Culture Assassin's Creed Shadows Is Already Being Called "Woke" And "Disrespectful" - Assassin's Creed Shadows' two protagonists are getting the abuse we all sadly expected.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is already being labeled as "woke" and "disrespectful" following its announcement trailer, primarily due to main characters Naoe and Yasuke, the latter of whom is historically considered Japan's first black samurai.

Ubisoft has finally lifted the lid on the next mainline Assassin's Creed, revealing that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on November 15 later this year. While we didn't get any gameplay, we did get a lengthy cinematic trailer going into the backstories of the game's two main protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. Naoe appears to be a Shinboi from the Japanese provinces, while Yasuke is considered to be Japan's first black samurai, and came into contact with several prominent figures in Japanese history.

That means Assassin's Creed Shadows will center around a woman and a black man, and some people on social media have reacted with exactly the kind of behavior we have come to expect nowadays whenever a protagonist isn't a straight white man. In the replies of Ubisoft's announcement tweet, you don't have to look very hard for people decrying the game as "woke" and "disrespectful", with a sprinkling of DEI in there for good measure.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' Yasuke Is Somehow "Disrespectful" To Japan

Most of the vitriol revolves around Yasuke, with some people taking issue with the fact that they're being made to play as a black man in a Feudal Japan setting, despite the character being a key figure in Japanese history. Some claim that it's inappropriate for Ubisoft to have someone who isn't native to the country as one of the main characters, though I don't think these same people take issue with the fact that the incredibly Welsh Edward Kenway was sailing around the Carribean in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

You've also got some stating that Yasuke wasn't actually a samurai, but was a retainer to Oda Nobunaga, and that this somehow "disrespects" Japanese culture. However, people are already pointing out Yasuke was Nobunaga's Kosho, which is essentially the bodyguard or personal servant of a general or lord and is considered a samurai in Japanese history. Just because Yasuke didn't belong to a Samurai clan, it doesn't mean he wasn't one.

Ghosts of Tsushima just released on PC. Not to mention other samurai games like Samurai Warriors and Like a Dragon: Ishin. There's literally no reason to look forward to this. Especially when Assassin's Creed lost its charm after the Ezio trilogy.
I know it's been mentioned already but the last half decade has given us loads of good samurai games ranging from pulpy to realistic. GoT as you mentioned, Nioh/2, Sekiro, Rise of the Ronin, and others. Ubisoft is gonna get beat in the gameplay department, the world building department, and the historical department.

Senior Writer For ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Declared: “There’s More Than Enough Games Out There With White Men As The Only Playable Characters. Let’s Do Better.”
Assassin’s Creed Shadows follows the story of Yasuke and Naoe. An explainer trailer featuring Game Director Charles Benoit and Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies from Ubisoft provided insight into the characters and why they were chosen .

Benoit began, “With our dual protagonists, we have two fantasies: the samurai and the shinobi. We want the player to experience both. And we cannot squeeze both fantasies into one character because the samurai and shinobi came from different social classes. They have different lives, so we cannot really mix them together.”
What social class do they think the foreigner they have playing the Samurai comes from, I wonder? Perhaps the Kingly class?

The Fool of Owari really is the best boy. For extra irony points, Nobunaga is a huge Westaboo hence his push for matchlocks and importing of Western goods.
It paid off for him at Nagashino when his staggered volley fire fucked up the finest calvary force of the period.
The way you can tell woke shit comes from the top on down and is being pushed by the elites is how despite woke movies bombing, despite woke TV shows getting terrible ratings, despite them losing tons of money they continue to be made no matter what. That's how you know something far more sinister then just "We want more black people in video games!" is going on.
A people that has no past has no future.

And we cannot squeeze both fantasies into one character because the samurai and shinobi came from different social classes. They have different lives, so we cannot really mix them together.”
and then he added "Making them two separate, tighter, cleaner games was clearly out of the question because Assassin's Creed isn't known for sequels or spinoffs". "We have to throw every single idea we have in to this game right now instead of writing one idea down for later. It's very important to business leaders we rush this out so it can unfavorably be compared to Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh, and Rise of the Ronin."

"Also the player can't be both because we don't have any historical record of a Ninja or any other spy impersonating a Samurai or any other 'Officer' figure in an army. It's just something that clearly never could or would have ever happened. That would be like if an Assassin dressed like a Monk to better blend into a middle eastern culture or positioned himself as a Pirate Captain to give him free reign to go where he needed. Poppycock, honestly." he clarified.

"It has to be dual characters - it worked out really well with Evie and whatshisface. It was a really worthwhile addition."

Sweet Baby, Inc. has done so much damage to the video game industry that they are now using “black samurai killing Japanese people” as an excuse to discrimate and shame White people, while mocking Asian history in the process.

There is another problem... SHINOBI AND SAMURAI DO NOT COME FROM DIFFERENT FUCKING SOCIAL CLASSES! EVERY SINGLE FUCKING SHINOBI (in the narrow sense of the word) WAS A MEMBER OF THE SAMURAI CLASS.

EVERY. SINGLE. ONE!

The only people who were allowed to be fully trained in the arts of the shinobi were samurai from the regions of Iga and Koga, which had their own shinobijutsu schools. A shinobi was a profession, not a social class. Those are shinobi in the narrow sense of the word. Shinobi in the broad sense of the word was every dickhead who was hired to perform one or more tasks that shinobi were trained in but did not have any formal training. For example the famous shinobi Fuma Kotaro was most likely not even a true shinobi in the narrow sense of the word.

I'm pretty sure people are upset that the Japanese Samurai is not actually Japanese, and also it doesn't help that the female character is rather bland looking at best.

The gimmick was never ninjas but not Japan. It started out as a sci-fi/historical fiction game about an order of assassins that did exist during the Crusades.

Know what groups appear in less games than black people? Ainu, Sami, Melanesians, Polynesians, Irish Travellers, and Andamanese. Not counting sports games, there's always been tons of games with black characters. Name a single game with a character from one of the Andamanese ethnic groups.
