Culture Assassin's Creed Shadows Is Already Being Called "Woke" And "Disrespectful" - Assassin's Creed Shadows' two protagonists are getting the abuse we all sadly expected.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is already being labeled as "woke" and "disrespectful" following its announcement trailer, primarily due to main characters Naoe and Yasuke, the latter of whom is historically considered Japan's first black samurai.

Ubisoft has finally lifted the lid on the next mainline Assassin's Creed, revealing that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on November 15 later this year. While we didn't get any gameplay, we did get a lengthy cinematic trailer going into the backstories of the game's two main protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. Naoe appears to be a Shinboi from the Japanese provinces, while Yasuke is considered to be Japan's first black samurai, and came into contact with several prominent figures in Japanese history.

That means Assassin's Creed Shadows will center around a woman and a black man, and some people on social media have reacted with exactly the kind of behavior we have come to expect nowadays whenever a protagonist isn't a straight white man. In the replies of Ubisoft's announcement tweet, you don't have to look very hard for people decrying the game as "woke" and "disrespectful", with a sprinkling of DEI in there for good measure.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' Yasuke Is Somehow "Disrespectful" To Japan

Most of the vitriol revolves around Yasuke, with some people taking issue with the fact that they're being made to play as a black man in a Feudal Japan setting, despite the character being a key figure in Japanese history. Some claim that it's inappropriate for Ubisoft to have someone who isn't native to the country as one of the main characters, though I don't think these same people take issue with the fact that the incredibly Welsh Edward Kenway was sailing around the Carribean in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

You've also got some stating that Yasuke wasn't actually a samurai, but was a retainer to Oda Nobunaga, and that this somehow "disrespects" Japanese culture. However, people are already pointing out Yasuke was Nobunaga's Kosho, which is essentially the bodyguard or personal servant of a general or lord and is considered a samurai in Japanese history. Just because Yasuke didn't belong to a Samurai clan, it doesn't mean he wasn't one.

People asked for a Japan AC game for damn near 10 years, and Ubisoft didn't start working on it until Ghosts of Tsushima came out and basically made it pointless.

Not only that, but they leaked this shit about the Afro Samurai like two years ago at least, and absolutely everyone I saw who read about it thought it was awful.

Does modern entertainment do any sort of market research? focus group testing? All I have consistently seen since at least 2020, but probably even before, are films and video games that not only does nobody actually want, but they actively say do not fucking make. It's like film and video games want their industry to crash or something.
They outsourced their market research to companies like Sweet Baby Ray who acted like Worm Tongue to the CEO and board and told them if they don't adhere to the woke agenda hardcore, there will be 'consequences...'

I never get why they keep trying to make this guy a Samurai. Isn't a black man being able to somehow survive in feudal Japan as the servant of Nobunaga enough to be worth told as is?
I remember there was an anime about this guy and they felt the need to shove in mechs, got to make sure he's super badass.

This shit is amazing, they took some warlords pet nigger and made him into a WE WUZ character
That "racist" statement reads like the they were more concerned about accidentally causing an internal incident by killing a foreigner. Japs are fine with killing those they see as lesser and IDK why this man would respect Nobu's court dwarf of all people.

Did the author have a stroke, or they just projected an interest in a pooner AC character?
The name is afterall based on Naoe Kanetsugu, an actual samurai born in 1599.

Also, there's the western 'actor instead of actress' nonsense, where the appropriate title is kunoichi.

A story about a black guy in feudal Japan could be interesting. Even if we're using this dude and took creative license with it. There's nothing necessarily wrong with using a historical figure in which there's not a lot known about them -- Koei's been doing it for years with the Dynasty Warriors series (and even some of that shit is based off of the fantastical novelization and not the 'historical record.')

I'm not trying to equivocate Dynasty Warriors games bending history like it's taffy with this AC nonsense, but just to highlight that there is a way to go about doing these things.

Here's a basic, simple premise that I don't think people would be as up in arms about: black guy in feudal Japan, is part of Nobunaga's retinue. After Akechi Mitsuhide kills Nobunaga, there's turmoil and upheaval, dude has to try to survive in a place where he is a literal outsider. Maybe he learns some sword techniques from another member of Nobunaga's entourage and blahblahblah.

It'd also have the added bonus of being able to do race relations shit (feudal Japan? Xenophobic? Naaaaaaaahhhhhhhh) which would score those lovely DEI and ESG points.

There's so much shit that they could've used instead of just using this as a 'WE WUZ SAMURAIZ 'N SHEEIT' platform, but that'd require people who were talented at their jobs and able to think beyond trolling Wikipedia for 'black people in [X] time period.' Cos I guarantee you this came about as a result of all the furor relating to CD Projekt Red and the Witcher as well as that feudal game I can't recall the name of.

Tenchu, Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro and already exists. This FRAUD of a game deserves to be treated like the propaganda-laced poor imitation that it is. Ignored and shat on.

Also, surprised they haven't done WW2 yet considering their desire to own Nazis. Here they can legit get away with using a crippled nigger to do assassin shiet.

