At this point, Andrew Torba has squandered any potential growth for his stupid social media platform So let's review of why Gab is never going to be successful compared to Twitter and why even services like Mastodon has a far better chance to succeed then Gab ever will.
1. At this point, it's clear that Gab has no real intention of being a true platform for free speech anyway. Now say what you want about porn but really the fact that Andrew Torba has been going apeshit over it to the point where he wants the government now to babysit people online (irony much for a person that claims to be for smaller government) shows that he doesn't really have any real principles at all. Even websites like that of 8chan was still a far better free speech platform than Gab ever will.
2. Ever since the infamous Pittsburgh synagogue shooting that took place back in 2018, Gab is now form that point on is going to be associated with tons of crazy jackasses such as white supremacists, religious fundamentalists, Neo-Nazis, anti-Semites, skinheads, and all other kinds of crazies that think that they're going to start their own Iranian revolution in the west (which is never going to happen anyway). There's a really good reason why many people aren't going to jump ship from Twitter and join Gab because no one really wants to deal with these losers that haven't done anything with their own lives and probably still live in some loser trailer park too.
3. Now Andrew Torba seems to forget what made the mainstream social media platforms big to begin with. Take Tumblr as an example. Tumblr got so big because the website was open and tolerant to all kinds of people from many different corners of the Internet. This is why back then the people that did porn be it artists, models, porn stars, and so on used it to promote themselves and that was also one of the biggest motivators for people to go on Tumblr anyway. But Tumblr pretty much died and fell out of favor from the more tech savvy youths when they decided to ban porn altogether and resulted in the website falling out of favor and so it has been into a massive decline ever since. Sure, Tumblr was really cringy at its peak but you really can't deny how huge it was back then. If you want to succeed in making a social media platform then you have to look at the others in what made them so big in the first place. Just have good optics or you will fail.
4. No one is going to use whatever Gab is going to offer in the near future. No one is going to make their own forks of Gab because the source code is just to shitty to use. No one is going to use their browser extensions because I'm pretty sure that they probably have plenty of security holes too. And since it looks like Gab is going to launch their own video sharing service (possibly a streaming service?) then no one is going to use that too because a website Youtube is still far too big and there are far better alternatives to Youtube anyway such as Bitchute which they aim to allow content that Youtube won't allow (in which Bitchute actually cares about free speech since their goal it to be like what Youtube used to be long before cooperate greed and politics ran the platform into the ground).
Overall, Gab is well a total failure. The average millennial and zoomer isn't going to use it because no one is going to use a social media platform that hardly anyone uses. Advertisers aren't also going to cozy up to Gab because it's just bad PR to work with a dumb boomer that lets people making a lot of vile posts about minority groups all day long. And Andrew Torba is going to end up being a washed up loser when the next big thing comes in to replace Twitter and I can guarantee that it won't be Gab that will replace Twitter because if Twitter someday goes under then it will be a social media platform that will let people post all the porn that they want and be very open and tolerant of many kinds of people from many parts of the Internet too.
