Imagine a shounen battle manga with no good fight scenes.
That is why the characters are pushed more than the fights. Even then most of the fight scenes are interrupted with horny ecchi scenes ruining the tension. There is no difference between the first chapter and the last chapter, it felt like a colossal waste of time to me.
It is not a good manga and has an average anime because it has a great sub, dub and score. The animation gets worse the longer the show goes on and the manga has worse fights scenes as the story goes on.
Every fight is:
Fairy Tail meets bad guy. Loses.
Fairy Tail meets bad guy again. Says they love their friends and family.
Villain suddenly forgot their powers or is distracted by boobs.
Author rewrites the rules of magic (again) so Natsu and Erza (main characters) wins.
Repeat for every arc.
If you are around the shounen age bracket Fairy Tail would be odd because there is no great fight scene that you can look at and go: "This is amazing!" Just immense disappointment as all the fight scenes end with Fairy Tail guild winning handily (or Jellal the author's pet).
If you are older, Fairy Tail probably will not appeal because it cannot do drama, mystery or action very well. There are no stakes, no teeth to the action.
The manga flips flops between humor or drama and not very well at all. The humor works some of the time but drama needs room to grow and consistancy that Fairy Tail avoids.
Lost dragons? Not lost at all just endangered! Black Wizard Zeref? Actually a hebephille groomer, still immortal though! Impregnated a corpse...somehow. Also the cause of everything wrong in the series without doing anything. Acnologia? Hates dragons and dragon slayers. Do Fairies have Tails? No (last chapter, last page).
They are better choices like Hunter X Hunter or Black Clover (especially this one).
That is why the fandom is obsessed with shipping, because there is literally nothing else in the manga to go for except attractive people handing around each other. Very gooner friendly unfortunately.
Most of the canon ships are fucked beyond words but that is another story.
The author is hilariously surprised by how crazy shippers are while live drawing canon couples together on twitter/youtube live streams. Like, what did you think was going to happen?
Depression. Over-work. He just wanted to have fun and did not expect Fairy Tail to be so popular. He reuses a lot of his designs from Rave Master to Fairy Tail to Eden Zero and Dead Rock.
Only Eden Zero is cohesive and coherent story wise. Rave Master to a lesser extent also. Eden Zero tries to be a complete story with battle shounen fights. The others are just turn of your brain nonsense.
TL;DR: I used to be a fan of Fairy Tail but go tired of the story and the fights bored me. I do not recommend Fairy Tail. Read or watch Black Clover or Hunter X Hunter instead. Black Clover is similar but implements it's cast and action better than Fairy Tail ever could. Despite the Black Bulls squad and the Fairy Tail guild being literally the same.
