Whether their relationship was romantic or just friendly, it's probably this show's greatest failing that Historia got functionally thrown out of the manga after the Uprising arc. Also doesn't help that Ymir gets killed off offscreen and her Titan goes to a placeholder in Porco Galliard.
It always seems to suck when you just put a character on the sidelines instead of properly writing them out. Hope “being queen” and “running an orphanage” was worth being casted off.

Ymir being killed off-screen is okay, it was pretty much known, iirc, that she was going to her death, it doesn't necessarily need to be shown.
Except that she made the decision to go with Reiner on pretty much no coherent logic besides him going "Historia will be safe if you come with us". Yet she'd also been planning to take Historia with her for part of it. When the shoe dropped about the larger world, all Ymir's decision-making in the ~40s becomes suicidal gibberish where she pretty much has no will to live and wants herself and Historia to get executed by Marley.

How many more endings is this shit getting? Why won't it die?!
Not even new endings. (That requiem thing isn't official right? That's just fan cope that a fan studio is animating, at least to my understanding.) They're giving it the Skyrim treatment by repackaging the same content in different formats. I'm sure somewhere down the road they'll have Isayama shit out either a sequel series or Rebuild of Attack On Titan where he shoves in fanservice-y crowd pleasers at every turn and ultimately gives a relatively cliché final resolution that puts the series to rest for good.

This is real.

Context: Kendrick Lamar hates Drake so much that he called him a pedo on national television, and got the entire stadium to do so as well during the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime.

Finally got around to watching the final 2 specials. I'm not a huge anime guy these days but really liked this show. Season 3 part 2 is still incredible and has some of my favourite episodes of any tv show. Would have been a contender for best anime ever if it finished at the end of season 3.

Even the first season, although a bit juvenile at times, is still great for some simple minded adrenaline pumping action.

It's really a shame that the quality dropped for season 4. To me it just felt like the original essence and intrigue was gone. I loved all the insane lore drops in season 3 and the way the possibilities about what was beyond the wall were getting crazier by the minute. Then they finally reach the ocean, and we see beyond the island, and it's just a ww2 metaphor and extremely generic "war bad" shite.

Season 4 had its moments, but it just felt so different in almost every aspect to the previous seasons. I always felt like attack on titan was at its best when showing these relatively small victories and "man of the hour" moments, like when Sasha saved the kid from her village, and when Eren plugged the hole in wall maria back in season 1. Season 4 felt too generic to me as it slipped into more of a "save the whole world" plot, which is so prevalent in Japanese forms of media.

The basic concept of the show had so much potential, and I think that can be seen when looking back at how insanely popular it was when it first came out. I have some good memories of those days, back when I was in my high school weeb phase, running home in early summer to watch the latest episode... I remember that wait for season 2 being brutal.

Also I think it's worth mentioning, i really appreciate how almost every question and theory that people had in the early days about the show were answered in a satisfying way. Everything from the origins of titans, to the mystery of the basement, to the history of the Eldians and Paradis Island (and more i've probably forgotten), were all revealed, whereas I think in most shows these things would be forgotten about or glossed over quickly.

I'll probably go back and rewatch up to season 3 part 2 at some point.

Also btw the soundtrack is one of the best.

If anyone knows any other forms of media that are similar to peak attack on titan I'd love to hear it. I've played Xenoblade Chronicles 1, which I felt dealt with some similar themes, and I really enjoyed that.

I saw this map from a while ago that represents what Eren killing 80% of the world would look like, but I can't tell if this would actually happen, or if it's just the creator trying to put bias in the certain countries he/she likes:

The fact that Haiti is untouched would prove that Haitians are indeed human cockroaches that refuse to die, much to the dismay of their Dominican neighbors. The two Koreas being intact could mean either re-unification, or because blatant K-Pop and Dear Leader worshipping. And Nippon being intact is self-explanatory, as well as TAIWAN NUMBA ONE, Israel still existing, and the Pakis won their feud against the Pajeets.

Just got around to watching the whole series, and it pretty quickly became second on my list of worse anime of all times which is a bit ironic considering how well (too well actually) it was in grabbing and holding the audience attention. It's just too bad there was essentially nothing good beneath it all when it came to the story.

