Then he got a UTI while in recovery at home and was hospitalised again, kidney failure #2 happened. These are things your body does not bounce back from easy and he went home to recover rot, his skin infection never really healing the whole time and always with a drain attached it, and passed, alone at home, of heart failure. It only takes one single event for a cascade of very bad things to happen.

Late to the vet talk, but generally after the first year dogs should visit the vet once a year and cats every three years, unless an outdoor cat which is once a year. That's the standard, unless the pet gets ill or injured or senior (for chihuahua 8 years is not senior).
