Recently there have been an increased traction in the art thread, which I'm really happy for, so i thought to create a kind of sub thread for specifically looking or asking for advice concerning anything art related.
And to kick things off i wanna talk to you about perspective. A long time ago me and @Sketchy Fingers had a conversation about it so i thought it would be a good topic to start off.
I'm telling you right away that I use terms that I just make up. "Official" names for them might be different, probably are.
I'm sure a lot of you are already familiar with the concept of "far thing small, close thing big", but maybe you might not know or just never really had a second tought on how these things work in detail.
First lets figure out how we as humans see things:
1777558781513.png1777560167704.pngHere is a rough diogram of the back of the human head and a profile. I did drew a pair of eyes where they should be in the front fo clarity sake.
a horisontal line that goes through the eyes is a Horizon Line.
Horizon Line is always on the eye level.
2 circles is field of view of our right and left eye. area where they are overlapping is what we usually see in focus and it is the area which we usually try to depict in the drawing.
1777559618312.png1777560015203.pngIf we look down Horizon Line travels up in our field of view.
1777559667374.png1777559956672.pngIf we look up Horizon Line travels down in our field of view.
Now that you have basic understanding of how field of view works we can start looking at types of perspectives.
Theres generally considered 3 types of perspectives that are used in traditional art:
  • 1 point perspective - also known as central perspective
  • 2 point perspective - angular perspective
  • 3 point perspective - upward or downward perspective
So lets start with the 1 point perspective. As the name suggest it utilizes 1 Vanishing Point. to demonstrate how it works lets draw a box.
Thats how the top down view looks like:
1777561198796.png
Line in the middle is our Projection Surfuce where lines that we draw will show up. Think of it as a paper that you are holding in front of you, or a lens in the camera.
1777561409285.png
As you can see right now the box is placed parallel to the Projection Surfuce.
To start we should draw a horizon line and pick a point on it to be a Vanishing Point. Now because we are drawing a square box draw a square anywhere on the paper. For demonstartion purposes i will do 3: below, on, and above the horizon line. Now connect each angle of the square to the Vanishing Point. And simply draw another square that will connect with each of these lines
1777561467635.png1777561641231.pngСнимок экрана 2026-04-30 180801.png1777561853609.png

Now if we repeat the process with the res we will get this result
1777562132337.png
heres some examples of drawings done in central perspetive:
1777556010099.png1777555690030.png1777554255085.png
Снимок экрана 2026-04-30 182359.png
Now our box is placed at an angle to the Projection Surfuce. that means we will have to add one more Vanishing Point.
We starting in a similar fassion but we have to pick 2 Vanishing Points. To start our box we shoud draw one of the edges of the box perpendicularly to our Horizon Line. Again i will draw 3.Connect each Vanishing Point to the top and bottom of the edge.Draw 2 more edges. And connect them in a similar fassion. the last edge will be the conection of the 2 intersection of the lines.
1777562977872.png1777563164911.pngСнимок экрана 2026-04-30 183317.png1777563372014.png1777563450950.png

Final result should be looking kinda like this
1777563799845.png
Here's the examples of some art that uses 2 point perspective.
1777563875386.png1777563895209.png1777563917146.png
Take a look at this photo:
1777564002328.png
as you can see the vertical lines arent parallel. That happens when you look up or down on an object, hence the name of the perspective downward/upward perspective. Vertical lines are also converge into a single that is also allinged to our eyes bu on the Y axis instead of X one.
To start we palce 2 Vanishing Point just like is 2 point pespective but then add 1 more Vanishing Point above or below the Horizon Line. Then draw a flat square similar to how you did the bottom of the box in the 2 point perspective.and connect them to your 3rd Vanishing Point. If you place the Vanishing Point below Horizon Line you will get the downwards perspective, and upwards perspective if you place it above.

And heres some examples

happy with the pose although maybe i should give her a bigger gun

alright todays progress

it got messier than i wanted but im betting on the fact that since it will be so small it wouldnt as notisable
leather coat turned out high contrast which i think as it should be
1777586112914.png1777586170240.png
but im not entierly happy with how jeans turned out
the texture is tricky to capture since they are black in w/b dawing
1777586284205.png1777586266259.png
I intended for a collar to be covered in these, not sure how they are called
I think it turned out pretty good.

  • 2 point perspective - angular perspective
  • 3 point perspective - upward or downward perspective
Small addendum on perspective because I often mull over in my head how I would explain these things to someone else:
while 3 point perspective is all you generally need to convey scenes accurately, there is an additional level which is considering the focal length.
Essentially if you place your vanishing points relatively far apart (often off the page or edge of the scene you're actually drawing) you will get a more 'natural' perspective look where objects shrink gradually. If you place your vanishing points very close together then you will get a more extreme distortion.
A lot of beginner artists do this and find it difficult to draw large backgrounds because of how much distortion there is. If you want to convey a scene plainly, start with vanishing points very distant from eachother.
Behold the effect of focal length:
cat focal length.gif
cat focal length.gif

It isn't wrong to use extreme distortion, though, just a bit trickier. The amount to which an object shrinks in the distance depends on the focal length of the lens viewing it, with short focal lengths and 'fisheye lens' being the most extreme. Not only does an object shrink as it goes into the distance, but it also curves slightly as the space behind it shrinks. This can occur with a regular lens with extremely large objects and is why tall buildings can seem to 'curve' to the naked eye.
At a long focal length this cat is relatively proportionate. At short focal length, his head looks much bigger than his body even though it's only a small distance away. Even though the image above is doable from a single point perspective, I expanded it below to multiple points to demonstrate how the horizontal vanishing points play into it:
1777592915840.png

A second common problem I thought about while writing this, is once you've decided on your level of distortion, failing to keep it at a consistent rate. When drawing something that's evenly spaced into the distance, the most consistent way is to draw a perspective grid, and make sure each tile gets smaller at a consistent rate. If you draw a cross through each tile, the centre points should line up like so:

1777593344306.png
I got this trick from an anime-focused YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=astq0QnLvGM&
These tips aren't necessary 90% of the time, but sometimes perspective can drive me insane when I don't know where I've gone wrong, and I find rules like this help to figure it out.

