I think it's a panel of physicians who decide whether someone is fit for assisted suicide. Not exclusively psychiatrists, afaik. I think it's problematic to allow assisted suicide for non-terminal, treatable conditions like mental illnesses but I don't think that's the biggest thing ailing our country mental healthcare system.
The biggest problem is public psychotherapists are terrible. You pay for good therapy, same as anywhere. No problem with our psychiatrists though, I'd say they're up to the standard of any modern country. None of this is an excuse to not take your meds, sir.
There's also a convoluted and efficient system for accessing therapy, even in places in self referral. Have fun with the waiting list and phone tag to try to get it.
