$206.5m over 6 years for a 32 year old? The Greinke deal is going to look bad in a hurry, and I'm surprised that Arizona would hamstring themselves financially like that. It only gets uglier if he's hurt for any length of time. At least with David Price the Red Sox are working with a massive budget and he's younger so they're likely to get more ace-quality seasons out of him.

I'm perplexed.

Because they did well with schilling and Johnson when they were "older"

They just got a $1.5 billion TV deal

The Pirates finally cut underperforming Pedro Alvarez by not offering him a contract. Nice guy, and getting a ball into the Allegheny River on-the-fly, not bouncing it off the sidewalk, is pretty impressive. But, no one should be surprised. We already have a .280 hitting infielder with some power at 2B in Neil Walker, except he's not a defensive liability who can't even play first where everyone's throwing to you.

I'm happy with that outcome.

The Pirates of yore would've cut Walker and given Alvarez a 10-year deal because he was the NL MVP (three years ago) and that stardom and cache' would "put butts in seats", and within a year, they'd be shopping him as a potential DH to AL teams with 2 pitching prospects, desperate to get rid of yet another bad contract.

Looks like Arizona decided to go all-in for the next couple of years and completely mortgage the future. That trade for Shelby Miller is atrocious, even if it does make their rotation look pretty solid for next season. He's just not a player worth gutting the farm and trading a quality outfielder for.

They didn't do fantastic but I was genuinely happy with how well the Mets did this year, all things considered.

Well, enjoy Neil Walker, just heard he was traded for Jon Niese.

Sad to see him go, Pittsburgh native, wore Andy Van Slyke's old number, nice guy, but, like that hard-luck sale of your old Camaro because you can't afford to keep it with a baby on the way..... at least he went to a nice home.

Jason Heyward took less money to sign with the Cubs over the Cardinals and Cardinals twitter is going full retard calling him a "nigger" "faggot" and a whole lot of other things.

Here is a Cardinals fan defending them (and a tweet he made in October)

Right...... because we all know Mariano Rivera never did jack shit to win anyone a WS ring, cuz' he ain't white.

New rules announced today for this upcoming MLB season:

- Managers and coaches will be limited to 30 second timed visits to the mound

- Baserunners going to 2nd must start their slide before reaching the bag, and cannot change their path to deliberately slide into the fielder.

There have already been some delicious chimpouts on sports radio from baseball purists about how this will ruin the game and turn it into a pansy sport.... I was so hoping my one coworker who's a purist AND a Phillies fan would've reacted to it, since Chase Utley pretty much made that change happen by hunting shins with his cleats last postseason.

Cubs opening day lineup:

1. Dexter Fowler, CF

2. Jason Heyward, RF

3. Ben Zobrist, 2B

4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B

5. Kris Bryant, 3B

6. Kyle Schwarber, LF

7. Jorge Soler, DH

8. Miguel Montero, C

9. Addison Russell, SS

Their no. six hitter hit 16 home runs in 69 games... which would average out to 38 over 162. Shit, Soler is capable of knocking 30+ and is their backup outfielder. There isn't a single easy out in this lineup.

That sets an opening day record for most lopsided shutout. Then again, the Padres did once get no-hit by a pitcher who was trippin on LSD.

Francisco Liriano striking out 10 guys a game certainly isn't sustainable, but, it was fun to watch. Even more fun against the Cards. And, we can say,( for one brief inning), he held the season lead for RBIs! What CAN'T he do? :)

FWIW: Anthony Rizzo sounds like he missed his calling, now, THERE is a name that was BORN to be on a Federal RICO indictment....

Went to go see the a Cubs game last week. There was a two hour rain delay and some drunk guy fell out of the stands onto the field. I'm pretty sure he died. I sat in the left field bleachers and heckled Jeff Francoeur, who did a Sammy Sosa impression in response.

Bump.

Today in things I never thought I would say, it is almost October and the Cubs have the best record in baseball by a decent margin.

He was only 24. I was watching the team the staff giving interviews and the one guy couldn't even talk. Jesus. (I seriously hope the media leaves his family alone -- but that's probably not going to happen)

Fernandez was not only NL Rookie of the Year in 2013, but 3rd in the Cy Young Award chase that year. Two time All-Star in 2013 and '16. Who knows what kind of accolades he could've accomplished? From his performance, he seemed on track for greatness. His stats speak for themselves. Even after Tommy John surgery, he never seemed to lose a step.

I can only hope the Marlins retire his 16, because he was such a huge contributor to the team in his short time. The Marlins, his family, and the fans have my sincerest sympathies.

Godspeed, Jose.
