This is sort of "saying it without saying it" but called it. They're closing the source code as soon as Mastodon't is gone.

They've made some embarrassing mistakes, but even if they hadn't, since they didn't go the route of user contributions and they gutted ActivityPub anyway, closing the source makes a lot of sense.

I'm not surprised about it, or upset. I'm just disappointed, they could've made FOSS great again, but they weren't the right guys for the job.

After Bowers, Gab started getting cancelled from everywhere, the old dev team quit, Andrew panicked and lost his fucking mind, sent FBI data and starting banning everyone, and the site was pretty much a disaster for the following 6 months (even more than usual.) The fallout from that is what ushered in Rob Colbert and the current brand of incompetence Gab deals with.

But yeah, that incident is why they're so strict on fedposting and pushing Christianity over /pol/ these days. I think, most likely, it wouldn't go down that way again, but I can't blame anyone for not trusting Gab after 2018.

Annoying.

It's understandable that they don't have time for it between more important projects, but the responsible thing to do then would be to put a security warning on it, or take it down entirely. Most of their users don't know any better.

Update: I think I (and others) convinced him to maintain it. I don't buy for a second that they *just* happened to rethink it now because of Google's ad program.

Gab officially altered their verification process, you don't have to present any ID anymore. All you have to do it link to your Gab account on another social media profile. https://gab.com/gab/posts/106013547791760752

This has my biggest privacy criticism of them for years, I wish it hadn't taken a disaster, but I'm glad they've fixed it now. In its current state even if Gab were hacked again, it wouldn't matter, because they don't have private messaging and they don't take any private data. I don't think you can say that for any other platform.

Gab will probably grow a lot off Trump's new site since it's basically the same demo. I expect full breakage.

It's pretty normal for traffic to drop off after a spike like Gab had. It will probably level off pretty close to where it is now until another spike.
 
Andrew has been crying over a business lolcow, Mike Lindell who is starting a competitor to Gab and Amazon, after initially pretending he was going to be supportive of Gab.

I think Mike is running a scam, but Torbo has been pouting like a scorned girlfriend and it's pretty funny. Unfortunately instead of making multiple posts, he just edited over the old one, and I can't see the history because my account is blocked, but here's the "Getting back together" post:
