People forget just how much of a heel-turn Game Grumps was for Arin in and of itself. Let's Plays were not a favorable thing, they were broadly mocked at the time and the early Jon era saw Arin and Jon acknowledging that and justifying their own existence by being edgy and deprecating and doing mental gymnastics about not being a LP, but you can practically hear the moment it turned profitable and Arin started caring about optics. That, and the fact that he basically immediately stopped doing any animation was seen as a dead giveaway that this was a pivot away from the NG old guard of working artists and towards an easier paycheck/audience. It made it look like art and animation were only ever a means to relevance for him, rather than a labor of love like it clearly is/was for the Sleepycabin boys.

Which is ironic now that Oneyplays pays Chris's bills, but that's just how it was seen at the time.

From what I have heard, Arin would only animate when he needed a bump in the paycheck from YT or NG. At the time people just assumed it took a long time for him to animate, but those massive breaks in between his animations were just him lazing around on the YT checks until they went dry and he needed money again. Ironically, people not watching his animations were the major motivation for him to animate.

It really is no surprise he said fuck it when the LP money train came rolling in. Whereas Jon is someone who is an actual creative not too concerned with money beyond enough to survive and fulfill his passion projects. Its again no wonder he left to pursue his actual passions like the most of the NG old guard has done.

Arin was quite simply always a lazy ass who fell ass backwards into YT/NG animations by finding an easy paycheck that was better than anything else he could get. He will always chase the money and, as much as we rightfully shit on him, he indeed did find the cash cow.

Mind you, I think he is probably deeply unfulfilled and trapped in a meaningless life surrounded by people who don't really care about him (including his scammer alien looking wife) and are only interested in how much of his money they can grub for themselves. Its the same situation that H3H3 is in and its the place all money grubbing shitstains end up even if they fall ass backwards into "massive success". Because money doesn't fix your life, it just shows everyone who you really are.

To be fair, the only way we'll know about what's going on with Arin and Co is if they fuck up and it goes around, or if someone watches Game Grumps and I'm not watching that shit in 2024

I know someone who watches them, info is unreliable because they actually like them. But from what I caught from them when I see it on the TV nothing has changed since 2015. I think Danny released a album last month that’s about it.

I can remember Arin talking in a GG video that the animation career was difficult to make money when YT did one of their back end changes.

They have been doing this for like 10+ years. YT didn't allow videos over 10 mins at one point remember, or something about how their pay out worked? All those weird things. But there are videos where Arin talks about how those changes made animation videos on YT a complete waste of time.

He also made a lot of money then tried to do the type of thing people who had nothing who get something do and give money to friends via jobs and a giant office and free food and other things. But didn't have the for sight to maintain the cash flow or the power over YT to maintain the cash flow. As YT can kill your channel at any time.

I remember the evolution of the GG office being awesome, from Arins home, to a real commercial location, to a sort of Lets Play Studio with all the consoles and equipment setup with an awesome switcher and honestly a real nerd cave type build. To what they have now which I think is Arin and Dan on computer chairs playing on a TV on a box and some one sitting on the other side of the TV making sure the audio and capture don't die.

He does admit he fucked up a lot of things with his money, but not in big details, but we all can kind of get the idea.

I saw that they played some old Humongous Games a few months ago. Watched some of them, and they're actually not that bad. It's been a long time since I've seen any of their stuff though.
I'm glad they finally resorted to baby games to adjust things to Arin's skill level. I hope they do the Jumpstart series next.

There's way too much to read but does anyone know if that clip of Arin making fun of Let's Players been passed around?
All I can remember for sure is the tweet where he says "if I ever make a Let's Play, kill me".

I have to call bullshit on his idea that it's infeasible. I'm subbed to a few art channels that aren't quite mainstream but big enough to be pulling audiences anywhere from 2-10k a video, and you can bet plenty are chipping in donos here and there. Even just a decent fraction of those at a few bucks each can keep the average joe above water well enough; like it was pointed out earlier Jon is in it for the passion of the work and gets by fine.

'Egoraptor' isn't some random niche art channel nobody in the sphere has heard of, and a name alone can bring in plenty enough people willing to throw cash at you. I mean for fuck's sake the dude has (if I remember right) bitched about being sick of hearing people wishing he'd animate again, or that he had sold out, which I think is telling of the size of audience he would have retained if he weren't lazy and chasing the biggest/easiest bag.

You have to remember the context of the time he said those comments. Early on YouTube, animations reigned king, and they were only a few minutes. These videos could get monetised and they'd make bank. Then, around 2013 I believe, YouTube made it so a video had to be a minimum of 10 minutes in order for it to be monetised. It is absolutely unfeasable for any solo animator to pump out 10+ minute animations consistently enough to actually make money. This was before Patreon really took off, so a yeah it was a big concern at the time. Probably why storytime animators took over, which weren't really animations at all but glorified slideshows. Probably why Arin likes those guys so much, minimum effort with maximum output.

Yeah fair and I had originally typed up a disclaimer to that effect. That said, even back then he was probably one of the few who could have wound up somewhere with it like the crowd he hung with at the time.

Every friend I've had who moved to LA returned as a massive faggot. Every YouTuber who I've watched over the years who moved to LA turned into a massive faggot. If you think I'm wrong look at someone like IDubbbz, he got more famous, moved from where he was in California to a more central part of LA, and as soon as he started speaking to LA people what happened?

Nobody just magically becomes like IDubbbz did. Now replace everything I said with "EgoRaptor" and you get the exact same fucking story. I literally just blame LA
Aren't the Oneyplays crew, or if you want to go further back, Sleepycabin guys all in LA these days, or were for several years? They've all remained relatively the same and sane besides a couple of them that have always been spergs, or like Stamper who went full druggie. The worst of anyone slightly related to the group, Shadman, was always awful.

I think a lot of them are spergs, but they know to not be a sperg in public because it can impact their career. Even looking back you could tell they were all the weird kids growing up. I guess in the end it shows that Zach was the most capable of Sleepycabin because he's the only one that ended up actually managing to get a animated show on television.

I can't blame Arin for giving in to let's plays. A 30 second of well done animation takes like what, 15 hours or some shit? If I could just goof around with my friend and make money I would not bother doing animation.

My point being, they're all some level of weird but none of them ever let their powerlevel show any more than they did before California and the 'influencer' scene. Maybe it's just the people they surround themselves with there, but it's also a showing of a level of self control a lot of attention seeking people lack.

Pretty sure they don't live there anymore. Or at least I'm pretty sure Chris doesn't. I remember a tweet from him that said something like "LA is good for growth but you can't stay there too long or it ruins you".

I remember seeing it years ago on 4chan, well before the AI boom, so I know it wasn't faked. He was streaming while animating something and went on for a few minutes about Let's Players being retarded and gay. There wasn't a facecam. I wish I saved it.
