Balatro is cool because you can open the .exe in 7zip and plug in your own .oggs for easy quick vaporwavey-but-not-really remixes of whatever you put in. If you listen to the original .ogg files, the songs play at a way higher tempo than they do in-game. The default song (it's the same one remixed five times) is good but gets really repetitive after a while, so it's cool that it's not too hard to add in your own. Fuckin Tetris on NES and OutRun in 1986 understood that games like these benefit from having more than one song to choose from depending on the vibe of the salty runback.

Finally won my first game while using the Green Deck (easy mode, let's be real), the Hologram joker is ridiculously overpowered if you are lucky enough to get consistent playing cards in the shop

You can get better hand chances if you modify the deck, and the best hand in this game is not the royal flush. It is the flush five, which you get by converting as many cards as you can into a single card, hopefully an ace. Generally it is far better to enhance small hands, as statistically you will win more often, and it isn't hard to make broken decks.

It’s fucking video poker. People were playing LCD handheld versions of this decades ago. I enjoy poker, but GOTY and people going this nuts over it? Okay I guess.

Insane reduction. All great games are improvements upon good games. Tetris was tetrinominoes with a lose state.
Baldurs gate 3 was just D&D with graphics. Dwarf fortress is just rogue or nethack but with colony building.

ok so what happened is the guy who made this didnt expect it to do this well. once the demo was posted during next fest, some larger youtubers began covering it and it quickly became of interest to a many people. it does help that it's gameplay loop is rather addictive of making the numbers go up and the flaming numbers and it go woosh and the numbers go into scientific notation and the monkey brain in us goes "OOUAH OOUAH!!! WOOWOOWOO!!!" when it happens because dopamine is a hell of a brain chemical

You don't need meta builds, just need the game to STOP FUCKING WITHHOLDING THE FUCKING TAROT CARDS WHEN I NEED TO THIN THE DECK. 90% of my runs lately ended because I got a bunch of jokers that acted full on retarded, but required very specific cards I could not find in my deck because I kept discarding and drawing junk cards that needed to be removed.

Even when I get the voucher for extra tarot cards, I still never see hanged man or death, the game is a bully.

Purple stake has felt like a power spike but I'm committed to getting to my first gold stake win with yellow deck. I'm excited to unlock erratic deck so I can cheese [Have at least 30 cards with club suit] and [play a hand that contains four seven of clubs].

I have it on my phone and it's a perfect game for when I have to waste some time. One thing I've noticed is that on higher stakes, especially Purple stake and beyond, it's very important early on to get a joker that scales, something like Wee or Runner. My first gold stake win was with an Abandoned deck straight build where I lucked out and got Runner very early..

Don't waste your time going for gold stickers on all decks and jokers (ESPECIALLY the jokers). Gold stake pushes against the limits of the game, requiring insane amounts of foresight to progress and even then, the game might just fuck you over anyway. Some runs are impossible to get off the ground even if you find a strong joker in the first shop, which means you spend more time restarting than playing the game. The joker stickers are particularly frustrating because you need to use your joker slots to bring useless jokers to the end, meaning everything else needs to be that much stronger. That is, if you can even find the damn things in the first place. I completed ten runs with 1199/1200 looking for stone joker that just never showed up (yes I had a stone card).

Take it from me, grinding this game is not worth it. The challenges and low stakes are worth playing though.
