I briefly dated a woman who said "oh, I always get carded" and I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from saying "why?".
Looking young isn't always a good thing. There are few things as downright infuriating as your authority not being respected because you're young. It's been PLed elsewhere over the years, but I've spent almost the entirety of my 20s working as a hotel night auditor. In a nutshell, when I'm on the clock, I'm the only staff on the property and in charge of absolutely everything. A lot of people simply will not listen to a 24yo telling them to quiet down or, worse yet, kicking them out.

There's a level of respect that comes with looking older that can be downright infuriating not to have.

Yeah. I'm an engineer, but also very short, and young-looking, and getting people to take you seriously can be a real struggle. People can go from listening fully to my input over email, then once we actually meet at a conference or something that just evaporates.

At 30 if you’re not baking pale skin in the sun you still look young as long as you’re not a drug addled mess
Not sure about this. Based on my team's research it's clear that that some humans have a genetic predisposition to tolerate large amounts of drugs without externally displaying the cell damage caused by said drugs. We'll need to secure a lot more funding to explain this in detail, though.

You should try showing more skin. People like a woman in the workplace who's not too uptight.

Frankly, anytime I look at old TV series from the 70's and forward I think people look fine until I find out how old they actually were when it was recorded.
People in their 30s looked like 50, men were bald by the age of 20.

I remember seeing my uncle's yearbook and thinking "These are teenagers?". I think a lot of the 70s facial hair styles didn't help. Plus those old fashioned shirt collars, fabric patterns an cuts look old because we associate them with styles from 50 years ago. My mom hated the clothing styles in the 70s and told me she had to shop around a lot to find stuff she liked.

Looking back at the grunge style explosion from the early 90s, it just looks like everyone got their clothes out of the donation bin. Little do the kiddies know that you paid big bux at Macy's for those super baggy pants and artificially distressed flannel shirts.

Oh no, they do, because they do the same thing now. Aelfric Eden actually got more popular in the past year despite starting the grift a decade ago. The clothes are even lower quality than they were then.

So, no I don't think people age worse now, it's mostly a matter of style now and then.
Less is almost always going to be more in terms of makeup and flamboyant clothes will also age you unless you find a style that really works for you.
Simple makeup, simple hair and a classical sense of dress with well tailored clothes will let you age gracefully.
It's the nicotine from all the indoor smoking that was allowed back then, we'll see it again with the rise of kids vaping fruity air it fucks the body's collagen and elastin production, same reason as to why smoker's wounds tend to heal slower than a non-smokers.

My point was that people don't age worse at any given point in time, it's just that we always imagine it to be like that.

Before smoking got popular people still aged like crap if they had the genetics for it, look at wedding photos from the 1800s.

The main difference today is that a lot of the aging effect is artificial via surgery and fillers instead of makeup and unflattering style like it used to be the past 100 years.

Don't forget the microplastics that are in literally everything at this point, including our brains.

There's also something to be said about the effects of smoking, especially those old school cigarettes which were often unfiltered and really loaded with all kinds of crap.

This isn't after a skin treatment, this is twins where one is a smoker and one isn't.

Listen, I grew up in a smoking household, did all the drugs for many years, drank like a fish, and I still got my little pillow stuffie prize from the age guesser at the amusement park SO THERE.
