Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
actually published by xbox studios, makes of such great games as Bleeding edge (?), Hellblade, and also with Obsidian is making something something called Grounded (honey i shrunk the kids meets minecraft!) that enters early access in literally 5 days. only time will tell.

it also looks like microsoft and obsidian teamed up to make a launch title for the xbox one called stormlands that was ultimately cancelled.

Regardless of how original the concept is, if they make the game fun, and /or engaging enough to make it worthwhile than that'll be amazing, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I'll hold out hope that this will fill the void Elder Scrolls 6 will almost definitely create, but until we see more than just a few seconds of gameplay, we can't really make any judgements beyond the really generic setting.

Not sure it will be anything good, but god, I miss playing games with fantasy setting. Their original PoE lost me on the very beginning, because holy fuck can you stop with this "playing as a party" nonsense. I want to be my own hero without bunch of boring cunts drilling in my skull and ruining all the fun (and PoE already didn't have much in it).

Really hope Obsidian will get their shit together and make an engaging game (probably they won't).

They decided to include a "reaction" system where every choice you make has effects on your companions' attitudes. So expect a lot of "Aloth didn't like that" and "Pallegina turns her nose". Remember your bro Eder? Now he's become "my wife's son: the character" and Pallegina is still Sawyer's unlikeable bitch of a waifu.
I actually really enjoyed Deadfire way more than PoE 1 but that's because the gameplay is actually interesting and the nautical focus is up my alley. I do agree that the way they had characters react to you (and technically each other) is less interesting. I remember Eder actually gave me a very limp-wristed threat about leaving because I threatened a pirate's dog in front of him.

I'd say Eder has been boiled down to 'Really loves animals and <Jesus Analogue>.' It's implied that the son in question is his and his mother decided to not actually tell him anything about Eder either out of shame of him being Eothasian or just not wanting him to know him. Turns out the son is just as stupid as Eder though.

Pallegina is there essentially to just give you shit if you don't support her side then later to be in a relationship with some Duchess off-screen. So if you or anyone else attempts to flirt with them she just tells them to fuck off. Her biggest character moment is when you have a chance to meet Hylea and it still has no actual effect on the story.

Isn't he always like that though? Been a minute since I played PoE but I remember Eder just being a mild mannered country boy with few opinions of his own. I was told dead fire fleshed out the characters more.

After playing the Outerworlds, I can say that I have low expectations for this game. I wanted to like Outworlds so much and went in massively in favour of Obsidian but I just found it to be so dull and uninteresting. the gameplay was shallow and trivial, the characters were annoying and/or idiotic, the world was felt like a borderlands rip off and was the size of a puddle and the art direction was very confused and yet boring.

I think Outerworlds has made me biased against this new game, especially since after the mediocre fest that it was, the only acceptable opinion online was "the Outerworlds is a masterpiece that makes Bethesda obsolete" even though everyone forgot about it a month after it came out. I expect much of the same from this.

Thats pretty much the common opinion online. It shit the bed hard, I'd be pissed if i paid for it. Its like someone decided to remaster a game from 2005. Asset flips galore. A handful of quests and a length of about a quarter of a day. The sort of game you rented at blockbuster for a weekend. And never played again. Even the DLC looked like shit. And it literally looks like something i already played in the main game. Dlcs should be about going beyond the usual.

Also deciding to go after a fantasy RPG when every studio has already raped that corpse is dumb as shit. Why not an RPG set in the late 90s or one set in prohibition or one set in mayan times or one set in space but still melee heavy like youre trying to steal from Edvar rice Burroughs.

Here's why: they're setting it in Eora, which is where the PoE games are based in. This way they can exert minimal effort by making a cashgrab not!Skyrim while ES6 is in development rather than investing time into creating something actually interesting. I fully expect the game to be forgotten after a couple months, maybe even quicker if there's no mod support. Skyrim has only survived this long thanks to both gameplay mods and porn mods.

The combat looks serviceable, good enough for an RPG game, and a first person kick is always fun
But the animations are terrible there is no weight to the hits, it doesn't help that it looks like a 360 game.

What is weird is how little RPG content they showed off. No dialog, cities, and the only npcs were the trailer narrator and some faceless party members. If I didn't know Obsidian I'd assume this was an action game.

Outer Worlds sucked dick, so I expect the same from this.
Came to say this, after that shit show i'm really doubtful of Obsidian being able to deliver on another game again. Outer Worlds was outrageously shitty for an Obsidian game.
Literally Skyrim with guns:
Yeah, nah. Passing on this, looks like a game i've already played a million times and i don't think modern Obsidian writing can make up for the game looking like a Skyrim mod.

as much shit as pillers two gets (and believe me, it deserves every last one) i still thought it was a decent game overall. the devs just got way ahead of themselves and thought the game would sell more then they thought and decided, to jump on the latest trend to sell out (skyrim). this game will blow just as hard as the guy in the trailers blows you.

That microcephalic baldy selling the most rudimentary Skyrim-style dual wield system like it's somehow revolutionary and not a smorgasbord of elements that have been dated for years is making me lose interest. The worldspace looks like Monster Hunter, all the npcs are niggers or RGB orcs, the setting looks like generic mid fantasy slop, and there's a veneer of Kingdoms of Amalur style cartoonishness that's a turn off for me at least.

Any studio trying to do first person melee should look at Mordhau/Chivalry, KC: D, and Vermintide.
