Went back to the Gundam store again today
Go back and look for some "sanding blocks" if a glass file is out of your budget ATM, I was able too get a multipack of "Godhand" branded from my local.

Included were a 2000-10000 grit set of sanding blocks, at 2000 intervals (10,000 being the softest) if you wanted to be even more ghetto, head too your hardware store and buy some sandpaper there. Aim for some 1200+ if you are doing that

@MS-09 DOM Thanks for the advice, I’ll pick some up when I’m in Tokyo. The guy at the counter was pretty clear in saying that the store only allows one visit per day and I don’t exactly blend in.

@Almighty Space Duck You keep getting High Grades, and while I do love them quite a bit, there's far higher peaks you can climb. When you're done with HGs, if you don't feel fully satisfied, get yourself a Master Grade or Real Grade (of whatever looks coolest, because that is literally all that matters when you're building models). Then, when you've started down the Master Grade/Real Grade route and decide you want to try something even more complex. try a Perfect Grade. I just built the Perfect Grade Unleashed RX 78-2, and it was by far the most fun I've had building a model kit so far.

The thing with MGs and RGs is that, provided you're someone that actually has a job and just does this shit for fun in your few hours of recreation you have in between working and sleeping, you're looking at a multiple day project. A PG, though, that's over a week in that circumstance, possibly more or less depending on how much your work/life balance shifts.

At the end of the day, though, if you never touch a MG, RG, or PG, as long as you're having fun, that's a win. Enjoy the experience, bro. I'm always happy to see someone experiencing the joy of Gunpla.

@LobsterBoy669 Thanks for pointing out the grade stuff, it’s good food for thought. I hadn’t intentionally gone for all HG, just what looked cool and the biggest factor- space. I still have to get these things back.
For the time, I would be amazed if I get all these built by Christmas what with work and other commitments. I’ll definitely enjoy it more, and will be a better use of my free time than scrolling YouTube.
Another question, I can only presume there’s a thriving scene for 3D printing those little display/posing stands? Are those fixtures a standardised fit or is each bespoke to a series/model?

So, to answer the second part of your question first: certain models (particularly models that objectively require an Action Base, like those that have wings or don't have legs) come with an Action Base, or at the very least a display base. Certain Action Bases only fit certain types of models, but there's a wide swath for each. For example: the Action Base 2 can fit a wide variety of HG or RG models, but it won't work for MG models. Meanwhile, either Action Base 4 or 5 will work for MGs, or it'll work if you want to display two normal sized HGs fighting.

To answer the first part of your question: I have no idea if there's a thriving scene or not, but I have for sure 3D printed some Action Bases for my few HG models. Just take a look-see on the Internet and you'll likely find what you're looking for. Here's one I've personally printed that was amazing for my HG models: https://makerworld.com/en/models/696728-gunpla-action-stand?from=search#profileId-625686

Lots of questions, so I'll chime in:

There's really no such thing as a "bad" choice for a kit, though I would say there are worse options. A full history would take too long, so the abridged version: Bandai's older kits (pre-2000 or so) are typically not so great, nearly always requiring glue for assembly and paint to look even remotely accurate, and with questionable proportions and posability. Their more modern lines, like High Grade, Master Grade, and Perfect Grade (with Real Grade coming later), are much better in comparison, giving you a color-accurate model that just snap-fits together. Typically, the newer the kit, the better the tech behind it will be, but you typically can't go wrong as long as you see one of those acronyms on the box somewhere (HG, MG, PG, RG).

As an example, here's what the Guncannon you bought looks like out of the box, compared to its later High Grade versions (original on the left, first HG in the middle, updated HG on the right):

But hey, you did say you bought it for painting practice, so you'll definitely be getting your money's worth there.

The most important thing is whether the mobile suit in question looks interesting to you. It doesn't matter if the build experience is amazing if you're left with a kit you don't really want to look at on your shelf (and honestly, most kits are going to feel about the same to build, even among different grades). For ideas of what to keep an eye out for, the best resource is Dalong's website, who has spent over twenty years building and documenting literally thousands of gunpla. He may not have reviews up of the absolute latest kits (GQuuuuuuX kits have only just started coming out, for instance), but he has more than enough to get started. Scroll through his listings and see what catches your eye; it'll also give you an idea of what to expect from some of the kits you've already bought.

