Talked to a Romanian buddy recently, dude basically thinks the people who "couped" the dictator were traitors, that it happened just after he had payed off the debt and that it was foreign instigated. Despite travelling the world and being a capitalist the guy sympathizes with the oldschool commies and calls the current leadership a bunch of crooks.

Polls seem to suggest he's not alone: https://www.elmundo.es/internacional/2014/04/10/5346de4d268e3e8f598b458c.html
Considering Romania had one of the most authoritarian communist systems, where do you place yourself in all of this?

Headline (We lived better with communism': 66% of Romanians would vote for dictator Ceausescu)

That "article" comes from some polls that were taken in the early 2010 period, after the financial crisis.
This is actually a very interesting discussion, as I have encountered these polls and articles very often, specifically when dealing with Western tankies online, who were always hardcore about how Romania sucks now that you can find meat in stores and there's no need to stay in a queue for milk at 5AM in the winter.
I know, I know.
Now, I have a nuanced view on things, as it's probably normal for a non-schizo actual Romanian, but it's probably too much effort for a shitposting forum.
The TL;DR would be that the communist era was more "stable", predictable, and comfortable for somebody that grew with it - if you worked, you were relatively safe, everything was "under control". Food was shit. You could die in a hospital because of lack of essential medicines. You could've been arrested and tortured for a joke. But inequality was way more under control (i.e. only the party higher ups were "rich", and you could not get very rich visibly, which is good for social stability). You could buy a car and an apartment from a medic job, in a few years, even without bribes. Nowadays that would be impossible without some serious bank loans.
Much to say. Much to learn from that era. But to want it to return is foolishness. Most people that want that would not survive under those harsh conditions.
As for crooked leadership, crooks back then, crooks now. Ceausescu had reasons to pay the debt, and it starved the population for it. Regardless, the shock therapy market liberalism that followed was just as horrific.

Not sure it's a thing anymore. Fruit picking and washing dirty dishes at some restaurant for more money than a trained engineer in Romania or something, but that was like 10-15 yrs ago

How did you manage to topple and shoot your commie dictator when he was being too much of a dick?

It's for, uh, a friend. For merely academic purposes, of course.
I could (probably should have) write a whole book about this.
Basically, one of the last acts of actual revolt, undomesticated Europeans and self-sacrifice inside the continent. People literally faced the Army with bare hands and got butchered. Only a few days later as chaos set in and "terrorists" appeared people got armed with whatever they found, but first days they were literally just being so fed up that you accepted the possibility of death.
I think it was a genuine revolution at first but the "opposition" elites took over it really fast, by the time a week passed they were already planning a new government.
Shooting Ceausescu was completely idiotic and likely done so state secrets would not transpire in trial which would've been very publicized. With his death, all his foreign accounts where he stashed what he pillaged from us were lost. Most of his reasons remain secret. Barely anything from inside the regime reached the public, and what did is of somewhat questionable accuracy, like Pacepa's Red Horizons:
As for the academic purposes, umm, I just don't think modern populations have what it takes. No hunger. Obesity and sedentarism. Highly medicated and sedated. Victims of 15 years+ of constant Internet propaganda, split in dozens of tiny ideological tribes, filled with ethnic infighting and riddled with distrust and paranoia (everyone is a fed).
Here's something to do.
Google images from the Romanian revolution. Images from the Israel bombings now. Look at the Arabs and look at the Romanians. What do they have in common?
- almost all are young men, many children, almost none are obese, all raised in harsh climate
Now google images from the "far right" counterprotest in the UK where Tommy Robinson brought his ultras to fight the dindus.
Beer bellies, fat slobs almost everywhere. No courage to go against the police or the state in full. Just drunken little shits looking to let some steam loose.
It will get worse and worse, as modern medicine means that people will get older in average, which is yet another factor that will crush any potential revolutionary fervor.

Tell us the racist stereotypes Romanians have for Romanians living in other parts of Romania.
Well there's little racism just ethnic stuff. People in the poorest part of the country, Moldova, are considered gruggs and lower quality by those in the West. The southerners are also kinda "discriminated" against (in speech and shitposts, cause in RL nobody knows what sort of flavor of mongrel you are unless you insist in telling them). The capital city folks look down on everyone else, but also on each other. Every group calls others gypsies. The most liberal city is called Cluj, is very expensive to live in compared to the rest of the country, and its inhabitants are often some flavor of shitlib. The Hungarian enclave in the middle of the country hates everyone else and is hated by everyone else too, but in a chill way🥰
The gypsies also hate everyone else and are hated by everyone else. And they are doing an amazing job at acting like stereotypes 90% of the time.
Luckily there's enough mixing now that most of these petty rivalries are kinda things of the past, minus the gyppo shit which occasionally still results in actual violence and even lynching attempts. Displacement of Roma is also a thing as life gets too dangerous for them if one commits a serious crime against ethnic Romanians.
But in general everyone thinks the rest are retards, his city is the best, and everyone else but his small tribal ingroup are gypsies.
