No, and I'm not sure where you guys are getting that from. They're just a non-federating Mastodon instance with some extra features that don't have activity types, so they can't work in federation. Quotes, edits, groups, etc. There have been no changes to data collection.

You have to verify who you are for a blue check, but you don't get any benefits from it, it's a wholly optional way for IRL's and e-celebs to avoid impersonation.

I'd actually like to see the actual numbers published on a month by month basis. We know he won't do it but god damn if it wouldn't be funny. I say this because I would fully expect him to pull some shit & fuck with the numbers to make appear like he has more users than he really does. Like the US government when they push unemployment figures.

I love how Torba consistently tries to make Gab out to be this last bastion of free expression when it's literally nothing but an aut right/qboomer circlejerk. Gab is a platform meant for free expression, but hornypost on main and you're a degenerate in Torba's eyes. Torba also advocated for mandatory ID laws for adult content a year or two back, if I'm not mistaken. Gab prides itself on being "a social network that champions free speech, individual liberty and the free flow of information," but Torba has no problem with trying to push the overton window for discussions to get his way. I'm not gonna discredit the few people who have meaningful conversations and made actual friends on Gab. Shit like that happens no matter where you go. However, it still baffles me when Torba tries to make Gab sound much better than it actually is.

Look at the highlighted posts on Gab's home page as a non-user, and what do you find? It's nothing but politisperging. Even before I had all the context on Andrew Torba's character, I never once thought of joining because it looks like the same type of circlejerk I tried to escape from Facebook but on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Add onto this how Gab's incurred no shortage of outages/breaches, their abhorrent privacy policy, and the fact that Torba has no fucking idea what he's doing half the time, and you have a recipe for autistic disaster.

3.2m followers and yet most of his posts on Gab barely crack the 1k mark in terms of overall engagement (if what's publicly viewable is anything to go off of).

Also, paying the ransom is pointless, the people who did this don't want money, they want to watch Gab (and by extension Torba) burn. No one will cash out that cool half-a-mil in bitshekels, they might donate it to some woke charity. The point would be to bankrupt Gab.

I think I signed up for Gab some years ago, after some interesting people I follow got banned off the bird site and made Gab accounts. They largely don't post over there anymore, and I don't think I've gone there in years, because Gab is fucking garbage. Which in the end, all Twitter clones are; it's the lowest common denominator of social media. Gab doesn't even have the advantage of being a place to browse anime tiddies, so it is doubly worthless.

The 80/20 rule applies. People make accounts and most of them leave, happens everywhere. Torba is a default follow these days so getting a follower boost really doesn't mean anything except they got a wave of sign-ups.

GabFE relies pretty heavily on caching as well so it's entirely possible that after a certain point the count stops happening in real time.

I wonder what'll drive him to Chris Benoit himself and his family. Between slowly getting banned off of every payment processor and bank that doesn't involve bitcoin and having government officials declare that his site isn't kosher, I can see that kinda ending for him over the horizon. Then again he might just be too much of a narcissist to an hero if everything falls apart.