...fuck, explaining perspective is hard (:_(

Reminds me of Tactical Breach Wizards.

I know its pretty sloppy, but I tried that 3 point perspective, but im pretty sure I did it wrong, usually I just fumble around guessing without actually knowing how to use it, like i get idea, but im also extremely inconsistent with it and just make up shit, I think having photo would help, I rarely use reference and 95% of stuff i draw is just off memory.

Yeah i've been playing it
distortion
I've been playing with the fish eye effect for a while now, but i was mostly doing so by eyeballing it
i figured it would be something like that but i never really bothered to research the topic
this was my first attempt at doing distortion from almost a year ago:

3 point perspepective really only shows it self when you look at considarbale angel up or down, aka you horizon line is clsoer to the edge of the picture.
like here the horizon isnt even visible so the 3rd point so close to the center of the image it almost becomes central perspective
1777644557427.png
or this is a better example where you can see the horizon line
1777644633273.png
1777646575126.png
in you drawing the horizon line is pretty close to the center so the 3rd point is so far away that it really becomes 2 point perspective
the tool cabinet almost looks like its a central pespective, mostly because it stands parallel to the viewer, which is fine you mix pespective together, but different objects will need their own vanishing point since the stand in different dimensions(? not sure how to call it, my esl is showing)

Does any one know any tricks with helping with torso proportions? I can never seem to get the distance between the rib cage and pelvis, right.
when it comes to learn the body i often used one of those programs that give you a doll to play around like posemyart
Снимок экрана 2026-05-01 185746.png
generally rule of thumb that torso is 3 heads tall but it can change depending on the pose and angle

trying to figure out the pose for the knight that doesn't cover the witch so much but i am struggling a bit
im sure ill come up with something
also now looking at it the elbow plate doesn't look right

I think plate is accurate, has for witch, I wonder if you make that boot a darker value, might work, Im just spit balling idea, but I think even if you didn't it wouldn't be that bad, maybe a white line like how they do in comics and manga.

Agreed, I'd do some white hatching around the boot into the witch so that the boot pops forward.

Your work is very detailed. Do you use premade textures to help speed up the process or do you do it longways?
youmean the highlight around the chrarcters?
also nah, im complete retard when it comes to using krita so all of my digital shit almost exclusevely done with fineliner brush (2, 3, 4 pixels thick in this case)

I took art classes and I still can't use perspectives well. I struggle to embed human figures inside environments with perspective. I tried individual perspective distortion on human figures with dynamic posing. Any tips?

try to practice to draw people as boxes first
drawing "hitboxes" around them help a lot too avoid characters floating in the scenery

kinda want to talk about shading
or at least how i do that, first how i do metal
heres i have a helmet
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 171322.png
i already mapped out the initial spots where it will be pitch balck
as you can see they folow a vertical line (well here its more like horizontal since the image is tilted)
but since the helmet is round it looks kinda off so i tried to tilt them a bit to folow the curvature of the helmet
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 172048.png
some lines got merged on the part of the visor but since the part that show the thickness of the visor plate will be lighter it will show more depth to the image
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 172255.png
now i do the light hatching on these parts
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 172525.png
now i do the hatching folowing horizontal curvature of the helmet
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 173731.png
since helmet is layered some parts of the helmet: visor and 2 rings on top will be in lighter color than the lower base of the helmet. i do that by adding different angle of the hatching closly to 45 degrees in both dirrections
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 174306.png
to show the levels of the helmet heres colored drawing that shows different levels of the helm
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 174314.png
red parts are that are on top, blue are on the bottom and gree is the connecting part
and i started to work on the skirt bapping out the darker parts of it
Снимок экрана 2026-05-02 181555.png
i already done the 1st pouch and part of the belt so you can see how it kinda will look
i do not recomend do this kinda mapping in big patches since you can easly forget what parts should be dark and whci should be light
ironically i did exactly that
today i dont have as much time so i did less then i wanted

So like I said in art thread I am trying to just draw from reference because I noticed all my drawing from memory are pretty bad when it comes to structure so this 2nd one of month, feel free to share things you noticed, I will try to fix it when I get more time, I wanted to make sure line work was good before I try inking it.

could use any advice/tips regarding faces.
i always struggle with them, especially to make them appealing and to get likeness

View attachment 8951573
im not an expert on faces and female faces is hard to draw but ill try
the female face is in general way more softer then a male one but have a lot of sharp features, and i will focus on attractive faces since ugly once are basically inversion of the same rules.
first that the side jaw can be more squareish but the chin should be sharp
1777838893947.png
the cheeks are improtant thing to focus on
the higher they are the younger the person will look
1777839091602.png
and the obvious ones - lips nose and eyes
1777839252736.png
lips are very pronounsed you can see the outline of them pretty much every time
i dont recomend to draw noses all the way, draw wings and the tip but ignore the ridge in the front shot
and in eyes it mostly the eyebrows and eyelashes, eyebrows thinn and sharp, eyelashes are long but also you shouldn't forget the bottom lashes on the eye
and theres also make up but that state by state case
maybe someone else can add their share
i am not confident on the topic

looks great man it looks way more realistic than your usual one but i do recomend to draw from life first and then apply your style later. Mostly cause when you draw from reference you learn how things look in way more detail than you mightve thought initially
