You want to read accurate translations of original scripts without the bullshit slang and memes that are already badly aged by the time they're wedged into the localization and makes every other character sound like something out of a TeamFourStar production only even less funny, and hordes of localization defenders will start screeching about how "uh, the slang adds sauce! Those boring Asian runes used in the speech bubbles in the original aren't important, and who cares what they actually mean?!?"
Localizers and their staunchest allies will say "no, you don't get it, we can't use honorifics in the translation of series set in rural Japan of yore but we need to get the characters in fantasy mangas to say wholesome chungus amazeballs upvote because otherwise it will sound BORING! If we DON'T use tiktok zoomer frfr-speak in our translations, how else will we get praise from morons on social media?!?"
This sort of garbage used to be relegated to English dubs and it has been creeping into subs and manga translations more and more. Localization doesn't have to be like this.

Let me guess, this is from a Seven Seas manga title? They're infamous for rewriting and adding stupid slang to their "localizations" and were caught censoring, rewriting and omitting text of light novels and manga they found offensive. Nevermind, it's from Viz. They used to do that shit when they'd release 30-ish pages of a manga in a comic book format.

I actually got curious and some of them have done some anime work albeit from years ago, in very minor roles, or has some western connections
Elden ring or SWTOR, but I know him for being the guy who has narrated almost every 40k book
Also Netflix not using Fly me to the Moon for Eva feels worse because they ended up using it Squid Game a few times in the first season.

So, someone here mentioned the The Flagrant Flower Blooms with Dignity since I'm a sucker for romance that doesn't meander. Went straight into the manga. So I have enjoyed it a lot for the most part, relatively grounded for what these series tend to be, romance advances (not at the rate I would want) but it's enjoyable, the main pairing bounce very well off each other and they properly communicate which is very refreshing. A bit too saccharine some times, the "guys from the rough school" are very much not delinquents and it's insane how incredibly nice Usami is when he seemed a lot wilder at the start for example. But the last 2 manga chapters have ruffled me a bit.
So, they have been insinuating that the teacher from the girls school will be a problem since like the first chapters. She is a non issue till literally like a couple of months from finals and entrance exams. The parents are completely fine with the relationship, the school has very little say when it comes to taking entrance exams. It just feels like the mangaka remembered that she set this shit up ages ago and should probably do a resolution. But it comes so incredibly late that it's a "who cares". "You cannot date due to regulations or be expelled" sure, fuck you, we "stop dating" for enough time to graduate, seeing each other anyway far from school, and that's the worst case scenario I can think of. If the parents have any sort of input, it's an instant non issue. And it's not like Kaoruko worships this lady or if her grades ever took a hit since she started dating Rintaro (another thing that just didn't materialize which would have made it make sense), so her being bitchy at her shouldn't really impact her flow much.
Aside from that, also decided to get back up to date on Hajime no Ippo. I last left off on the Wally fight. I'm amazed at how much time George can waste doing nothing. Turns out almost 3 years of accumulated chapters gave me the Wally fight (mostly crap), setup for Mashiba fight, the Mashiba fight (what a piece of shit ending, I'll bitch more later) and the start to the Sendo fight.
Everything is contantly going at a glaciers pace. Not an issue when you just read it in a sitting, but I can only imagine how miserably it must be for weekly readers. I don't intend to touch it again till a few years have passed or when George inevitable dies without being anywhere near the end. As for the Mashiba fight fuck you going with the "reality of boxing", having him lose and end up with brain damage, if I wanted to see this shit, I'd watch a documentary about any fucking boxer. Doubly rage inducing when the champion was a charicature that was intended to just be hated and had already accepted defeat, also copying the fucking peak that was the Kimura vs Mashiba end, what a fucking copout christ. I also assume this means the end of the Kumi Ippo relationship, which seemed like it was starting to actually fucking move forward, because assuming she doesn't end up with a brother that requires constant care (awesome way to end the whole "help my sister be independent" by becoming a fucking fruit), there is no way in hell Ippo can go back into the ring and have that relationship work. Which is also the next part, what incentive is there for Ippo to get back in? Your kindd of girlgriend would justifiable HATE it and you have seen one of your "friends" become a fucking fruit from it, what would you even achieve when you are still a faggot that can't see himself as a champion?
Anyway, enough raging. Ippo is an interesting series that's for sure.

It's one of the best series in the sueisha site by far. Too bad it's drawings are so... lolishota bait, because the narrative is fucking peak. Really looking forward to seeing where priest basically using demonic power and likely intermixing holy power in there as well will pan out. And my god, Lucifer basically being a shounen protagonist is peak.
Also, up to date with Dandadan, and still one of the more enjoyable shounen out there.

Another problem about the current state of the dubbing industry is that for some bizarre reason, there's more of a conscious effort to sound as close to the Japanese VAs as possible in these dubs (probably to appease the purists), and I believe that has affected quality. You are literally asking these newbloods to sound more like the originals instead of allowing them to get comfortable in their craft, and so it's no wonder everyone sounds so samey these days when they didn't used to. I can't remember if I mentioned the adverse to being "character actors" here or off-site, but that's the best way I can describe the issue at hand. No one wants to be "character actors", they just want to be "actors" or worse, themselves.

Part of what really bothers me in the localization debates are the people whose defense, as seen in cases like the fantasy manga referenced above, is that if a character in the Japanese original uses Japanese slang or informal language that means it's OK to translate it into something like "You better stand back for the GOAT!" or "crashing out my gyatt for the rizzler" and other nonsense.

Is it wrong/hypocritical to dislike the state of modern localizations/dubs for their slang insertions and not sticking to the damn script but still have a soft spot for the Lupin III Part II dub which partially does the same thing with references? I was thinking about this when I was playing Skies of Arcadia a couple of months ago where, if you weren't aware, the game's entire original script was more or less thrown out and rewritten by the English localization team before being brought over here. I'm curious why most people seem to be more or less okay with jobs like this while nowadays when people do it, it's a huge issue. Is it just because translators/localizers really ought to know better by now? I'm genuinely curious.

Reminds me of the SxF subs which have Anya calling people "shit-heads". Maybe that's really what she said, I just highly doubt it.

Lupin III is an adaptation that hardly betrays the spirit of the original since if anything it leans better into the comedy aspect of the series, like Lupin being noticeably more cheeky and horny, Goemon's VA making deadpan jokes and Jigen being like an old boomer. I don't remember there being that much memespeak and aside from a few instances (the reference to Ebay that is more due to higher-up meddling) most of the changes are usually to make jokes work better in English, like the pizza dough joke or that part where Zenigata argues with Lupin in disguise about their favorite James Bond actor.
Hell even the chicken nuggets joke is fucking hilarious because it doesn't really replace anything, it just inserts a funny bit where there would have normally been a meaningless piece of dialogue.
The best tl;dr i can make is that the dubbed lines still feel like things that the characters would say
