Anyone who doesn't consult several guides before even bringing up Dwarf Fortress is either a genius or a masochist or both.

I agree with a lot of what's been posted in this thread already.
That said, one scenario that I've yet to see brought up which I've found myself dealing with multiple times are the moments in games where the solution isn't actually all that difficult in and of itself, but actually pulling it off is a motherfucker. Particularly when you're playing on the harder difficulty settings.
God of War's family defense section. Bioshock Infinite's airship defense section. Pretty much everything in F-Zero GX. Not a one of those has an obtuse solution. They're all just massive pains to pull off.

I concur. But it can still help in situations like these since there's often a tip which tells you how to at least improve your odds even though skill's the only thing which'll save you in the end. Sometimes it's all a matter of mastering a core mechanic you've neglected that the game just didn't do a very good job of explaining on her own. The parry from Metal Gear: Rising's the obvious example, but there's one which sticks out much more vividly in my mind.I've looked up guides in this situation, too. It really sucks to learn that you're doing everything right, you just need to do it better.
