Anyone else sees Nintendo as predatory? - And other large game companies as well

I do. Super Mario should stay the fuck away from children.

I don't see them as predatory as much as I see them as being incredibly Japanese boomers with their executive decisions. They just act as if America was Japan and don't really care much about the response as long as it doesn't influence sales.

Whenever they do try to cater specifically to America it comes out really awkward in that unique way that only big Japanese businesses can pull off. Check out the powerpoints posted in the Capcom leaks thread and how out of touch they are and know that there's at least some level of similar fuckery going on at Nintendo as evidenced by some of the memos and diagrams in the last couple batches of leaks (most notably the stuff regarding Wii Fit Plus in the last batch discussing the presentation of the trainers).

Nintendo betrayed their own customer-friendly PR when they started C&Ding ROM sites - stifling many nostalgic franchises that would have perpetuated interest in Nintendo's newer titles is the biggest corporation-level case of shooting-yourself-in-the-foot I have ever seen. These communities were fucking harmless, even beneficial to Nintendo with their whole "let's just reboot the same franchises in every generation haha we are so cute" shtick. But no. Japanese exceptionalism means if they can't make a profit on obscure nostalgia titles, they'll bloody well stop anyone having fun with them.
LOL "betray", fag it's just business and always have been. Nintendo just like any other company doesn't gives a rat ass about you, they just sell their thing and will do whatever they can to milk their customers as much as possible and avoid others from using their products to potentially make a quick buck. They went after rom sites because people were downloading a rom, barely change a thing and putting them into their own "homebrew" shit and selling it, does bootlegs sound familiar at all?.
It's not Japanese companies doing this, it's any company in the planet, are you going to casually ignore the one Murican company most famous for doing exactly this?, *laughs in Disney*

As for the whole meele thing going on. Nintendo did contacted them and asked them to not use Slippi for their tournament, they refused and they got the hammer. To me both are being cry babies so I will just point and laugh at the manchilds.

Nintendo really pissed me off with the pricing on switch Pokemon games. I'm not paying $100+ to get the "full experience" of a Pokedex of upscaled fucking 3ds sprites (which they fucking lied about). Considering I haven't been really engaged by a Pokemon game since the Gameboy advanced there's just no way.

Has anything good even came out since Mario?

Whenever i hear the word "betrayal" or "betrayed" i cringe hard.

gaming companies don't give a shit about you. They want your money and Nintendo still gets loads of it.

As long as that is the case, Nintendo will keep going, because that's what a business is doing.

lol you both can't read, I said they betrayed themselves, because "Japanese boomers" describes their mentality pretty well. IDGAF about the whole Slippi affair, Meleefags are fucking obnoxious and they deserved it as far as I'm concerned.

Really? ""Betrayed their customer-friendly PR"? "Stifling many nostalgic franchises that would have perpetuated interest in Nintendo's newer titles"? I get that it sucks that it would be harder to download ROMs to play the classics for free via emulation instead of paying absurd prices (though it's still easily available anyway, what's on the Internet, stays there) or via shitty Online service which you're likely can't even find the classic game you want, but how is Nintendo sending C&D to ROM sites betraying themselves? If I were to play say Balloon Fight for the NES and that's it and if I were to either download a ROM for free via emulation or pay a dumb fee for Nintendo Switch Online of course I'd pick the former option, and I bet any of you would do the same, which is why it's not surprising why Nintendo would take action.

If you want to argue about the case regarding emulation and old games, at least make a case about archival or preservation which is how and why we can get to keep old games alive, not sperging about how Nintendo betrayed themselves how they're not customer-friendly all because you can still play classic games for free elsewhere can't download Donkey Kong Jr. Math online. Besides, even way before the emulation stuff there's Famiclone bootlegs and (big surprise!) Nintendo took action about it so do you expect them to change?

I bought an used Switch whose L joycon button broke a couple of days after I bought it. The Switch itself, while used, looks almost like new. I think it might be at most, 2 years old, probably less.

I have never held a Nintendo console that felt so frail. It feels like a Chinese ripoff. The joycons aren't secured in handheld. You can wiggle them around.

And they want you to pay $40 for each joycon, down from $50.

Shamefur dispray.

I find it hard to rag on Nintendo the same way I would with, say, Disney or Amazon because Nintendo have carved out their own little niche within the gaming industry. Ever since the Gamecube third-party support for their consoles has been utterly abysmal, so if you buy a Nintendo console you're more or less buying into a cottage industry of Nintendo's own franchises like Mario and Zelda that's isolated from the rest of the gaming industry. They aren't trying to take over the world, they're basically sat in the corner doing their own thing and I kind of respect them for that.

Fair point, I felt I worded that a bit strangely. Yes, archiving the stuff is the better point here, but I do want to raise the point that no bootleg or rip would have seriously challenged Nintendo's position in each generation's sales, since they don't seem to have much care about anything that didn't sell well in previous generations (the stuff that did winds their way back onto Online, rather belatedly in many cases). Let the little autists have their playground, I say.

You know what I looked up that "physical" edition of Shadow Dragon 30th anniversary.

The cart it comes with is entirely non-functional/decorative and everything else is some physical item, you only get a digital game code for the actual game and there's no playable Shadow Dragon cart in the box at all.

I bought the DS version for like 4 dollars complete.

Mine don't wiggle, you just have a busted Switch.

Speaking of which, my Switch's fan is dead (total bullshit, I leave it in docked mode all day long and it still breaks) and I don't trust myself to fix it so I will have to take that to a shop after I am out of quarantine.

Nintendo is the reason video game rentals weren't a thing in Japan. Them and some other companies lobbied to make it illegal if you didn't have permission from the copyright holders. If Disney could have done that with movie rentals, they would.

Nintendo tried getting rid of game rentals in the US. Thankfully, they failed.

Nintendo being shitty and predatory is an incredibly common sentiment wtf are you on about. Its so common and prevalent the reason you havent seen a thread about it is probably because its the video game equivalent of a common sense saying like "food is good".

Nintendo is predatory because they don't want people raising awareness of emulator programs? Not on my life.

The only predatory thing Nintendo has done recently was Mario Kart Tour and we all know well enough to stay away from that piece of shit.
People are getting riled up recently because since corona theyve done some kinda obviously-kinda-bad-look moves, theyve started releasing "limited release" games and shit, with Mario 3d All Stars and I think another one, I was looking through eshop news and I think theyre "for the first time EVER(!!!! forget every other remake weve made of this game, every time weve released it in other forms) releasing the Original Fire Emblem". I dont even think its special, I think its something they could have put on the Online service NES emulator thing, I think its literally just an NES port, but theyre charging like 20 bucks for it.

Also people have always been worked up about them going after fan projects which, while I can kinda see them hating emulators, I have to agree is just unnecessary and stirring shit up just to stir shit up.

They also were first demonized because they were some of the first who wanted to go after Lets Players, I believe, when that was going on, and while they didnt win that fight, in the end nothing changed.

People still like their shit because I guess people are sheep and consoomers (me too I guess, the Switch is the only modern console I own, and I really did love it for Breath of the Wild. Some decent memories and times there) and because "its Nintendo". It does stand alone by having its own exclusive IPs that dont get ported elsewhere any other time, so I kinda see why theyre defensive about emulators and shit. It has a unique feeling library even if its kind of kiddie.