Hek, right now I'm re-watching parts of season 1 and can't sense of it in the grand scheme of things. For example, I know it's Annie, Berthold, and Reiner's mission to locate and retrieve the Founding Titan. Ok fine. Do they know who has it? Not really. They only suspect the king should possess that power, but we know that Eren has it. Ok that's fine, but what's not fine is that as early as episode 17 (if I'm not mistaken) they all seem to now have turned their attention to Eren even though they have no proof that he possesses the Founding Titan. I know the show has these characters interested in Eren for being able to transform into a titan like they do which is understandable, but again, there's no reason for them to decide to go after him just because of that. What's even more ridiculous than this though is that only Annie is the only one really going for Eren in season 1. Reiner indirectly helps by telling Annie where to find Eren, but this begs the question : If they knew or just suspected Eren was the Founding Titan at this point, why didn't they all go after him then and there?

Sometimes I wonder if he even had an editor or someone honest to give feedback. How did nobody go "uh, hey, so...this needs work"?

There's nothing satisfying about the Titan's origins (random, unexplained, pre-existing parasite in a tree) nor why Eren has his powers (he's a time travelling lunatic under the influence of Ymir). I'd almost rather not know.

It's up there with Death Note for best anime OST.

Similar in quality or themes? The aforementioned Death Note is even better than AoT, but obviously not combat focused but still has the twists. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, it's more action-heavy and has a similar premise but isn't as "cerebral" (no way to phrase it without sounding pretentious lol) as the others.

I also recommend Kurozuka, it's dark like those aforementioned anime but not really very similar, it's kinda weird/psychedelic. It's very good and has a kickass opening (don't read the comments, it's spoiler city):

It ends up being the worst kind of story. A time travel plot, with the writer doing zero planning, so nothing makes sense in the end. And on top of that it's the standard mystery box style writing with no payoff for anything as well.
For example, I know it's Annie, Berthold, and Reiner's mission to locate and retrieve the Founding Titan.
Their mission was actually to exterminate all life within the Walls. And locate the Founding Titan and take it back. But this is a plot hole in that the Attack Titan is missing by this point and his last known location was the ocean shore on Paradis Island. So they would also know that the people in the Walls have most likely two Titan powers and that the Attack Titan has defected since it never returned back home. The Attack Titan has been missing for nearly a decade and they don't seem concerned at all.
If they knew or just suspected Eren was the Founding Titan at this point, why didn't they all go after him then and there?
All the writers needed to say was that they suspected Eren was the Attack Titan and that someone else had the Founding Titan. This would explain why they didn't just kidnap Eren and run away. They had to remain in place as spies because the real target of the Founding Titan was more important. But even more idiotic is that they lost another Titan Power when they breached the Walls. So they are actually missing three Titan Powers by the time Eren is revealed to be a Titan. They show barely any urgency or paranoia that they are now outnumbered where it's three on three Titans but humanity in the Walls had all of their anti-Titan gear to win any battle.

They literally don't even bother to acknowledge that there is another Titan somewhere lurking out there that might recognize them and kill them. Or that the Attack Titan's memory ability might reveal them as spies at any moment.
There's nothing satisfying about the Titan's origins (random, unexplained, pre-existing parasite in a tree) nor why Eren has his powers (he's a time travelling lunatic under the influence of Ymir). I'd almost rather not know.
Practically everything about the Titans that is revealed is embarrassingly awfully written.

It's a good soundtrack because it's almost all remakes of Aphex Twin tracks.

But the Attack Titan didn't defect, it was just dormant, right?

Never heard of that, is it another anime?

Eren's father carried the Attack Titan to the Walls. Then he ate the person with the Founding Titan and therefore had two Titan Powers. Eren eats him and inherits both. Eren is named after the guy who gave the power to Grisha.
Never heard of that, is it another anime?
Every Death Note track is plagiarized from other artists. Most of them are carbon copies down to the notes. It's hilarious how blatant it is.

The Attack Titan was a secret IIRC. As in, no one knew about it. It's like super lore dumped while Grisha is sitting on the shore with Eren (the old one) so it's like easy to miss. It's been a while since I've seen the scene too so i might be misremembering, but the concept Eren explains is that the Titans are also aspects of Ymir. The Attack Titan is unique from the others because it allows the user to see future user's memories, and thus it's users always strive to achieve freedom no matter the cost. I think it was a matter of it literally wasn't on the radar of Marley because it was never an issue. They had 7 and were looking to control the founding and thus this final one wouldn't be a problem? The reason Reiner, Bertholt, and Annie focus in on him is that they presume he must be the founding titan since why would there be another shifter on the island that wasn't the founding? In the later season when he touches Dina and activates the PATHs it basically affirms for Reiner that Eren is the Founding Titan; however, he lacks the knowledge and ability to use it's power. I don't think they even call it the attack titan until eren sees the flashback with his dad.

