Anyone ever get feelings of Depersonalization?

I experienced something similar when I was a kid but it also involves having these weird sensations of the room expanding.

Seems to happen whenever I get a fever.
Pink Floyd talks about this.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am
Huh. I always remembered it as "who I am".

There are references to this sensation in Lewis Carroll as well. Acid users have reported it and I think Jefferson Airplane referenced that phenomenon by way of a quote from "Alice".
I think there might be a specific name for it but that escapes me.

Hey was the ride at Busch Gardens?
Yeah, just looked it up and it was the "Curse of Darkastle."

Maybe one of these, or lilliputian?
Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AiWS), also known as Todd's syndrome or dysmetropsia, is a disorienting neuropsychological condition that affects perception. People may experience distortions in visual perception such as micropsia (objects appearing small), macropsia (objects appearing large), pelopsia(objects appearing to be closer than they are), or teleopsia (objects appearing to be further away than they are). Size distortion may occur in other sensory modalities as well.

Yeah that's not an uncommon feeling with those rides. The cars having their own movement, the 3d effects(many 3d projected effects can have an effect on your perception and feeling of balance depending on how they're implemented) a common glass-less 3d effect is when you have a screen built in a special way that simulates a moving 3d magic eye puzzle so when you look at it it's like looking at a image when you're already crosseyed which gives you a weird sensation because your eyes are not crossed themselves. A company called Alioscopy made screens like that. The same method of making the dithered screens can be applied to regular 3d glasses

Curse of Darkastle. would be considered a 4d ride since it takes over sight, movement, smell, and sound for the occupant. It also was a dark ride and dark rides employ strobe effects regularly(some are more well hidden than others). but between the fast pace change of all the sensations in the ride it will leave your brain in a state where you will feel mentally sluggish because you were overstimulated for a brief period of time that you're generally unused to.

Most people are used to Disney's rides which ironed out the hangover effects from these rides. Their 4D rides like Soarin' are going to be slower paced so the sense of speed doesn't overwhelm people and it's not going to change pace at a breakneck speed. Disney also has their dark rides be lit better so you're not going from total darkness to light in such a contrast, you're always going to have some form of dim light. They succeed in not making the occupant feel entirely disconnected from these types of rides and they spend a ton of money on R&D. So lesser parks who don't have the pockets of disney really can't replicate the smooth operation of many of the same types of rides.

Awesome post, very informative. Had no idea this was a common thing with these rides, as I've never seen or heard it mentioned elsewhere.

Is it frightening for you when it happens? It can be a symptom of anxiety, panic attacks especially.

I used to have them, it was probably tied to anxiety, stress, bad stuff and panic attacks. Things built up to the point where I probably detached from myself. It no longer happens but I don't fear panic attacks either, they really don't bother me that much anymore.

The depersonlization/derealization didn't frighten me. For those not fully aware of what this is like I can describe it as everything suddenly being much sharper and in focus, normally we look past so many things because we already know that they are there and we see only what we look at. With "sharper" I mean it is a bit like the bump from old tv's to HDTV, like watching the news you notice that women have more facial hair than men because men shave. It's just peach fuzz, but in close ups it catches the light. This is not noticeable on an old TV and you won't think about it in real life, but with bright studio lights, a close up and at 1080p it is hard to not see it.

It's like that, you see everything at once and it is more real than reality, but it's not just your vision, that was just an example of something that many might have noticed themselves. It actually applies to everything at once, hearing as well as taste, feel and smell. You also think about your inner thoughts and motivations from an outside perspective with no internal bias that justifies/rationalizes habits or actions, same with your life itself, it can be examined in a different way.

It is absolutely fascinating and I sort of miss it. One thing I used to do was rush to the mirror and look at myself through the eyes of a stranger, that really helped my self image and confidence, seeing what I actually looked like for myself. A bit of a power level here, but I used to have an eating disorder and this was hugely helpful in seeing that nope, we're doing pretty well body wise and we should probably gain some weight.

And get a new haircut.

It feels like being in a dream I can't wake from. I know I'm there talking to someone but at the same time I'm not.

Not really anxiety but frustration I can't get back into my body.

Ego loss and death correlates to your frame of mind being altered. I noticed that weed and LSD shattered the ego once you go fully beyond "the gate". Suddenly your memories begin to merge with the present and it leaves you questioning the purpose of social constructs and existence. Thus you become aware of the absurdity of life and nothing makes sense anymore.

Just wait until you breakthrough on DMT and hang out with machine elves in the pleroma of the gods.

You can replicate this feeling at will by standing in front of a mirror in a dimly lit room staring at your eyes close up. You will disassociate from the reflection and it will be a stranger staring back at you. Try it, fun and sends shivers down my spine every time.

Do you have to chant "Bloody Mary" while you do it?
