Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

So, a lot of people around the internet have been pointing to Avowed's steam numbers to measure it's success, but I haven't seen people bring up the Xbox game charts.

It takes a few days to update, but it doesn't seem to be doing bad within the Xbox eco-system. It's currently sitting higher than GTA 5 and Apex Legends.

I suspect a majority of these are people playing on gamepass, but take it for what you will.

Sure, 'Nips'.
No agenda whatsoever behind a Leaf choir of frog-sounding names.

Who do you think funded this game ? Square enix mandated the inclusion of breach mode, micro transactions, and the ending. Not sure why mankind divided has you so autistic when this game is one of the few that doesn't use it's (albeit) medicore allegory to lecture the audience how bad they are. The game never talks down to you make you feel bad like veilguard, outerworlds, or any other modern trash. Your free to drawn your own conclusions on whether augs are the new 6 gorillion or not. Not to mention in both HR and MD you have the choice to come down on augs or go easy on them (panchea, the orchid) I'm not gonna defend the game's shortcomings. Square enix or not that ending is aburpt. Needed at least another 5 hours of solid gameplay for 60 dollars.

Anyway done with the offtopic. The OG Deus Ex is the goat anyway.

He needed something to be outraged about now that KCD2 sold a lot.
You are correct here.
You are incorrect that its a 6/10 as a long term player of these kind of games its a dogshit 4 at best. For what they're asking its an insult.
You are doing yourself a disservice go play some older games you can pick up for 5 bucks in this vein and you'll enjoy yourself and realize how much they're fucking you over.

I am having fun playing it as I get time to sit down. I like the magic system and the combat. The universe is one I like; while the NPCs look like hot trash, the game has fantastic views with great design and some baffling design and graphics choices. It is a mixed bag.

Come on, dude. You shouldn't disrespect yourself like that.

Apparently Avowed was a success and it's going to have DLC and a sequel in the future.

Some quotes:
Xbox's latest first-party Avowed game looks to be a hit among RPG fans, and Obsidian apparently still has a lot of stories to tell in their unique high fantasy universe. The game's branching paths and choice-driven narrative offers a very Dragon Age-level opportunity for Obsidian to preserve some sort of continuity in between expansions or games.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Avowed game director Carrie Patel expressed interest in staying in the world for a bit:

"Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it."

Reminder that it's been one week since the game has been out and it didn't even hit 20k players.

DLC would have already been greenlit since DLC is almost always cut content nowadays. The big thing would be if DLC was canceled.

Sequel, similar deal given their PoE roots. Same engine, multiple scenario files. They probably always had plans for 2-3+ games using this engine, with the idea being iterative improvements to the engine as they go. That might actually explain the decidedly mid results; they figure anything that's mid now can be upgraded in Avowed 2 or Avowed 3's dev cycle.

This theory, if true, would mean they would be targeting a "good enough" Avowed 1, with plans to immediately / concurrently work on a "better" Avowed 2. Indy and smaller devs often do this sort of thing, to fund the second game with the first game's success. For a larger studio this would give them a "win" to show Microsoft and justify more funding, more staff, etc.

This may have explained their comments about targeting mid, actually.

Give me clocks, but I take it from the online discourse that the weekend bump didn't save the games numbers? The people claiming it was seem to have gone silent on that point.

What's interesting is that i peeked at the resetera thread on avowed and most people were shitting on it there too, and it was allowed by the mods, so it must not be woke enough to justify tribal defense. Leave it to Microsoft to engineer a game in the sweet spot of bland and politically correct enough to not become a culture war football, so mediocre and lacking conviction nobody wants to defend it.
It's too woke, and thus making them look bad, and not woke enough since the devs walked back the pronoun stuff. It annoys both sides.

the basic writing was top notch. The entire game revolving around the competency crisis despite being made in 2019 before that took off was really neat, and i bet if they tripled down on those themes in new and exciting ways they'd be able to make something amazing. In general the worst parts of the game are the ones that are easy to fix (the graphics, making non-ugly characters, combat) Beyond that i pirate so i'm not wasting money if i'm wrong.
What? No it wasn't. The writing was shit from the ground up and baked into it at the core. Every dispute comes down to "white male bad" and "corpo bad". Every moral dilemma has three outcomes; A, B, and compromise C, with C always being the correct choice.

The competency crisis was predicted before release. I even remember Jordon Peterson saying if it continues, bridges will be collapsing and it'll be blamed on lack of diversity. It being a mainstream talking point now means that, as a theme, the game likely won't have it because it would "problematic" or whatever. Given it's anti-capitalism leanings, I won't be surprised if the next game condemns "rainbow capitalism".