Either that, or they honestly forget that they pay for these bots and shills on social media and that they don't actually spend money.
Nope. Its also important to remember that these companies and the wokies over at BRIDGE are doing this to terraform the West into a Communist state. Hence all the demoralization tactics and throwing money away.

There's even a speaker at those events that point out that "Money is tertiary" Because they know that if they succeed in creating an entire generation of wokies, they can make it all back.

Yes, its the usual suspects from Gamergate who went from obscure podcast listened to by Feminists to being catered to by the elites. Tumblr is cancer.

There was a modern Tenchu successor in Aragami 1 & 2. Sadly the studio shut down.

You forgot to mention that its highly likely he was fanfiction seeing as how the only records about him come from literal who missionarys
Beyond that, in Japan, William is accepted as part of Japan's history whereas you ask about yasuke and it's 'yasuke who?'.
Not true. Japs know who he was, and there are references to the guy in Japanese sources. There's even a legend he escaped with Nobunaga's head.

Instead, Mitsuhide gave him back to the Jesuits like any other piece of lost property.
Mitsuhide had been Nobunaga's vassal when Yasuke showed up, he knew Yasuke's origin and saw no reason to antagonize the foreigners who weren't a party to the conflict and who he'd need to buy weapons from.
Yasuke existed, he carried a sword, he fought. Whether he was or was not a true and honest samurai by some rubric is pointless sperging that the journo had preempted with "considered"). Additionally, picking a character and blowing his importance out of proportion is what historical novels etc always do.

Meanwhile on more public forums of discourse, Twitter users are posting screenshots of Japanese users questioning the choice and pointing out the potential racism of a foreigner slaughtering Japanese in their country.
Oh wow, Americans are SUDDENLY concerned that natives don't like being slaughtered in the media.

A lot of the posts in the thread (not these ^ ones, these were the most interesting ones) are gay, cowardly, hypocritical, and illiterate w.r.t. historicity.
There are 2 real problems with Samurai Kangs:
  1. AssCreed traditionally feature natives, even back when they pushed the ancestry + time travel plot the hardest. A game set in Japan should have had a Japanese protagonist, not a foreigner.
    • It's ASScreed, the protagonist is supposed to be a (traditional native) stealthy killer. A 7 ft tall black man cannot be a ninja in Sengoku Japan.
  2. The Japanese don't like nogs. Very few demographics like nogs. This has nothing to do with historicity, enough Japs would love to get slaughtered by Renaissance French poufters or Spanish inquisitors or Napoleonic dragoons or American cowboys for the game to sell well, it's just that nogs have no aesthetic appeal.
    • That said, "Asian" men in the US are just as repulsive to their own women as nogs -- unfortunately no breakdown by Asian subrace but EXCLUDING pajeets and sandniggers.

You don't recall the outrage with that one Resident Evil game set in Africa?

He existed, but the story you're referring to is the Honnoji Incident, where Nobunaga and 30 of his men were surrounded by 13,000 soldiers. The more likely story is that he surrendered and was returned to the Jesuits as you posited.

This is also from the same historical record that can't quite figure out why exactly Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga (which would be of greater cultural significance) and accounts of Yasuke were spotty, with some being secondhand and after the fact. Not quite on the level of Romance of the Three Kingdoms being written centuries later, but yeah.

Again, a historical figure of which just enough is known about is perfect fodder for historical fiction. The problem is with retards holding up stories of dubious authenticity as the real unvarnished truth and What Actually Happened.

This is the only real issue I have with the news. I don’t play the asscreed games(outside of trying out the discovery mode in Odyssey) so it’s not like I was going to buy it anyway, but it’s just so disrespectful and Americentric to shoehorn a nigger into the role that should be filled by a Japanese character.

I fuck with America heavy, USA #1 and all that, but the people behind the decision definitely don’t feel the same way. Yet they still have to view the world through an American lens and allow their worship of the nigger to taint everything they do and if you have the temerity to point out that maybe a game set in feudal Japan should feature Japanese characters, they turn it around as if somehow you’re the racist.

It’s just so tiresome.

Going after the US for this is barking up the wrong tree. The company behind this game is French and the main developer of the game is out of Quebec.

It seems everyone but Americans are working on this game.

ubisoft doesn't need to outsource anything, not only are they full of fucking leafs of the worst kind, they had a big #metoo thing in 2020 which removed some of the last gatekeepers (literally, one complaint was that the dude was adamant an asscreed protag needs to be male and white). after that ubisoft basically tripped over themselves trying to make up for it going all in with DEI and rainbow shit.

why do you think all their games of the last 5 years suck so hard?

Dunno what AC fans are left but I was under the impression they've been asking for a proper title set in Japan for over a decade. Imagine 1) being an AC fan for that long and 2) when you got what you wanted, you have to play as a Crimes Expert.
they have, and the answer was pretty much "lol never" because it's apparently too on the nose or too easy whatever. due to that over time it became "in case of emergency" asscreed title, meaning if ubisoft ever does a japan asscreed they must be really desperate.

apparently their operative income has dropped fucking 75%, so you'd assume they put some effort into it. but ubisoft gotta ubisoft.
