Mother of God--it's a total eclipse of the Christmas tree.

I guess this is what a water tower would look like if it suddenly came to life and got excited.

View attachment 244642 For the sake of making Amber explode with jealousy and rage (while pretending to be happy for them), I really hope this is an engagement ring on Dana's finger.

Edit: It's not :( she just answered me back on Snapchat. I told her I hope they do get engaged one day though.
But these Lolcows know the difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring. You should ask her if it's a "promise" ring. If so, this would be the third promise ring that Destiny has given, right?

The credit card thing seems weird to me. Here if you get caught with a card under someone elses name, the card is will be taken from you and the store will call the police. Even if you have a permission to use it and know the code. Are things different in the us or is hamber and dustin breaking the law?

Does Amber even have a bank account? Surely you need ID in the US to open one of those?

Even if she did have her own account I'm sure I heard reference to a joint account once (which, by the timing, must have been opened after her ID was lost so may actually be D's bank account they used jointly) - maybe all their money was put into that and, if Amber didn't have access to a card on that account prior to their split, Destiny's only option would be to give her a card in her own name or to be there to pay every single time A wanted more tat from Walmart. And, conveniently, if Destiny had to be there to pay then she might as well take Fat Al with her. That wouldn't get old quickly...

Amber seems to insinuate herself incredibly deeply - and very fast - into the lives of her partners., the tentacles root deep. This is the kind of arrangement that sounds just fine when a naive couple start living together but is incredibly hard to untangle and can be used by one party to maintain links and control with the other when it all goes tits-up. And maybe it's an American thing, but I've never heard of prepaid debit/credit cards. Gift cards for a set amount for a particular store yes, but that's not how it came over - and if it were that, why would she be so evasive? I'm amazed by how many Americans still deal in cash, maybe Amber was one of them? The "christmas present" is the sort of lame-arse cover story she'd come up with rather than explain she's a) dependent to the nth degree and b) the lengths exes will go to in an attempt to disengage her hooks. The world's biggest lamprey on your back must get a bit tiring.

Dunno. It's all speculation. But that's just a big word for gossip....and THAT is why we're all here!

Info about how CC and financial stuff works for poor/ bad credit people in the USA

A lot of low-income people rely on pre-paid credit cards in the USA so they can buy stuff or pay bills online. (Some financially savy people use them too to limit spending or they are given as gifts etc.. but that's not the real market these things are aimed at)

Regular "real" credit cards require someone to have good credit and if you don't you can get one. First it was just companies who let you send them $500 and they gave you a credit card with a $500 limit, then if you handled that well for about a year they gave you a tiny credit line with ungodly interest rates and penalties. Some larger companies decided to get in on the action and just do pre-paid CC but they will never evolve into an actual credit card with a credit line. Once the money is gone, or not re-upped- the card is done.

Before these pre-paid cards poor/low income people without bank accounts and/or bad credit were forced to use cash or money orders to pay all their bills - which is a pain in the ass - and it also meant they couldn't buy things online. The pre-paid CC's were an answer to online bill paying, but even more so a way to ensure a significant portion of the lower-income bracket had a way to buy things online.

When it comes to poor neighborhoods - western union, pay day loans, check cashing places, pre-paid cards, money orders, rent to own furniture, etc.. are a way of life and you see them everywhere. There is an entire financial industry built around taking advantage of low income people at ridiculous profits. Ironically it's expensive to be poor in the USA. Most financially savvy and/or well off people don't pay a dime in interest for credit cards.

If you're ever interested in reading more about the subject reporting on the "pay day loan" industry is very eye opening and the book "Nickel and Dimed in America" is great too even though it's about 15 yeas old now.

She probably just made Hamber an "authorized user" on her card. My husband and I do this with CC. If the card is in my name I make him a AU and then we get a card with his name on it and vice versa. Stores here are weird about policies as far as verifying if it's your card or not - some are strict and some don't ever check. I"m usually surprised when a store asks to see my ID when I pay because it happens so infrequently - usually only if I'm in a not so great neighborhood or for a large ($500 plus) purchase.

I don't know about an American thing, but it's a thing. Prepaid visa debit cards that can be used anywhere that accepts visa. You sign for them like a credit card, but once the money is gone you can't use it any longer.

Dunno if we do those here, I'd never heard of it. See, the farms is educatifying my fat arse!

Although I agree that it would be gone ten days into January (since others have posted I'm more inclined to think it was to give her access to the joint account - if there even was one, and it wasn't all just put in D's account. No ID/"opened joint account" does not compute) it'd be telling if this were the case. All that endless plastic crap she bought Destiny, just to get a no-thought-involved card. That's usually what we give people when we really can't be arsed to think about them for long enough to choose something, or distant relatives where it's practical. If my SO gave me a gift-card, I'd know we were done.

But Al wasn't buying Destiny's love, not at all. I dunno whether to feel sorry for her or to be appalled at either her manipulation or naivety. It's obvious she was picking up "I'm done" vibes - was that ridiculous gift splurge desperation or manipulation?

@MirnaMinkoff Can't post "likes" or whatever, so OT but thanks for this. I've actually got the Ehrencan'tspellhername book - it's pretty much the same here, people just juggle endless high-interest cards and never manage to pay off the principal.

Soz for PL, but I work in finance. The irony is how many people in the industry don't have credit cards, pension schemes, high-rate/high-risk saving schemes etc etc etc. And they would never, ever touch things like payday loans. The entire industry relies on ignorance, desperation....and people like Al, who have no impulse control whatsoever. See/want/buy is an incredibly lucrative mindset she displays to perfection, and these are the people most likely to be juggling endless credit cards and neglecting the important things like rent. That actually feeds the behaviours as the buying high staves off the worry. And although banks are bound by law regarding things like ID, the unsecured credit companies are far more lax - you can get a storecard with the flimsiest proof of ID, such as a household bill. Being poor is expensive in a number of ways, but the venal finance industry make it much, much worse. This is the level where worrying about your credit rating isn't an issue - you can always get credit. But the terms get worse and worse.

I think with somebody who has an obvious acquisition problem like Al, we can't really judge their financial state by what they are or aren't buying. She buys things for the rush, and feeding that always supersedes other considerations. I bet Destiny's family did their collective nut when D got herself into leases, bank accounts and all the rest.

She's playing on the idea that a lot of the hammy crew around her resemble Destiny in one way or another. However, when she makes the joke it just seems tired.

She is never good at delivering jokes. Whenever she goes on one of her sarcastic bits during a younow, it never remotely funny. But then she just sits there so proud of herself trying to keep a straight face and once somebody makes a comment about it being funny, she starts laughing and patting herself on the back.

I honestly thought she was being mean and shady until I came here. She's so bad at things like this. I can't imagine ever going out and having a good time with her.