Then there's the Rick and Morty fanfic/millennial writing.

As for the gameplay. It's all front loaded to impress reviewers who don't play past the first few hours.

That super weird because unless you're terminally online you don't see very much about Avowed in media coverage. It's not really a hot topic outside the fanbase and some curious players.
On r/Avowed you can only see the one complaining about "the haters" but no one is really trashing the game on the sub, just some normal critics you can see on every games.
If there's a real outrage somewhere it's a very small group, I won't take youtubers opinions because they're vampires who just want le grift.
Even in scandal Avowed is mid. Which is good in my opinion, it's nice for once to not have a media storm polluting everywhere I go.
Avowed is a sad game and there's nothing more to say.
This has been an issue for a while. "I don't like woke media X but..." followed by some word salad about why it's "important".

I thought that was debunked already? Successful AA and AAA games, even with game pass, pull in 6 digit player counts.

The villain is a black woman and the hero is Rick Sanchez-esque white guy. There are a few corpos that aren't bad and they help you out in the end of the game. The women are painted as immature nutcases while the men overall are treated as the only adults in the room. This boils down to the companions as well. With the men being the real "power behind the power" in most of these corporations.

I have seen plenty of it from the grifter crowds as people hope this becomes the newest Concord/Veilgaurd where they can get easy clicks through outrage. Remember the grifting community on YouTube and places like that are slowly collapsing. There are too many; often enough, they are fighting overviews because no one watches their content outside. "This thing is the worst thing ever, be angry" The culture war retards NEEDs these failures, or else they become more and more irrelevant.

Next, we have Assins Creed, a black guy in the Japan edition. And because it will underperform, the grifters will be proclaiming VICTORY!!!! over the WOKE, but then some other game will come out that is woke and sells well, and you don't hear shit about it from the grifter brigade.

More like the grifter, anyone actually outraged at a game is not going to play it unless they hate themselves or they're going to make content from it.
You would be surprised how many people buy and play games because of the hate.
It is a bit like when dumbasses buy a thing that is being boycotted to destroy it; a ton of people do that shit.

Glad I was wrong with my 100K assumption. Still sad to see people here, on RPGHQ, and RPGCODEX playing it. Reminder, if you are White you are playing a woke game made by anti-White people and published by anti-White people. What's even more annoying seeing people who still make excuses for BG3, even calling it non-woke. I think I even saw somebody calling Avowed non-woke:lossmanjack:

I doubt there are that many people actually giving Obsidian money for this. The few who are playing it either pirated it or rented it via Gamepass.

These PR interviews were planned months in advance and the quotes were done well before the game was released. It's the same boilerplate nonsense of "we envision a franchise for this game" or "this world is rich enough to explore in more DLC or a sequel". This game took nearly seven years, one full reboot, a genre change, and Microsoft acquiring them and changing their leadership, to finally get released in its pathetic state. With a full AAA budget all years.

This game would need significant sales to make up for its three years of lost development time as a 'live service action game' in additional to covering the cost of developing what Avowed eventually became. Microsoft is obviously eating the loss here in hopes that they can turn Obsidian around and get the next New Vegas from them. Which is obviously never going to happen.

I highly doubt that this game gets a franchise treatment like a popular game series would get. Mobile games? Sequels? Licensed television show? Spinoff games in other genres (MOBA, card game, etc.)? Toy line? There isn't even multiplayer.

Xbox being huge niggerfaggots is nothing new, this is why you don't give them money. Still, at least when a normalfag pays for a subscription, a piece of shit like this is pure rental weekend material, might as well try it out without spending any extra money on it.
This industry needs to crash and the people who poisoned it need be rendered destitute for bringing their cultural Marxist identity politics into the realm of bing bing wahoo shooty bang bang.
Already happened, Xbox more or less retired from the console wars. Wait until Halo finally makes it on Playstation or The Switch.

I'd much rather the devs of the inevitable multiplat Halo remake/reboot be put on the streets and have to beg like paupers before it can even come out. I can't think of a less valuable class of human than the video game dev at this point, except maybe the video game company CEO or the video game marketer.

Not close enough, I won't accept it until the companies and journoscum admit defeat. Right now they're pretending that this wasn't a loss for them and are pumping out fake reviews and numbers to cope. I will not accept their collapse until it is so crystal clear that not even the biggest pink haired danger glasses wearing retard can deny it while she/they is being shoved into a dumpster.