Also, when you get home, look into picking up an Entry Grade to practice on. They're simple and cheap kits that don't even require tools to remove parts from the runners, and they're great for practicing painting and detailing.

And I'm pretty sure you can find files for 3D printing stands somewhere, though I haven't really looked into them. Most modern kits will have some kind of hole that an Action Base will have some kind of an adapter for, and those that don't can be attached some other way. Some even come with their own adapters and simply require you to provide the base. I also know you can pick up third-party bases that are usually cheaper, though I can't attest to their quality.

At any rate, hope you enjoy your builds!

Good news! I have learned of the dark art of halving the footprint of an unassembled Gunpla kit. With this and the duffle bag I just picked up that barely squeaks under the carry on size limit I think I will have room to bring a PG kit back with me. The question now is… which one? Of course it needs to look cool as fuck and not be a PG version of something I already bought. Cost is whatever, it’s holiday money so it might as well not be real, it’d be a different story if I was making for it in my own currency. Any suggestions? I got 14 days before I hit Tokyo so that’s plenty time.

ETA
Picked up a bunch of tools and things based on recommendations/stuff I’ve seen in the thread. The only stuff I am short on is cement/paint stuff/anything else I can’t take on the plane.

If you were there sometime later this year or maybe next year, I'd probably say the upcoming PGU Nu Gundam would be a good option, since it's an iconic Gundam being given the Perfect Grade Unleashed treatment (a sub-line with even more detail than a standard PG). But alas, you aren't (and also I expect that kit may be hard to track down when it does release).

The good news is that there is zero overlap between the entire PG line and the kits you already bought, so any choice would be something new. The bad news is that that does mean you have a decent amount of options, though not a huge number (the main line only has about twenty kits in it). As always, I recommend looking at Dalong's reviews and seeing what grabs your attention, although I will note that some of those early kits are over twenty years old so they may be a little quirky. Personal standouts for me would be the Astray Red Frame, any Unicorn variant, or the PGU RX-78-2. I dunno if you can find a PG Unicorn Perfectibility in stores there since it's a P-Bandai kit, but that would definitely be a standout if you could track it down from a reseller. If not, don't stress too hard, it pops up on US P-Bandai on a somewhat regular basis.

Sorry to bring my personal hang ups into the thread but anyone else just feel completely burned out by Gundam in general? I haven't had the drive to work on a kit in months and my backlog is massive. I wasn't a fan of G-Witch, have always hated SEED, and Gcucks looks so goddamn awful mechanical design and character design wise I have no interest in watching it. This combined with the netflix slop of Requiem for Vengeance and the live action film that will undoubtedly be shit; I have little hope for this franchise and all that I think is just destroying my will to consume this plastic crack. Which is a shame because I used to love this hobby, I WANT to love it, but everything being made today under the Gundam brand disgusts me and I think that's killed my drive. At least Bandai will still reprint older kits from entries in the franchise that I like/were actually good.

The Gundam stories have been tarnished by stupid anime tropes since 1985 and possibly earlier, so G-Cucks leaning into the worst anime tropes (lolicon, yuri, school setting, tournaments) is the chickens coming home to roost.
There are lots of issues with Gundam designs objectively. Many of the OYW Zeon robots are crappy throwaways, and almost every design afterward has had the quality of a OYW Zeon design since they were either made by otaku who want everything to look le heccin realistic and matoor (when you're designing sci-fi you're already unrealistic, so that's just an excuse for having zero creativity and being lazy), or they're just recoloured Gundams. Most mobile suits cobble parts onto basic humanoids with no regard, and transforming mobile suits can never come up with alt modes that look like good spaceships. SEED designs are objectively the best in terms of colours and features, but they're almost all Gundams, so once you've built one you've built them all. This extends to Gunpla in general since they all have the same basic humanoid template, so any differences are miniscule engineering nonsense or what's tantamount to different armours. Sentai, Transformers, Machine Robo, and certain Lego robots are so much better than anime robots because they're meant to capture children's imaginations and not sit on the shelves of retard weebs.

