I watched EoE again on the Eva news, Asuka's scene is still some of the best giant robot fighting ever... and everything after that is some of the most pretentious shit I've ever seen. I feel like, despite the original run's buttfucked ending... it still worked, I like what it did with the limited time/resources it had. It was unique. EoE and the rebuilds are just using alchemy to keep a dead vision/gravy train running on opposite ends of the spectrum in response to fan backlash. I don't know how a new series can do something different, and it sure as shit will not look as good no matter how many debased fiat debt notes (yen) are thrown at it. I'll watch it, but it won't even come close to the original.

They'd be better off going for a subversion (yes I know how cringey that can be). Maybe going the Go Nagai route (what inspired Anno) and making Shinji into a chad-in-the-making and some Godannar shit. Or perhaps taking things seriously like the first time, and when it comes time for Shinji to nut up after Misato dies - he actually does, yells at his Eva to get in gear, it frees itself, they both join Asuka in the fight, and win the day. This would also prove to Asuka that Shinji is capable of wanting her and defending her in his own way. Other than that I have no idea what they'll do besides doing the exact same shit again but worse and with HORRID Cgi.

Meanwhile these frauds wouldn't dare name the banker money changing jews (visa/mastercard) who decimated the international pr0n market recently, not that I'd know :), but not having DLsite was a blow.
 
What even made Manhwa appealing in the first place? I legitimately cannot even name any Manhwa on par with a work by Naoki Urasawa or Kenji Tsuruta, aka nothing I can call kino. From what I know, most Manwha is apparently slop.

I only know the name of one notable Manhwa, Solo Leveling and from what I know it's literally just One Punch Man but in a MMO setting.

Wowie zowie, that was definitely worth dragging down the entire Manga community through the fucking ringer! Totally worth it to force Manhwa onto Manga sites to draw the ire of Kakao and other Korean companies to utterly buck break everything.

I call for #ExKorea!

I would say Breaker New Waves but that was an outright Manga done by a Korean instead of a Manhwa. Yeah, I know it means the same thing. But the first two series were done in the same black and white print with panels close together instead of a full page apart in color like the rest of the slop.

I think it all started with Tower of God. That's the one a friend recommended to me, and I watched the anime. It was okay, I liked the fights and some of the characters, but it never got a second season to my knowledge

My theory? The webtoonification of manhwa. Manhwa and Manhua(the chinese equivalent) used to exist, either korean writers with japanese artists(sun ken rock) or just the occasional "wow this is breddy neat" things like Breaker or that one exorcist manga whose name I'm forgetting right now.
Once webtoon hit the scene you got the perfect recipe for dumbing down a medium with an already very low barrier to entry.
You now have manga, but
  • It's colored==better(pay no attention to the paneling or actual artstyle sucking dick it's just better because colors bro)
  • It's in a long strip format, making it perfect for anyone wanting to read on a phone(🤮)
  • They also focus on hype moments a lot more, and I don't know how to describe it besides it being a caricature type of hype(think any of Kengan Omega) and somehow that resonates with their audiences of smartphone readers.

I really don't get this decision, it's not like any redittor will change the tarriffs. It's not even particularly that different cost of import compared to other countries, especially for just plastic molds. Them not refunding orders from the USA is just weird and I hope someone sues them for such bullshit.

You'd think this will be a call to just stop buying from greedy Japs and 3D print the figures for a fraction of the cost, similar to warhammer (which is somehow less greedy).

Season 2 of the anime came out in late 2024. Didn't watch it myself, but heard complaints that the animation was significantly worse than season 1, and that they doubled the episode count to stretch a part of the story some readers already consider 'boring' (introducing a new cast of characters and setting up for the season 1 characters' reunion) out unnecessarily.
I liked that part of the story in the comic, but looking at the episode synopses now it seems like they ended the season right at the part where things start picking up, so I can definitely see why that would upset the anime-only fans especially given the long wait time between seasons.
 
I was about to ask if Weeb Central is a good alternative, then I read the FAQ and I think this hole might be for me

Tower of God had a great series 1 (the manhwa, I haven't see the animation). Same with Magician, Kubera, Fairytale for a Demon Lord. There's some good stuff in there. It's just if they're successful they just persist and get bogged down in their backstories, become a slog to keep up with and you stop caring. And when you scratch the surface, you realise the remainder are more or less the same as amateur webcomics but Korea. Most of the effort is in initial inception and less so on long term goals.
As far as the classic black and white manhwa, I'd mainly be aware of Breaker, Immortal Regis/Cavalier of the Abyss. They'd be more on parity with manga.
I want to say that the thing that really brought them forward was actually a horror oneshot with some spooky jumpscares.
 
I am not too familiar with Manhwa, but I have the feeling it never managed to properly establish itself compared to manga same as "anime" from China. Both exist, but I can't recall them making any significant waves. I've only read The Breaker and Sun-Ken Rock which I enjoyed.

It(webtoon manhua) is apparently insanely popular in the way kpop is, as in it's somehow topping charts and has gazillions of fans and yet you've never heard of it and your limited interactions with it are enough to completely turn you off.

For the chinese anime they often happen to be really highly budgeted but in my personal opinion, very poorly produced/directed.

Like insanely popular worldwide ? With official distribution channels ? I gladly admit that I generally stay away from the most popular stuff in regard to anime and manga, but it's still a bit odd.

I haven't watched any shows from China or read more Manhua, so I can't comment on the quality. Any popular things one should watch/read ?

So does 99% of mangas that survive their first year. They'd grow in scope until you forget what even made them good to begin with.

Tower of God shitty animation and frantic pace (in first season) really ruined any potential it could have had.

All I remember from Manhwa was the breaker, and freezing. I lost kind of the breaker during the sequel. And I read Freezing until the step brother parts where he rapes her, and everyone is just cool with it. The artist knew how to drew incredibly hot women (to teenage me), but his plot was atrocious and the MC was always a passive cuck.
 
I'm just starting to watch anime regularly again after a year or two away from it. Got back into it in time to learn that torrent aggregator Anime Tosho is closing in May. (Archive) It's been my go-to torrent site for over a decade. No ads, no login required, no drama, minimalist and functional. The owner wants to move on after 15 years of maintaining the site for free, which I guess is fair enough. Not sure how popular it ever was, but I figured I'd document it here for posterity.

It's the only way I could wrap my head around people constantly asking for webtoons on sites when they get them killed or DMCA'd.

For shows there were a few martial arts in ancient chyna ones whose names I've forgotten about, there was a lone wolf and cub-esque bounty hunter one with some really jarring facial animations and another that had elemental guardians(the main character was either fire or metal? and there was some village girl apothecary and her duck(?) who tagged along) which for some reason had most of its available torrents in interlaced 60fps which looked godawful.
There's also To Be Hero X which I remember liking but not finishing, last I watched was the arc of that orphanage singer.

Been reading some more Tyranno. Sex Beast No8's arc is pretty wild.
