I wonder if these people who are afraid of the side effects take any medication or have to go to the hospital at all?

I had one antibiotic a few months ago where a side effect was listed as being "tendon rupture" which sounds absolutely horrific, but it was either gamble with that or continue dealing with a very real infection that would not go away on its own. The choice seems obvious.

The only way it's not comparable is that even if I had chosen not to take it for fear of a side effect, it would have only effected me. It's not fair at all these people essentially get to make these choices for everyone else.

Do parents get to decide not to give their kids antibiotics due to fear of rare side effects?

Here is Stephanie's Blog:

http://naturematters.info/

From her blog appearently she had a kid who died after getting vaccinated. The Doctor said the kid had a different problem called Alexander Disease.

http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/alexander-disease

She blames vaccines rather than the possibility her child was born with a severe genetic defect. She has 4 other books.

Goodbye Grandma

There's no worse moral crusader than a mother doing so in the name of her dead child. This idiot is the Pat Pulling of Vaccines.

At an art school I went to, we had quite a few people whose parents never vaccinated them and who refused to get them at 16+.

Whenever they were sick, they wouldn't go to a doctor. Their parents were absolutely paranoid that the doctors would lace antibiotics or pain relievers with da ebin vaccination drugs and thus vaccinate their children.

We had quite a few kids who got kicked out of school (you had to audition to get in) because they were sick nearly every week. Their parents threatened to sue because of discrimination, but missing 40 days of school a semester because you won't take your teenager with an ear infection to the doctor kind-of doesn't have a case.

Frankly, I think the parents whose kids are put at risk by these morons have a better lawsuit if the school refuses to throw out the disease vectors, both against the morons and against the school itself.

No idea if anyone has posted this here, but apparently some crazy parents are trying to flush out vaccines with bleach enemas.
What a fucking scumbag. Going around to poverty-stricken places like Africa and Mexico to abuse the desperate hope of people simply for the sake of making a quick buck; and not only that, but using potentially lethal chemicals on children. Homoeopathy is a crock of shit but I'll say this about them, at least a glass of scented water with magnesium isn't going to give a child an excruciating and prolonged death like a bleach enema does. Jim Humble being ex-Scientology explains a lot...

RationalWiki has an article on Miracle Mineral Solutions too. They've been operating for quite a while.

Oh this bunch of bell ends....

OK if you can't receive a vaccination because your immune compromised that's that's a legitimate reason to not get a vaccination.
But if your intentionally not giving your kid's vaccination's for horrible potentially fatal yet easily preventable diseases, your not just a ass your ignorant an harming not just yourself your harming your Children and the wider community out of selfishness.

What's needed genuinely is a public discussion of where individual rights end, an public responsibility begins.

I used to laugh at crazies like these, now I'm utterly depressed at the subject.
My own mother has recently become an anti-vaxxer.
She had a child 20 years after having me (I'm 23).
So my toddler sister is smack in the middle of Los Angeles, and that's terrifying.

My dad agrees with me on how ridiculous anti-vaxxers are, but he will not go against my mom.. So he has done nothing to get her vaccinated.

The worst part is, my mom is going by her friend's advice- a friend who didn't vaccinate her kids (to prevent autism) and guess what? Her kids got autism anyway. Knowing that fact my mom still will not budge on her beliefs.

I really, really, really feel helpless for my little sister. When I visit my family next week, I want to try to convince my mom face to face, but I'm sure that won't do anything.
It's really hard to just not outright scream at her-- but I hold back.. I'm pretty sure I'm going to snap one day though.

If worse comes to worse you could offer to look after your sister one day and explain to her why vaccines aren't harmful and try to take her to the doctors yourself. I don't think that's illegal.

@morning dove, yes i changed to a plague dr in 'honour' of the anti vacc crowd :) although that is perhaps unfair- ineffective as they were the plague doctors were trying their best! Unlike the quacks making money off 'alternate medicine'. I saw a figure being bandied about that suggested a 30 billion dollar industry around homeopathic and alternative quakery? could we broaden the scope of the thread to include general quacks? I'd like to talk about allodial silver, tiger blood, etc etc

Back to vaccines I found this map depressing as anything:

http://www.naturalnews.com/048803_petition_White_House_mandatory_vaccinations.html

So this seems to be something going down right now. A white house petition to prevent mandatory vaccinations. Supposedly, the white house has been freezing the vote counter so that is doesn't pass. I really don't get the point of that, they could and should just respond "LOL NO". Anyway, not like the petitions matter, but here's one actually worth signing.

There have got to be a bunch of quack cows worth discussing. It's a huge thing, even my parents are involved, sadly :(
Eta: some of the beliefs are pretty lulzy too. Magnets ya'll

The whole alternative medicine quackery thing makes me sad. You see more and more victims of it these days. A notable victim/peddler of woo is The Wellness Warrior, who passed away last month after spending 7 years advertising some of the most bullshit woo cancer 'cures' imaginable. Her mother developed breast cancer and tried the same methods and died a year before the Wellness Warrior herself.
