Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

Some reviewers have praised the combat particularly the magic system but I play RPGs primarily for the story and characters so that's not a draw for me.
Yeah, that's because it's a re-skinned Outer Worlds combat with some new features(from the looks of it, same ones introduced in Outer Worlds 2 like ability to revive someone/have companions revive you). This is why I said I would love a fantasy version of this system, kind of like we have Fallout and Elder Scrolls that kind of play similarly(7th/8th gen entries at least) to one another. Thing is that Obsidian's strategy of shitting out smaller scaled games isn't even that bad on paper, they could make an Avowed/Outer Worlds like game every 2-3 years if they wanted to for some easy, steady money, but they are so incompetent they likely need just as much manpower and resources to produce them as with AAA titles which defeats the whole point, and the results speak for themselves. Anyways, the reviewers are right because the story and characters in Avowed are awful, there is genuinely nothing and nobody to like here, the plot with the sentient fungus infecting your mind is kind of interesting but no doubt done much better in countless other games. Bringing back anyone from this shitheap would be anti-marketing, less people would buy the game because they would know exactly what it will have in store: more of the same.

It's the only actual good part of the game. The only major, glaring flaw in the combat is that it was clearly meant for a multiplayer system so the enemies tend toward sponge and feel stiff, but the actual act of swinging your sword feels good to do. Dodging and such are also welcome additions to the Skyrim formula.
I absolutely hate seeing YouTube, "anti-woke," reviewers acting like Avowed's combat is bad and comparing Skyrim favorably to it because Skyrim's combat can best be described as, "functional."

I somehow lost all my interest in P1 when I arrived to the elf town. Don't remember why. I remember cringing at the "name your OC" character names for the backers but that wasn't the main issue. I finished the game though, but I don't even remember what happened.

BUT I was pretty damn into it at the beginning. The first 1/3rd of the game was really promising and some of the characters were actually cool without overshooting it.

When it comes to pillars, what do people usually like the most? The world, characters? Some mechanics? Combat? If it's the combat, I gotta admit I just half-assed and winged it most of the time without really getting into it.
I'm a big fan of isometric 3D (à la BG) rpg so it scratched that itch, there's a very melancolic theme & the idea of souls being at the center of the worldbuilding was a nice change without being too alien from the habitual fantastic.
I liked the classe tied to it & the chanter, or should I say the return to it since I played Tyranny first. Some characters were intersting too.
While I liked strolling in POE2 like a tourist the story was pure shite. That's why I chose the Tayn ending in Forgotum Sanctum because nothing matter & fuck you game (I was very tempted by the Concelhaut one tho)

Don't quote me on that but wasn't the combat aspect made by a team who knew how to do it? Which is not surprising with the number of different teams who worked on the project.

Huge new Avowed update adds New Game Plus, playable dwarves and Orlans, and quarterstaffs

It's been exactly a year since Avowed released, and Obsidian has continued to support it with new classes, new skills, and better optimization. To coincide with the new PS5 edition, Avowed just got its biggest update yet, adding New Game Plus, three new playable races, and a new weapon class.

Character creation will now let you select Dwarves, Orlans and Aumauans, which is a big step up from the choice between a human or Elf. To refresh your memory, the Orlans are those furry cat-eared creatures, with the most memorable in Avowed being innuendo-happy Yatzli. Companion Kai was an Aumauan: they're big and lanky half-fish half-human beings. All races have different starting attributes too, which compliment new background choice stat boosts. It's starting to feel more like an RPG.

If you're halfway through a playthrough and feel annoyed that you didn't get the chance to start as an Orlan—and I can't blame you—there's a new Magic Mirror you can access at camp to change your race or godlike features, ie, those weird fungus growths that mark you as a godlike.
New Game Plus is what you'd expect: it lets you restart with all the weapons and armor you acquired in an initial playthrough, as well as all unlocked abilities with the exception of godlike ones. Enemies are more durable and powerful, and the player's attribute points cap has raised from 15 to 30.

There's also a new photo mode, and new difficulty sliders, lest those dreamthralls get the better of you. A new quarterstaff weapon class has been added, which is "a new bludgeoning weapon that comes complete with wand style stun finishers"

The full patch notes—and they're long—are on the Obsidian website.

Also why does it take modern soydevs six fucking months to add NG+? That shit used to be standard day 1.
To entice a 2nd wind in sales. Launch the game bare bones. Do six months of bug patching when now that the game is a bit more polished drop the big NG+ update with dome other goodies added and have the game on sale, some old players return to check out the update, they get some buzz, and, new players get in on the sale.

With how relatively easy NG+ is to implement it wouldn't suprise me if they intentionally withheld it while they finished a few things they couldn't complete before launch to do the thing above.

Why are they wasting money on this turd still?
Who wants turn based mode in a first person ARGP that was supposed to be a TESlike?
