breakdown about how many died to the virus directly or died in the rumble pit after being weakened by the virus, just that both happened and as a result 99.9% of old Viltrum is dead. It's pretty strongly implied at least that the Viltrumites kept killing each other in the rumble pit while the virus was sweeping through and that the death toll would've been lower if they hadn't.

There's a lot of things that we could say to make this shitshow make a bit more sense

See how evil and WRONG Viltrumites are!?"
