Status effects like Bleed end up being pretty much an insta-kill for the player, because by the time the effect triggers (at least for me), I've already taken so much damage that I haven't got a chance in hell to go into my inventory and use a bandage

One of the few things I changed from the default settings was to make it so the game pauses when you go into your inventory. I hate it when games don’t let you pause in every menu.

The torch (flashlight) ends up being pretty pointless in and of itself, since I haven't yet found any areas where it's so dark that it's needed. BUT, it has a really useful secondary function in that all nearby items that you move the torch over flash white.

To me, that’s not a secondary ability. That’s the main one. Going into a bunker or building and not immediately whipping out the flashlight once you get it is a dummy’s way to play.

The RPG part of the game is pretty lacklustre as far as skills and builds go

What bothers me about "representation" in western games is that there just seems to be a rule in the western game industry that no matter what, there must be diversity and lgbtq+ representation, no matter to what degree, and after decades of noticing this and noticing that white men are more and more portrayed in a negative light in every form of media, i can't help but feel annoyed when i see either in settings where there's supposed to be mostly white characters, and truthfully, even when there's a statistical probability that there "could" have been browns/fags in there, i really just don't want to see them there anymore.

Like, is it too much to ask to have a game where we are not confronted with that, has there been a game where that's the case in the last 20 years? Swinging knives or shooting a rifle isn't some kind of herculean feat requiring the muscle mass of a bison and thirty-eleven straight years of strict training, a fucking kid could do it. They're also only found amongst the outlaws or druids - the remnants of the army in the game doesn't have any women in it.

Re. women as combatants, in the "cosy catastrophe" subgenre of mid-century British sci-fi that has clearly been a big influence on Atomfall the women tend to be the competent sort (if I was feeling less generous I'd say they are written as men with tits). In fact I'm pretty sure a plot point in Day of the Triffids is a schism in a group of survivors because someone wants to make the women into broodmares.

Added to the above, women are more than capable of using small arms just as well as men, unless I've been doing it very wrong. I've never had to use my cock and balls to work the action of any rifle I've used.
