At what point do we resort to guides?

I agree with a lot of what's been posted in this thread already.

That said, one scenario that I've yet to see brought up which I've found myself dealing with multiple times are the moments in games where the solution isn't actually all that difficult in and of itself, but actually pulling it off is a motherfucker. Particularly when you're playing on the harder difficulty settings.

God of War's family defense section. Bioshock Infinite's airship defense section. Pretty much everything in F-Zero GX. Not a one of those has an obtuse solution. They're all just massive pains to pull off.

I've looked up guides in this situation, too. It really sucks to learn that you're doing everything right, you just need to do it better.

HOW DOES I KILLED CYBERDEMON?

Anyone who doesn't consult several guides before even bringing up Dwarf Fortress is either a genius or a masochist or both.

I concur. But it can still help in situations like these since there's often a tip which tells you how to at least improve your odds even though skill's the only thing which'll save you in the end. Sometimes it's all a matter of mastering a core mechanic you've neglected that the game just didn't do a very good job of explaining on her own. The parry from Metal Gear: Rising's the obvious example, but there's one which sticks out much more vividly in my mind.

I remember when I played Tales of Xillia 2, and I decided right away to stay on Hard Mode all the way through for my first play through since I'd never done it before while playing the series. Unfortunately, those cunts at Namco decided that you shouldn't be able to pick your own party setup for over 90% of the game. This leaves you all sorts of fucked at many points, with particular emphasis on Chapter 12.

In Chapter 12, you're forced to face the hardest boss in the whole game with the worst possible party configuration and no way to switch them out. His name's Victor. He level scales, so it's impossible to grind over him. He has no natural weaknesses. He has unlimited energy to perform special techniques since this is a JRPG and "fuck you, we don't have to be fair". He has three different weapons he can switch into at any time, one of which is a fucking gun which does to the game's balance what Jared Fogle does to middle school girls.

Victor also has a healing attack which he can use an unlimited number of times: His favorite of which is when you've knocked him down to a quarter of his health and have run out of items. Said attack also renders a special item in the game intended to cut damage received and inflicted in half worthless since the attack heals him for the same amount of damage either way.

The only way to win is by exploiting the games weakness system and charge mechanic. Something the game never once bothers explaining, and which I still have a hard time understanding since the rules convoluted to the point of making a Reverse Battle Royal look straightforward. And like I said, the knowledge of how to actually utilize this system only means so much. Actually pulling it off and pulling it off right will likely only happen after several dozen more failed attempts to make Victor pay for every second of torture he's put you through.

Finally killing this faggot was orgasmic.

When I have no fucking clue on how to advance after trying anything and everything.
