Alright, beat the game last night. Would agree with
@Delicious Diversity on a solid 7/10. I'm a bit split on saying I feel like it missed its mark a bit and saying it was well contained - the game left me wanting to explore more, but if it had been twice the size, I might've gotten bored instead. I guess I'll count it as a win in its favour - plenty of cool shit in the background looking out over the lake that I'd like to explore in the future.
If anything I'd criticise the amount of weapons in the game, and the endings. There are plenty of weapons, but depending on where you go first, you might not end up finding cool weapons you'd like to use until close to the end of the game. There's two druids hanging out in a cave armed with a sweet-ass flanged maces which I found within the last couple of hours, and that replaced the axe as my favourite weapon. I barely got to use any of the Protocol weapons because I didn't kill any of them until near the end of the game. The endings, while numerous, are essentially brief epilogues without much difference between them. I played up until what felt like the PONR, saved, and manged to get three endings by making minor choices in the last location. It's not Mass Effect 3 levels of bad, but they all basically amount to "Go here, win, get a few seconds of story unique to your chosen path". The seemingly best ending is semi-hidden, too.
What's more surprising to me is that Rebellion is still a thing. Damn would have thought they'd have been purchased by a AAA publisher forced to make some shitty trend hopping games and then killed of by the publisher for making shitty games.
The CEO has a book, "Leading the Rebellion", where he writes, in part, about how he does business. Having read it, I don't think they're likely to be bought out as long as the Kingsley brothers are in charge.
Got soft locked in the medical wing and lost an hour of progress. I have the necessary amount of batteries now and I am just going to see the story through at this point. The more time I try the melee the more I absolutely hate it. I would say it's definitely the type of game that makes me thankful for Game Pass. Not worth full price.
Have you tried kicking? A solid kick will stagger the enemy back, giving you plenty of time for a heavy swing with a big weapon like the axe or mace. Or, as
@CyrusHowler suggests, use faster weapons. I wouldn't say that the melee is great by any stretch of the imagination, but the kick (and mobility) is the king of melee.