The story doesn't explain where Kruger gets the Attack Titan from or it's status prior to him receiving it. I'm assuming Marley was not in control of it and had no clue where it was or what it was doing. It just wasn't popping up in their campaign of conquest so they didn't care.

What's even more ridiculous than this though is that only Annie is the only one really going for Eren in season 1. Annie separated herself from the pack to get more intel from inside the inner wall, and assist as able when Reiner and Bertholdt needed it. R and B were hesitant because things weren't adding up, and after spending 4 years becoming friends they thought they might be able to draw eren into the fold without conflict. Annie isn't even really "going" for him. She only does when it's a case of them leaving for the expedition because if she manages to snatch and grab at that moment the survey corp would be unable to follow d/t being outside the wall and outnumbered. Since she had the cover of being an MP and nowhere near she was acting as their active operative.

There are nine Titan powers. These powers only work on descendants of Ymir. If someone dies naturally or is killed when they have Titian powers their powers go back to Ymir in the Paths and she then gives them to the next born child who descends from her. This happens unless they are consumed by another Titan and then their powers get passed to the one who eats them. This is why when someone died with a Titan power in battle the power wouldn't be lost forever. It would simply return to the ether and then the next infant born would inherit the 'curse'. But when Eren sees Ymir building the Titans out of sand he realizes that she chooses who gets to inherit the powers.

This is sort of a plot hole in that when a Titan died the power never was transferred to the one of the descendants of Ymir who lived inside of the Walls. This is never really explained in the manga and is a shortcoming of the writing. All the Titans had to do was die at the same time then have Ymir give their powers to a bunch of newborns who were inside of the Walls. Or at least have some of the powers randomly sent to the people inside of the Walls. Instead the powers somehow only go to people outside of the Walls. The writers weren't really thinking this all through.
The Attack Titan is unique from the others because it allows the user to see future user's memories.
It can actually see all memories of all Titan users before it. This is how Eren can see Ymir's entire life and know the origins of the Titans. Eren seeing the future and deciding to have his own mother being eaten is just idiotic writing when he's an all powerful being.

Eren Kruger gets the Attack Titan from an unknown person in chapter 88. It's literally ever explained who this person was and how they kept their Titan power secret for decades or centuries and how no one suspected that Titan powers were being passed down secretly. Likely any explanation was a giant plot hole so the writers just hand waved it.

The aforementioned Death Note is even better than AoT,
Death Note is inherently better than AoT because at least The First Half of Death Note is unironically good..It goes to shit eventually but at least the first part is legit great.

I'll always defend the second half too, it just goes from 10/10 to like an 8.5-9/10, still incredible.

Death Note is inherently better for the simple fact that it never lost sight of its original premise.

That, and because the ethical question it posits is actually incredibly interesting, and doesn't immediately fall apart the moment you really think about it.

Does the Death Note corrupt? Or does it simply reveal the evil that was always there? Hell, practically anything that gives you even a modicum of power should suffice.

Killing people only makes you into a murderer, not a hero. Even if you kill an objectively bad guy, you still took a life, something that should never be taken lightly. Worse if you actually enjoyed doing it.

Like that?

No, it's actually something a lot less moralfaggy, and one that can actually be considered one of the series' critical flaws because it never really talks about this even though it's a major elephant in the room.

You see, it's only mentioned briefly at the end of the series iirc that Light's actions have stopped (if only just temporarily) all wars. If this is true, then just think of how many people have not just benefited from it, but have also been saved because of it.

Think about being some poor bastard in a war-torn country like Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, etc. If someone could suddenly make all the pain, and suffering stop, even if for just a little while, all by just killing the select few responsible, would you be okay with that? Would you go so far as be willing to call him God, and live in his new world? And if you had that same power, would you do it, too?

Regardless of whatever you believe the to be answer, it's a very interesting question, and one that has great arguments for, and against it, and one that AoT doesn't even come close to matching.
