Culture Assassin's Creed Shadows Is Already Being Called "Woke" And "Disrespectful" - Assassin's Creed Shadows' two protagonists are getting the abuse we all sadly expected.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is already being labeled as "woke" and "disrespectful" following its announcement trailer, primarily due to main characters Naoe and Yasuke, the latter of whom is historically considered Japan's first black samurai.

Ubisoft has finally lifted the lid on the next mainline Assassin's Creed, revealing that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on November 15 later this year. While we didn't get any gameplay, we did get a lengthy cinematic trailer going into the backstories of the game's two main protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. Naoe appears to be a Shinboi from the Japanese provinces, while Yasuke is considered to be Japan's first black samurai, and came into contact with several prominent figures in Japanese history.

That means Assassin's Creed Shadows will center around a woman and a black man, and some people on social media have reacted with exactly the kind of behavior we have come to expect nowadays whenever a protagonist isn't a straight white man. In the replies of Ubisoft's announcement tweet, you don't have to look very hard for people decrying the game as "woke" and "disrespectful", with a sprinkling of DEI in there for good measure.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' Yasuke Is Somehow "Disrespectful" To Japan

Most of the vitriol revolves around Yasuke, with some people taking issue with the fact that they're being made to play as a black man in a Feudal Japan setting, despite the character being a key figure in Japanese history. Some claim that it's inappropriate for Ubisoft to have someone who isn't native to the country as one of the main characters, though I don't think these same people take issue with the fact that the incredibly Welsh Edward Kenway was sailing around the Carribean in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

You've also got some stating that Yasuke wasn't actually a samurai, but was a retainer to Oda Nobunaga, and that this somehow "disrespects" Japanese culture. However, people are already pointing out Yasuke was Nobunaga's Kosho, which is essentially the bodyguard or personal servant of a general or lord and is considered a samurai in Japanese history. Just because Yasuke didn't belong to a Samurai clan, it doesn't mean he wasn't one.

I enjoy how every time one of these historical dramas come out, everyone suddenly becomes a scholar of the period in question. HE WASN'T A SAMURAI OMG A SAMURAI IS *THIS* AND HE WAS *THAT* like okay fine but I'm not seeing any indication that the character is supposed to be a samurai unless wearing samurai armor is the only prereq? Idk I don't actually know anything about feudal Japan.

Reminds me of when The Woman King came out and everyone was pretending like they had heard of the Kingdom of Dahomey before and getting mad that a big budget Hollywood movie was taking liberties with the historical record, something that had apparently never ever happened before.

But anyway yeah sure fine while Assassin's Creed has never been a historically accurate series it's still pretty obvious that out of the thousands of actual samurai/samurai adjacent figures that existed throughout Jap history they picked the one guy who wasn't Japanese to base their protag on.

Guy should have been a ninja anyway, I can't imagine it's very easy to scale buildings and leap from rooftops in that crazy armor.

By the way since you all asked I hatehatehate the "pick one of two protagonists" thing games been doing for the last few years, it always ends in both characters being underwritten and is so transparently a way to claim to have a female protag while sidestepping the fact that female protags don't sell as well as males.

The smosh AC3 Music video parody took more effort to make then this retarded game lmao

How was it anti christian and pro muslim?
Personally I got very buttmad when in revelations they made the ottomans that sacked the city and destroyed an uncountable number of historic architecture and priceless works of art while brutalizing the civilian population for 3 days straight the good guys while making the greeks being hunted in the street the villains.

Its not even that its historically insulting, literally why in the fuck would you make the villains the fucking underdog if you want me to take your plot seriously?

Btw this crap has led to the Wikipedia war of Troon jannies change Yasuke’s article so that he is a samurai. The sources? Lockey’s (a hotep) historical fiction where he keeps saying he made shit up/filled the gaps. Locked it as well to make it permanent.

Never did this for the years the article was up until AssAssins Creed: Niggers got put on blast. This of course now means a whole bunch of “journalists” will cite it as true and accurate.

I find it hilariously tragic that since they announced this shitheap of a game there have been at least two rapes of Japanese women by negroid US servicemen. Truly preserving Yasuke's memory in the japanese minds.
It's unfortunately common, especially around Okinawa. For some reason, black people in the Marine Corps can't stop themselves from raping the women in the area.

The genuine outrage from actual Japanese gamers is mounting, and a little inspiring. I'm surprised the petition hasn't been mentioned yet. Here's a decent article. [Archive]

It's one thing to brush it off when it's clickbait on Twitter...
There's no way they can cancel or even sufficiently modify the game this late in development. I can't find anything on its budget, but judging by the price tag and promotion I'd bet they've poured tens of millions into this project. At least.

These frenchmen are in quite the pickle.

Did anyone get a final character they/them count

Can't release the game without the requisite they/them quota getting filled

Unsurprising. This is meant to be a stealth/assassin game and you are running around as the only nigger in Japan, having Japanese bow down, cutting their heads off to hip hop beats, then when people want to talk about historical accuracy of this historical character, you have westerners openly promote hotep fictional history (which btw, the Smithsonian and other "respectable" institutions also push) and alter perception of this character. No, he's definitely a samurai and we are changing/altering and locking the wikipedia article to make it sound like the most obvious thing.

Ubisoft were so late to the most obvious setting for an assassins creed game that several other studios ran with the idea, and the only change they brought outside of the brand was a nigger. Japs like to elevate him (see Nioh - Obsidian Samurai), but usually as a minor character, not the main character. Fuck, they would rather put William Adams as a main character of Nioh given his historical importance.
