Instead their history will be erased, their culture will be replaced, their religion will be forgotten, their people will be scattered to the wind and replaced by foreign invaders. They'll be a gap between paragraphs in a history book.

And you know what's the funniest thing about it? Russia had nothing to do with it. You let America do it to you willingly.

Everyone's fucked, that's for sure. As for consenting to dealing with the Americans, well... When you make a deal with the devil and sell your soul, it's not entirely the devil's fault. Temptation is just like, his job. That's what he does. He offers things. Those things sound pretty great, but there's a price. At the end it's still up to people to accept it, or vote for people to accept it, etc. Not saying it's easy, or always possible, because the devil is pretty good at his job, but usually there's some other option, maybe not great but a little better.

Overall it's best not to make enemies right across your borders. And yes, Russia also fucked up in that regard and did not have much to offer the post-Soviet states, compared to the ample offerings of NATO. Still, at that point Russia was in no condition to offer much as it barely survived as a country after the collapse. The fact it did not turn into another Ukraine and managed to recover enough to give the US wet pants again is quite amazing. That's mainly the accomplishment of Putin and his buds, as corrupt as they may be.
