Law Backpage has been seized

We have just lost cabin pressure.

Backpage was seized because the Communications Decency Act was amended to allow LEO to pierce the veil and come after hosts and services when users had broken the law. This may seem trivial, but the CDA's safe harbor provisions is what enables every site that exists and allows user-generated content to be self-published.

4chan? At risk. 8chan? At risk.
Encyclopedia Dramatica? At risk. Kiwi Farms? At risk. Every other web forum? At risk.
Facebook, Google Plus, YouTube, Twitter, Gab? At risk.

If the CDA continues down this path we will see our largest export (culture and technology) be swiftly transplanted to other countries with safe harbor provisions.

Now, I don't know the full story, and I get where you are coming from, but if Children where being actively exploited on the site and the admins did nothing in their power to stop it I can't really be upset about this.
I don't give a shit mate. This is the first step towards walking off a cliff. The fucking feds themselves own several Tor child pornography sites; "protecting the children" is a bullshit fucking lie.

Can someone break this down Barney style for me?

I dunno why this is news and I'm scared.
Its basically the end result of a slippery slope argument. The one they say "That will NEVER happen, youre paranoid and stupid." And then it happens.

Put it this way, I took polisci 101 and the instructor described to the class as the bill of rights and democracy and shit, all operating on the idea that humanity will promote it's best. So now we see, if this is it's best, the people who are using and preying on it's worst must be much more nefarious and evil. Like, Im drunk, but, if it's best isnt that great, it's worst must be terrifyingly awful. Like if you aim for the best and end up with the worst, what happens when you aim for the minimum bar, you know? Im literally retarded so my allegories dont make sense at the best of times. Much less when Im drinking vodka.

The administration has a really specific focus on human trafficking which I appreciate a lot, seems like the reason for the raid. I think that part is great. I know some sites might be at risk under obscenity laws, but I doubt KF is going to singled out. Stranger things have happened, but I don't see much reason for it to happen. The chan websites have problems with CP being posted, KF does not (to my knowledge). I am also wonder if KF would be considered a valuable resource for finding information on people who are pedophiles and pimps.

That is 100% what was happening. Pimps force girls to set up shop (on a corner or backpage or whatever) and take all the money the johns give the girls under threat of violence. Most are under aged. That's the normal way prostitution works in most of the country.

Site executives say they are protected by the Communications Decency Act which regulates pornographic material on the internet. Executives argue that the law states internet publishers cannot be held liable for content created by third parties.

But investigators say the site lost that protection when they alerted posters to key terms related to child sex trafficking. Investigators found proof of these alerts in internal Backpage.com documents.

The site even gave the third party posters a chance to rephrase their ads so they wouldn't be flagged for child sex trafficking. Some of the terms Backpage.com admins told posters not to use include "Lolita," young, teenager and even "Amber Alert."

The site's CEO, Carl Ferrer was arrested in late 2016 on pimping charges.
Unless people here have been using Kiwi Farms for human trafficking and prostitution and the mods were in on it, I'm going to say we are pretty safe here.

Well, thisll be interesting in the longrun. I mean, technically speaking. What would constitute a seizure of kiwifarms in the first place? From what I can tell, nobody is doing anything illegal as staff seem to be mostly on top of it when it gets to it.

Question: With this new door opening, does this mean even stricter vetting/monitoring of the forums then before and/or a "audit" of sorts into all threads that may or may not contain things that could potentially lead to CDA investigations? Is there anything us Users can do to help prevent any of this occuring as well Null?

One issue arising is that for at least the last decade the US has included provisions in trade agreements which effectively bind other countries to US law regarding online content. It's a nasty, backdoor way of bypassing the legislature of other countries (including my own) and their strong privacy provisions.

Tbf, the people involved in the backpage scandal did not show up to court several times and outright ignored the government. This has been a long time coming for them, especially after the release of "I am Jane Doe" which received quite a bit of attention lately. BP was basically on their shit list.

It's also worthy of mention that on several occasions BP was given chances to mend their rules before this ever happened.