I love Gundam, but sometimes i need to take a break and watch/engage with other things like Braves, Super robots etc. Gundam is cool and all but sometimes i just wanna see Might Gaine "Tate-Ichimonji-Giri" people and not have to worry about Banagher and his "Sore demo" or Kira being a faggot.

I begrudgingly agree with you on it being tarnished by stupid tropes since as far back as Zeta but c'mon Zeon's OYW suits have a charm to them. The designs peaked in Zeta/ZZ/CCA with emerging styles from various designers. On the other hand the features of SEED's are almost completely lifted from other Gundams and suits from other series, just one of the glaring flaws I could sperg about all day. I might just be one of those retarded weebs but I will buy something if it looks cool, nothing from Gundam recently has looked cool to me.

Still kicking myself for not buying RG GaoGaiGar and Goldymarg when he was up on PB. I really should've bought one of those Scopedog kits they recently put out too since I fucking love Votoms. Warms my jaded heart to see other kiwis agree banana and kira are insufferable faggot characters.

I think a lot of people are just jaded and miserable now so people will probably agree with you about being burned out. It's okay to not like things, but I think more people should attempt to find stuff they like within those shows, moves, etc. that they don't. I was disappointed with the overall story of GWitch but there was still a lot of charm and some great mobile suit designs in it. Frankly I like seeing Gundam do new things even if I don't personally care for them. GQuuuuuuX is an utterly retarded name and I think it's design is stupid personally, but I'm sure there's something fun or interesting to be found in the show. I dunno man, I'm sick of fags whining and shitting on every little thing nowadays. Giant robots are fuckin cool and they're not gunna stop being cool just because Gundam makes a few shows to appeal to new audiences that some vocal autists will piss and moan about.

I just came back from a franchise break. Didn't care for the second half of IBO and Witch from Mercury couldn't be farther from my personal taste. There is really nothing stopping you from only engaging with the shit you like. I hate the Gundam Aerial because of the tumor on its head and bigass legs, but I love the Calibarn and Lfrith. It's not like you have to accept everything because it's part of the franchise. I believe that MSG: Unicorn is terrible. I still love the Jesta, Kshatriya, Sinanju, Unicorn/Banshee etc. I think you're way better off just watching older shit you actually like and buying kits of designs you think are cool instead of torturing yourself over loving a franchise owned by a multi-billion dollar company concerned with making money above all else. You're under no obligation to like anything.

but c'mon Zeon's OYW suits have a charm to them.
Most OYW designs that aren't the Gundam are decentish. The issue with Zeon designs is not enough variance and dull colours. The dull colours are also a big issue with the Scopedogs and the Dougram robots. The only real robot designs that are objectively good are selected ones from Vifam, Dragonar, and SEED Destiny/Freedom (original SEED has no good designs except Duel, Buster, and Bucue). SEED's designs being unoriginal isn't an issue since they tend to be as good as what they ripped off and they have lots of pretty colours. The reason the Z/ZZ/CCA designs have issues is because they're very unoriginal. They're parts cobbled together from other mobile suits and anime robots (or just slight remakes of them) with little rhyme or reason or any attempt to look fantastical and imaginative, which comes across as lazy, rushed, and self-indulgent.

Almost all media has some redeeming qualities. Mission Earth has some very cool action scenes and ideas that blow most anime stuff out of the water. G-Cucks is doing nothing new and you shouldn't tolerate it for le heckin' alt 0079 or whatever, especially since it's lolipedo garbage (the character designer did loli Pokemon trainers and the Monogatari harem characters, I think). There's nothing wrong with having high standards and refusing to tolerate a show for yuricuck moefags.

I have no idea how I’m going to get this thing home. 18k yen/130(ish) USD. Seemed like a good price?
Considering it goes for about $200 over here, yeah, I think it's a good deal. But you did say you had room, so uh...time to get creative? You didn't really need to take all your clothes back home with you, right?
