Something like this happened in Philly a few years ago. Get it together Amtrak.

Hope everyone made it out alive. I always feel safer on trains than in cars. But then I see something like this and it makes me scared I might end up on a derailed train someday. I wonder what happened. Icy conditions? The ground looks rather shiny.

For those who don't know, the train that derailed is what is known as a Talgo train set. Talgos differentiate from regular trains in the fact that rather than each railroad car having eight wheels talgo trains only have four as two railroad cars share an axle. With this arrangement, should a train take a curve too quickly, the set can "shiv" meaning that the car on the left side of the axle will continue going forward while the car on the right side takes the curve, which results in what you see in the picture. On a similar note Talgos work the best with a broad gauge, hence their popularity in Spain, where the gauge is 5' 6"

Are the Amtrak Superliner cars regular or talgo?
